The Kleynhuis Strainer Pouch Idea

I’ve been a long-time fan of making my own yogurt, but never liked any of the methods I found out there to strain it. Cheesecloth was too messy and/or wasteful. I tried coffee filters, but didn't like that I'd need to use several at a time. Other ways were plastic, expensive, or awkward to store.

So, I had an idea to make my own yogurt strainer. I designed and sewed the pattern for the original prototype; I made more Greek yogurt and tweaked the design; and then I spent a year figuring out how to make it available to others.

The result: The Kleynhuis Greek Yogurt Strainer Pouch. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Title: Perfect product!
Review: If you are making a gallon of Greek yogurt at a time, this is the bag you want. I waited weeks to purchase it, making do with either an inconveniently shaped nut milk bag or some cheesecloth. I strained my first gallon batch of yogurt since purchasing this last night, and it was so much more convenient. Perfect shape to line the random colander I already had on hand, which I place in an old stainless Tramontina mixing bowl for draining. As previous reviews mentioned, the whole gallon of yogurt fit in the bag, but I had to drain for about 5 minutes before I could cinch it closed. Once I cinched it closed, I let it sit for a while longer, then switched to hanging it to drain. This was easier to maneuver, strained faster, and the cleanup was easier than the nut milk bag or cheesecloth I've been using. I will not go back -- this is the perfect product for straining a gallon of Greek yogurt. The Euro Cuisine strainers aren't appealing to me since they only hold a half gallon at a time, and so I'm happy with this cheaper, well-constructed, effective solution.I was not compensated for purchasing or reviewing this product -- I saw it mentioned by a blogger (also not compensated for using the product) who recommended it highly, and I'm here to confirm it's a great purchase.UPDATE 9/30/19: I just bought my second of these after giving mine to my mother, who now makes her own yogurt, too. The first one was still going strong, with just a small bit of wear to one small section of one row of the double row of stitching, after weekly use since the spring. I haven't compared the new one side by side, but I think the stitching is better on this one, and I've already used it a few times. Can't say enough about this little tool!

Title: One of the most effective solutions for making greek yogurt at home
Review: For years we only made regular—rather than greek—yogurt at home because the process was pleasant. The added step of draining the whey from the yogurt with cheesecloth was messy and UN-pleasant.Kleynhuis’ yogurt strainer takes the mess and kludgy-ness out of making greek yogurt. The pouch fits perfectly over a gallon-size stainless colander, works as effectively as cheesecloth, but is more durable and more easy to clean. The only reason I can imagine for why a pouch like this is a new innovation rather than something which has been around for ages would be due to all the odd advice offered on the Internet for how to make yogurt via any number of overcomplicated methods. We personally favor simplifying processes down to their essential components and steps. This pouch engenders additional simplification in making greek yogurt at home.Recommended.

Title: Multi Use Product
Review: I love this yogurt straining bag. I just started making my own Greek Yogurt two months ago. I purchased another item to strain the whey from the yogurt to make it the thick greek yogurt I was craving. While that product works fine, this one has easier clean up and makes the process much more inviting. I enjoyed this so much, I convinced my sister to start saving money by making her own yogurt at home and purchasing one of these Kleynhuis Greek Yogurt Strainer Pouches. The fine mesh helps to remove whey easily and quickly. I just put this inside my large colander which is sitting inside a bowl to catch the whey. After just a few hours in the refrigerator my yogurt is thick and delicious. I then place the yogurt in containers for our family to enjoy. If for some reason I strain the yogurt for too long and it is too thick, I just stir a bit of the whey back into the yogurt. I keep the whey for using in baking (use in place of water in recipes). The whey contains a ton of protein and we all need more protein. The bag easily cleans by running under the faucet and adding just a bit of dish soap. Rinse well and it air dries in no time.I have used this pouch to drain cucumbers when making tzatziki, straining the water out of zucchini when making zucchini fritters and it makes quick work of draining the water from potatoes for potato pancakes. So much easier then then the typical tea towel that is a mess to clean up while this is quite easy to clean.Even if you do not make yogurt this is a versatile kitchen item that will find a lot of uses throughout the year.

Title: So helpful and easy to use
Review: This bag is so very useful - I have used it to make Greek yogurt, chèvre, and ricotta. I just line my colander with it, spoon in the yogurt or cheese curds and then hang. It is easy to clean and dries very quickly. I have three. I highly recommend!! And, I will buy more if I need them. I would give as gifts if I knew someone else who was making yogurt or cheese at home. 🙂

Title: Strains yogurt well
Review: Overall I am very satisfied w/ this product, it does strain yogurt very well. I was a little disappointed in that you can't put a whole gallon in the bag AND hang it to strain. The bag does fit a whole gallon in it, but only if you use a bowl to support the edges, finding a bowl deep enough so that you can strain w/o it sitting in the liquid isn't very easy. (I suspect a gallon sized colander would help but I don't have one yet) If I could change one thing about this product it would be that it would hold a gallon and be able the use the draw string to close the bag. It is messy getting the yogurt out after it is strained but I suspect all bags are. It is extremely easy to clean and dries quickly.

Title:
Review: I use this for straining Greek yogurt. It does a good job and is easy to clean and dry. So much better than using cheese cloth. Seems a bit pricey for a fairly simple product, but it works well so I'm okay with that. The whey is clear with no yogurt getting through the mesh. I'm using an Instant Pot, making about 4 litres per batch.

Review: Highly recommend this strainer pouch. It comes with it's own little zip storage pocket so you can keep it clean between uses. I like this nylon type because it dries quick, less chance of mould forming in the material especially with all the different changes in weather.Having this strainer makes yogurt making so much easier. It fits around my large colander and pulls tight around the top to secure it in place while it does it's thing overnight. It fits around any bowl or colander up to 27cm in diameter and I use 2 litres of milk to make mine which it holds no problem at all. After its all strained, the yogurt is super creamy and has no grittyness to it at all (which I previously had before getting this pouch).Clean up is super easy too, just wash, rinse, air dry then pop it back in its own zip lock bag. Also don't forget to buy a fragrance free dishwashing liquid to wash the strainer pouch in (if you haven't already got some). You'll need it so your yogurt doesn't take on any smell from the strainer.

Review: I absolutely recommend this product to anyone making their own greek yogurt at home. It is a gamechanger when it comes to the straining part of the process. I know that when I empty the nylon pouch in the morning after it has drained all night I will have beautiful thick creamy yogurt without fail. The pouch washes up like a dream and dries in no time by hanging it up by the sewed in hook to air dry. Great product!!!!!!JoanNanton, Alberta, Canada
