Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams. They think they've found it when they visit the remote manor that once belonged to Dr. Adrienne Hale, a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace years ago. But when a violent winter storm traps them at the estate, the house begins to lose its appeal.
Stuck inside and growing restless, Tricia stumbles on a collection of audio transcripts from Dr. Hale's sessions with patients. As Tricia listens to the cassette tapes, she learns about the terrifying chain of events leading up to the doctor's mysterious disappearance.
With each tape, another shocking piece of the puzzle falls into place, and a web of lies slowly unravels. But by the time Tricia reaches the final cassette, the one that reveals the entire horrifying story, it will be too late…

Title: Another Satisfying McFadden Novel
Review: This is my first Freida McFadden book outside of the Housemaid books. I enjoyed it as much as the Housemaid ones. I like McFadden's books because they're super easy to read and hold my interest. I've also learned that you have to go into McFadden's books not expecting Pulitzer Prize material. The writing is pretty simplistic, so the reader doesn't get bogged down with long, descriptive sentences that ultimately go nowhere. However, the plot behind the writing is intriguing. Also, since each book I've read by McFadden (so far) has been from the first person perspective, the writing could simply be how that character would write. Additionally, as each chapter ends, McFadden does an excellent job of ending on a mini cliffhanger so you want to jump to the next chapter and find out what happens. As with the Housemaid books, Never Lie flips perspectives from chapter to chapter. Some chapters are written by the character Dr. Adrienne Hale's perspective in the past, while others are written from the character Tricia's point of view in the present. Dr. Hale is a psychiatrist who has gone missing/murdered. She left behind a gorgeous, large house in the middle of nowhere. Tricia's husband Ethan brings Tricia to look at purchasing Dr. Hale's house in the middle of a bad snowstorm and they end up getting stranded there for the weekend. Although some twists were predictable in this mystery novel, others were not. And that's okay. McFadden gives you little clues along the way, but she also wants to offer some surprises. When I'm not in the mood for anything too cerebral, McFadden has become my new go-to author.

Title: Good twist
Review: I thought for sure I had it all figured out but then the big twist I definitely didnât see happen. I would have given it 5 stars but I was a little disappointed at the twist and who it was. It was a good book. Definitely suspense filled and kept me turning the page.

Title: A house "haunted" by a missing psychiatrist
Review: If youâve read even one of Freida McFaddenâs psychological thrillers, youâre probably a fan like me. Dr. McFadden is a practicing physician who specializes in brain injury. Consequently, she knows a lot about the functioning, as well as the malfunctioning, of the human mind. And that serves her well when she sits down to write a psychological thriller. In âNever Lieâ (2022, 292 pages in softcover), the authorâs knowledge brings a number of characters with damaged minds to life, including Dr. Adrienne Hale (a renowned psychiatrist), EJ a dangerous narcissist, and PL a pleasant young woman who credits Dr. Hale with effecting a âcure.â But, for some unknown reason, Dr. Hale has gone missing shortly after the publication of her long-awaited magnum opus, âThe Anatomy of Fear.â In a seemingly unrelated plot, newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are on their way to look at a house thatâs away from the city, fairly isolated, and a great place to raise the children that they hope to have someday. The house is huge, magnificent, and underpriced. Ethan is immediately in love with the house, but Tricia is getting bad vibes. They arrive at the location in the middle of a blizzard, and they are snowed in. There are no land lines in the house, and their phones are not picking up a signal. But Ethan finds fresh food in the house and some very good wine in the cellar. However, the house has been unoccupied for years, and there are thick layers of dust covering everything. The presence of edible food is a mystery thatâs never completely explained.Nevertheless, Ethan and Tricia (she, reluctantly) decide to hunker down for the weekend, hoping that their realtor will realize that they need help. But Triciaâs case of the heebie-jeebies simply will not be abated. Sheâs spooked by the giant painting of Dr. Hale above the fireplace and a series of strange noises that only she seems to be able to hear. Of course, Tricia doesnât believe in ghosts, yet she canât help wondering if Dr. Hale is haunting the house, sending subtle signals not to buy it. The house is filled with books, some academic but most popular novels. So, once the decision to stay is finalized, Tricia starts searching for something to read that will help to occupy the time that she and Ethan are stranded. When she attempts to remove a copy of Stephen Kingâs âThe Shining,â she hears a click that seems to unlock a hidden door. The door opens to a secret room that holds a trove of tapes â the ones that Dr. Hale made during the sessions with her clients. Although she knows that Ethan doesnât want her to snoop around, she grabs a batch of cassettes and takes them to Dr. Haleâs office, where there is a tape recorder. After listening to one tape, Tricia is hooked. The tapes provide many of the clues that the reader needs to solve the mystery, or so it seems. But Freida McFaddenâs novels are seldom predictable....Jim Glynn
