In season four of Darren Star’s hit TV Land series Younger, the editors at Empirical Press are shocked and deeply moved when they read Marriage Vacation, an autobiographical novel by the publisher’s estranged wife, Pauline Turner Brooks. Knowing the book will cause a sensation, they decide they must publish it. Now you can read what the hype is about—including page 58 that had everyone buzzing (...and blushing).

Marriage Vacation is for anyone who has ever fantasized about what it would be like to run away from it all.

By all appearances, Kate Carmichael has the perfect life: two adorable daughters, a prewar townhouse on the Upper East Side, and a husband who runs one of the most successful publishing companies in New York.

But when Kate attends a wedding and reconnects with successful friends from graduate school, she suddenly sees her life in a different light: the career she didn’t pursue, the dreams she’s locked away, the empty veneer of her privilege.

When the wedding weekend ends, instead of heading home to her husband and family, Kate gets on a plane and flies halfway around the world. She claims it’s just going to be for a week—two max—just so she can clear her head and reconnect with her lost dreams. But the adventure doesn't go quite as planned.

This provocative and gripping novel asks: Is a wife and mother allowed to have a midlife crisis? And, if she does, can she ever be forgiven?

PRAISE FOR Marriage Vacation

“Marriage Vacation has everything you want an in a novel: fascinating characters, drama, secrets, emotional reckonings, and far-flung adventure. If you love Younger, you’ll love this book. If you’ve never watched an episode of Younger (you should change that), you’ll still love this book. And just wait until you read page 58!”
—Darren Star, creator of Sex and The City and Younger

“This brilliant romp helps us understand why Liza was so excited to discover the manuscript, how any woman could leave the dreamy Charles, and what exactly Pauline—by way of her fictional alter ego, Kate Carmichael—did on that mysterious Marriage Vacation. Pack this heartfelt, insightful, funny, sexy book when you take a vacation of your own.”
—Pamela Redmond Satran, author of Younger

Title: Great Tie-In to the TV Series Younger
Review: If you love the TV Land series Younger, this book is a MUST READ. It's a great tie-in to the characters and storyline. If you're not familiar, Younger is about a 40-something year old woman named Liza who pretends to be 20-something in order to get a job at a publishing house after her divorce. Based on a novel, the series was developed for television by Darren Star, also famous for Sex and the City and Melrose Place. Liza succeeds (for the most part), but has to play the part of a millennial in all aspects of her life, which proves to be difficult at times. By seasons 4 and 5, the company she works for ends up buying and publishing the book "Marriage Vacation." As it turns out, the "author" Pauline is the wife of the head of the company. The story is based on her real life, when she took a "vacation" from her marriage by running off to Thailand to "make a difference," to rediscover herself, and to write again. She does this with no planning, no notice, and barely an explanation, leaving behind her husband and two daughters. When I first started reading "Marriage Vacation," I took Pauline's side. I could see her point of view. She's lost herself. She got married, became a wife to a successful business man, became a mom to two kids...and just lost every part of herself as an individual. I could definitely feel for her and sympathize with those feelings. I think we've all felt lost at one point and wanted to get away from everything. On the other hand, there comes a point where you make your own choices and have to be responsible for the choices you've made. She chose to get married. She chose to have children. You can't just walk away from your responsibilities, not expect there to be consequences, and have everyone just waiting for you to return to your normal life after you've gone and had your fun.The novel was an easy, interesting read, though, and really gave me some more insight into the character of Pauline on the TV series. It also works well as a stand alone chick-lit story, even if you no nothing about the TV series. I also enjoyed some of the extras details in the book. There's an author bio and acknowledgements of the fictional character of Pauline. The book also says on the spine and inside that it's a "Millennial Imprint," which is from the TV series.

Title: Had its highlights.........
Review: There were some parts that were entertaining. It was a very quick read, something to take your mind off of your day. As a married mom for many more years than the main character in the book, I can certainly relate to a lot of what she is feeling. Not the best book you will ever read, but if you like Younger, then you will probably like it.

Title: Great weekend read, especially for Younger fans!
Review: As a big fan of Younger, I was excited to hear that this book was becoming a reality. I love the idea of having an opportunity to engage in the plot line of one of my favorite shows in an new, unconventional way. I hope this is the first in a long line of fictional novels from Younger coming to life!As other reviewers have said, it’s a light, fun, quick read and allows you to get to know Pauline/Kate’s character in a more intimate light...and also provides a few insights on Charles/Karl. If you're a fan of the show, but don't have time to read the novel - don't worry. You won't be missing out on anything too juicy (except for page 58, that is).Upon finishing, it left me wanting more, more, more! If this were a standalone book, I'd immediately start counting down the months until a sequel was released. But, lucky for us, we just need to wait until next Tuesday night for the narrative to play out further on television!

Title: Good quick read.
Review: I liked it. As my headline states, its a good quick read. We really get to know Charles'/Carl's backstory, what he was like when he was younger, pun intended, as well as what he became after the death of his father. I guess my only complaint was the explanation of why Pauline/Kate left and didn't come back for 18 months. Without giving anything away, she always has Mother Teresa like reasons for not coming home, over and over again. They pull out all the stops to make the reader understand her side and why she stayed away. It reminded me of the movie "Guess Whose Coming to Dinner". Poitier's character was so perfect that he felt a little contrived, as if the black man had to be flawless to be acceptable enough that Hepburn and Tracy could not find any possible reason to reject him. Remade, I would like to hope that movie would be made a bit different today.Anyhoo, I digress. If I was being honest, I guess my biggest problem with the book is that there would be nothing that would have kept me away from my son when he was her girls age. Plain and simple she abandoned them and there is nothing that, in my opinion can sway me to being okay with that. I do not care how unhappy she was. Her character has a voice and a brain. If Charles was ignoring her emotional needs, she could have spoken up or left him, left him in a place where she had access to her children. I just can't get past that.

Title: I love the TV show and can't get enough
Review: I bought this book right away when I heard about it since I am a Younger fan. I love the TV show and can't get enough. The writing is very well done and insightful. It is hard to write this character as sympathetic leaving her family to discover her own passions, but what I get out of it is my own sense of passion. I think this book will resonate with a lot of women since this is a problem a lot of women find themselves in as they give up their dreams being a housewife and supporting their husband and kids. You may be pampered, but is that what you really want? This is what Marriage Vacation tries to answer. Why can't women have it all? I love the tidbits from the show and as a stand-alone book I am a fan as well.

Title: Great Book!
Review: It took me a few pages to get into the story, but once I did, could not put it down! Really a fun, positive, happy, sad, book to read. Great first novel! Looking forward to more. Recommend it, with 2 thumbs way up.. Lots of "f" words, but that is my only hesitation. The "f" words are not trendy, and could have been left out...
