Title: The Ultimate Cougar
Review: Mellencamp Greatest Hits Compilation. I know he hates to be called Johnny Cougar but that's what you get when you turn into some kind of an angry curmudgeon that tries to control audience behavior from the stage or threaten to leave which is just totally unacceptable after all the support he's been given over the years. Bought this one that came with the Bonus DVD with 5 music videos. The sound is incredible on these CD's. The DVD is just okay but a waste of disc space, if you ask me. Heck, he could've filled up two DVD's with over 40 music videos he had up to this point in his career. Maybe he's saving that for when he's damaged his voice with tar and nicotine to the point where he can't tour anymore. Ask Bob Seger about that. He'll be coming around again next Spring, but we won't be there - even if he has Lisa Germano on board. And that's a shame.

Title: "Words and Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits" is sheer rock and roll entertainment from start to finish.
Review: I usually like to have some kind of music playing in the background while I’m working. Right now, as I’m writing this review, I'm playing “Words and Music: John Mellencamp’s Greatest Hits.” Released in 2004 on the Island label, this outstanding album contains 37 of John Mellencamp’s best known and most popular songs, including every one of his 22 “top 40” hits recorded from 1978 through 2003.”Words and Music” certainly ranks as one of my favorite and most frequently played albums. Each of the two CDs runs well over 60 minutes in length. The songs don’t appear to be arranged in any particular order. All are digitally remastered, and many of the songs are longer album versions.Disc 1 runs to over 70 minutes, and starts right off with a pair of Mellencamp’s best-known and most popular songs: “Walk Tall” and “Pink Houses.” The 19 tracks on this disc also include the iconic “heartland” rocker’s songs, “Lonely Ol’ Night,” “Rain on the Scarecrow,” and “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A (A Salute to 60s Rock).”Disc 2 also runs to over 70 minutes. It picks right up where Disc 1 ends; and nearly equals the initial disc in strength. Here can be heard Mellencamp’s classic “I Need a Lover,” “Hurts So Good, “ “Jack and Diane,” and 15 other rock masterworks. As strong as the line-up of songs on “Words and Music” is, this album is also technically brilliant. The entire album has been digitally remastered, and the results are positively stunning. The audio is crisp and clear; all frequencies - the highs of John Mellencamp, Larry Crane and Mike Wanchic’s fierce guitars, the deep pulsating "thrum" of John Gunnell and Toby Myers’s bass, and the relentless tattoo of Kenny Aronoff’s drums - can be heard clearly and distinctly. The reproduction of Mellencamp’s vocals is especially noteworthy.John Mellencamp’s “Words and Music” is a prime example of what was once called “heartland rock,” and now more commonly known as “classic rock.” It is sheer rock and roll entertainment from start to finish. I think it's probably the best collection of John Mellencamp’s greatest songs, masterfully performed and brilliantly engineered. A must-own for any Mellencamp and classic rock fan.

Title: Awesome John Cougar [sometimes with] Mellencamp [sometimes alone] CD set.
Review: Though John Cougar has changed his name more often than Mick Jagger changes shirts during a concert, his music remains endearing--especially his early music IMO. Though I am not much of a fan of anything after, and including, Paper and Fire, I do like what came before. John Cougar's early music reflected an authentic fondness for the American heartland and its residents. His romanticized struggles of relationships, decisions, and changing times were juxtaposed perfectly with passing through the thin corridor separating coming of age and adulthood. Guess money makes one seek brighter lights in coastal towns and cities.Anyway, this 2-CD set contains all of his music. So whether you like the old, the new, or both, you will be completely pleased. You will also likely be surprised when you remember just how much you love JCM's music and how many words you know.Fill in the blanks:I was born in a small townProbably ___ ___ ___ in a small town...orYeah, life goes onLong after the _____ ___ ____ is gone...orOutside the club the Cherry BombOur hearts ____ ______ _______, say yeah yeah yea,Say yeah yeah yeah...See, bet you haven't though of those in years! And you can hear it all here in one place!

Review: I bought this collection to add to an earlier Mellencamp CD I've had for a while. In my opinion, it's a pretty full roundup of his best-known hits. What I wasn't expecting was how much better it sounded than the earlier disc. Although technical details in the notes are a little vague, I believe this collection was re-mastered in 2004 when it was released, the the improvement over the older CD I had is clearly audible. I'm hearing deeper and more-defined bottom end, more detail in the mids and highs, as well as a wider and more spacious soundstage overall. For established fans, or for newbies wanting a nice tidy collection of the favourites, I would highly recommend.

THE END
