Rather than a traditional presidential history, We The Presidents focuses on a century of presidencies from Warren G. Harding to Donald J. Trump and how their presidencies have shaped today’s America, and the world.

Many of today’s critical issues including immigration, inflation, income disparity, civil discord, and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East all had their roots in earlier presidencies. Ronald Gruner’s engaging and straightforward writing describes how presidencies over the last century have shaped today’s America from the Emergency Immigration Act of 1921 to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020.

The award-winning We The Presidents is more than an absorbing read; it is a great education on the issues which have shaped the American century up to the present day when democracy, both in America and around the world, faces yet another crucial test of its resilience and strength.

Title: Not your average Bio!
Review: I enjoyed the walk through policy and historical facts. Many look through personal lives while this one takes the unique approach of policy. Ive recommended this book anywhere people will listen to me, and some who wont listen to me but i still recommend it.

Title: Easy to read for the casual reader; well researched for the serious historian/economist!
Review: I’ve never been interested in history. In fact, history was one of my least favorite subjects while I was in school. However, since I’m much older, I’ve been feeling very ignorant. We The Presidents has great reviews and has won at least one award so I thought I would give it a try.I like that each of the 10 presidents covered has their own chapter. I think it makes for easier reading. I started with the chapter on my favorite president. I then went back to the beginning of the book. Each chapter leads nicely into the following chapter. Yes, there are lots of charts and graphs and numbers that a “serious” historian or economist will enjoy, however, I was able to see the “big picture” without delving too deep into the charts. I was surprised of the contributions of Carter and Clinton. I only remembered the Iran and Monica scandals but their terms were more than that. I was pleasantly surprised that such a scholarly and well researched and documented book also had bits of social and entertainment trivia! I now have a much better understanding of our country and how we got to where we are now. Very enlightening!

Title: From the citizen's viewpoint
Review: Gruner writes a non-partisan review of our presidents starting with Harding, with particular attention to the fate of the economy and thus of the average man during their terms. His writing and his view graphs are very clear. It's good to look at the eras without bias, but he also points out who was lucky and who not. It's also obvious that presidential temperament affects the country, the most useful personality traits being confidence and good cheer. I strongly recommend this book.

Title: An informational and thoroughly enjoyable read!
Review: .As a Brit making my life in the US for the last 40 years, I witnessed the changing Presidents covered here initially from the UK, and then as a resident. Reading this book brought back so many memories and filled in many of the, now increasing, blanks in my recollection. I particularly liked how Ron managed the difficult task of avoiding editorializing, and where I did detect perhaps a little bias in the phrasing, it was truly minimal. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and believe it will be found to be both fair and objective whatever political leanings the reader may have. Buy it - you won’t be disappointed!

Title: What Really Happened
Review: An excellent 100 year history of U.S. Presidents, presented in a balanced and familiar style that flows nicely. One of the book's outstanding features is that the author delves into the backgrounds and motivations of these leaders and how that subsequently affected their decisions. For example given Eisenhower's previous career he was determined to avoid another conflict if at all possible, even at the risk losing support among some U.S. voters, and how Ford's overall optimism and good nature made him open to compromise with both sides of the aisle. And while other similar books may contain more detail, this one is a great review of history as the author does not selectively leave out relevant facts. It is presented in an objective manner and it is left up to the reader to process. Facts and events that are not generally known are also well described such as Harding's excellent legislative start, Carter's impressive deregulation effort (which lead to all sorts of free market improvements) and Ford's warm relationship with Brezhnev. As the author has a background as a very successful entrepreneur there is also a lot of great info about how the various policies of these leaders affected the economy, and many lessons for the future.Would very highly recommend this book--one of the best historical works I have experienced.
