A comprehensive critical companion to the blockbuster TV show LOST, revisiting its core themes, lore, and impact on culture
For fans of one of the most successful and highly discussed shows in recent memory, LOST: Back to the Island is both a delightful time capsule and a rousing work of entertainment criticism.
Before it premiered in the fall of 2004, LOST looked doomed to be an expensive, disastrous plane crash of a TV show. Instead, LOST was a massive hit, debuting with the biggest audience for a new drama on ABC in over a decade, reaching heights of over 23 million viewers at its peak, and holding on to a hefty fan-base for its entire six-season run.
The elements that made the series seem like a boondoggle proved, instead, to be a big part of its appeal. Audiences loved the exotic island setting, became invested in the morally compromised characters, and feverishly tried to unravel the show’s many mysteries.
In LOST: Back to the Island, TV critics and veteran LOST recappers Emily St. James and Noel Murray revisit what made the show such a success and an object of enduring cultural obsession, twenty years later.
Through essays, episode summaries, and cultural analysis, they take us back to the island and examine LOST’s lasting impact—and its complicated, sometimes controversial legacy—with a clear-eyed and lively investigation.

Title: Charlie the drummer of Driveshaft.
Review: Edit: Iâm updating my review from 1/5 a 4/5 because I am still really enjoying this book despite the (albeit) small mistakes. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the show, it covers way more than it misses. The entire intro revolves around how the authors are huge fans of the show, they almost immediately mention doing a rewatch for the anniversary (and more importantly this book) and then proceed to get super BASIC info WRONG 6 pages in like referring to Charlie as the drummer despite having several episodes revolving around his GUITAR.A small detail, but canât help but think these guys are only trying to capitalize on the Lost anniversary and cranked this out as quickly as possible. Shame.

Title: Great untilâ¦
Review: Really enjoyed the book, but as someone who has watched the entire series 4 times, it probably would be difficult not to like. The only gripe I have with it is how they âyada yadaâdâ the final episode, completely straying from the way they covered every single episode before that. No brief summary. No points about anything that happened. No behind the scenes. Just a couple of very long opinions of what each of the two authors thought of the episode, not evening specifying any scene with any sort of detail. Book really ended with a thud.

Title: Summary, not analysis
Review: The book's subtitle is that it is a "critical companion" to the TV show. However, it is nothing more than a collection of episode summaries - with little to no analysis. Example (paraphrased): "This episode reveals that Walt has powers, but the show never explains them." This is what passes for "deep dive analysis" (quoted on the back cover) in this book. I even skipped ahead to see if things got deeper as the seasons moved on, but no dice. Die hard fans will find little of interest here.

Title: Go back to the island!
Review: Though I wouldn't consider this a must read for LOST fans, it was fun to return to the island with the authors of LOST: Back to the Island. The short synopses and commentaries of each episode were entertaining. I'd forgotten a lot of little things and some big ones! I was one of those LOST fans who would try to figure everything out. You really couldn't/can't be a casual fan of LOST. If you were, you probably quit watching somewhere in season three or four. And how about the controversial final season? The commentaries on season six "explained" this trippy season as well as anyone who "gets it" could. I was one of the fans who was disappointed in season six. We're the ones who tell people that they HAVE to watch LOST and then give them a disclaimer that the end was a let down. I wanted things wrapped up with a nice bow where the LOST writers explained everything., and they didn't. So many questions went unanswered. However, this book helped me to remember that the LOST writers really didn't know where they were going to take the story during the first couple of seasons. The LOST we get in the end looks so much different than the LOST we got in the pilot, but as a die hard fan, I didn't mind. The big takeaway that I got from LOST: Back to the Island is that it truly was an awesome show with fans who were willing to accept what was happening and go with the flow. I think LOST fans will enjoy the trip down memory lane and will want to immediately break out the DVDs and binge watch LOST once again.I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
