The dazzling debut cookbook from Joanne Lee Molinaro, the home cook and spellbinding storyteller behind the online sensation @thekoreanvegan

Joanne Lee Molinaro has captivated millions of fans with her powerfully moving personal tales of love, family, and food. In her debut cookbook, she shares a collection of her favorite Korean dishes, some traditional and some reimagined, as well as poignant narrative snapshots that have shaped her family history.

As Joanne reveals, she’s often asked, “How can you be vegan and Korean?” Korean cooking is, after all, synonymous with fish sauce and barbecue. And although grilled meat is indeed prevalent in some Korean food, the ingredients that filled out bapsangs on Joanne’s table growing up—doenjang (fermented soybean paste), gochujang (chili sauce), dashima (seaweed), and more—are fully plant-based, unbelievably flavorful, and totally Korean. Some of the recipes come straight from her childhood: Jjajangmyun, the rich Korean-Chinese black bean noodles she ate on birthdays, or the humble Gamja Guk, a potato-and-leek soup her father makes. Some pay homage: Chocolate Sweet Potato Cake is an ode to the two foods that saved her mother’s life after she fled North Korea.

The Korean Vegan Cookbook is a rich portrait of the immigrant experience with life lessons that are universal. It celebrates how deeply food and the ones we love shape our identity.

Title: Amazing & generous author
Review: As a long-term vegan, it's the cuisine of Southeast Asia and the Indian sub-continent (Vegan Richa) that made this journey 'palatable' for us. Oh how we love our homemade kimchi among other Korean specialties. The entire book is beautiful. The recipes are straightforward. We truly appreciated all of the specialty ingredient explanations in the first chapter of the book. The vegan 'fishy' sauce alone made this cookbook pay for itself. And yes, vegan 'fishy' sauce still has the funk of conventional fish sauce. No one who likes our kimchi noticed the difference, but we're glad to no longer rely on shrimp paste. We also agree with the author on kale vs. spinach. The beautiful kale salad is a taste bud sensation as are all of this well edited book's recipes.Lastly, we truly enjoyed the author's sharing of her childhood remembrances and all of the wonderful adults who brought her to truly embrace her cultural heritage through food. We thank you all.

Title: A Deeply Moving Book!
Review: I am a strange person who actually reads cookbooks. I don't just flip to a page and do a recipe (well, sometimes I do); instead, I actually read the book from cover to cover. Within the first couple of paragraphs I was completely immersed, and I did not want to put the book down. I found myself weeping and giggling and cringing at various moments of this deeply moving book. Indeed, I typically read cookbooks, but I am not typically changed by them. This book is beautiful, engaging, thought provoking, and more. Oh yeah, and there are some damn good recipes in there, too. Joanne, thanks for this amazing work of art and history!

Title: Great Recipes
Review: Well I anxiously waited for this cookbook. It was initially supposed to come out sooner. When it didn’t, I promptly emailed Joanne to see if I missed it or what. She was kind enough to email me back and let me know the projected release date and said her publisher wanted MORE recipes. (Not surprised. She’s amazing) I’ve been following Joanne for a while on IG, and I so appreciated her sharing her versions of these classic Korean recipes. I am a Korean American, and the one thing I sorely regret, is not learning how to cook from my mother. I learned on my own so I never really knew how to cook Korean food. It was quite intimidating. This cookbook does a good job of giving both the experienced cook and the novice cook good instruction. I’ve made quite a few of these recipes and they have all been amazing. Each time I say “this is not like my moms… definitely better.” LOL. I wanted to write my review now, after I had made quite a few of recipes. I also chose now because I had heard this cookbook got a one star review based on availability of ingredients. I must say, I lived in big cities all my life and now live in the country. I agree that yes, when you’re in a small town like mine, it could be more difficult to find these ingredients. But isn’t that for anything that isn’t classic “American” type ingredients? Did someone really buy a Korean cookbook and think they didn’t need some Korean ingredients? I mean… I live waaaayyy out in the country with one neighbor in sight and I can get ahold of the ingredients I need if I really want them. (Hello online orders). I don’t think it’s fair to rate someone’s hard work so poorly when the issue is a user error, rather than one of the product. If you’re unhappy with your own lack of will to complete the task you set for yourself, be disappointed in yourself more than anyone else. This cookbook is great and I truly feel blessed for it. I miss Korean food so much and there are I think 2 restaurants in my town and surprisingly enough, not Korean! LOL. Anyways, wonderful cookbook, and good recipes. She has a way of Koreanizing dishes and is very creative. If you have the fiery pasta, it reminds you a lot of tteokboki which is amazing for me because I can’t get rice cakes here! Love it! I felt that it was necessary to offset the negativity of that one star review because that’s simply not fair. This cookbook was clearly very well put together and beautifully done. Don’t hate. Appreciate. Thanks, Joanne for everything.

Title: I highly recommend this book
Review: Everything in this book is stunning: the author’s personal history peppered throughout, the artistically pleasing food photos, and the recipes. I am a cookbook-aholic and I can confidently say this one is a work of art.I’ve been plant based since 4/18, made my first Korean dish shortly after my transition, and have been in love with the flavors ever since. (I also watch a lot of KDramas and started learning the language but that’s another story.)If you’re interested in upping your Korean-food repertoire this is the book for you.

Title: My go to cookbook for Korean flavors
Review: Vegan or not, you will enjoy trying just about every recipe in this book. We did. And we keep coming back for more of our favorites and some stand by recipes that we make all of the time. Wonderful ways to use tofu in this book. Great Egg Roll and also Black Bean Burger recipes. Great ways to make and use Kimchi also. Don't overlook the fundamentals that she points out in the book. Found nearly all of the ingredients online if you don't live close to an asian market. The Braised Potatoes are to die for.

Title: Wonderful Cookbook
Review: I bought this cookbook because Joanne was a speaker at our Company webinar. She did a great cooking demo while speaking about her background & sharing wonderful stories. Then I followed her on Instagram & she posts a lot of mouth-watering recipes while providing more interesting & encouraging stories. So then I found her cookbook & bought it for a gift. My gift recipient loved it & made several recipes. I'm not a vegan, but I also have to say her recipes are very delicious! I had her black bean noodles, which is one of my favorite dishes. It was so good & very clean & satisfying. I hope to try more of the recipes. Just have to hound my friend....(**I'm not a cook...but maybe I can try**)

Review: I've been enjoying TKV's Instagram for a couple of years now. This is a book for those who enjoy cooking as much as they enjoy reading stories and learning about people and and their cultures. The recipes are, for the most part, easy to make and well explained. I have found a couple of errors or instructions that could be improved (e.g. on page 81, on steps 2 and 3 of the mung bean pancakes recipe the word "mung beans" is used when in step 2 we're referring to the "mung bean sprouts". It leads to confusion and I had to read this several times to understand what was happening. But it's really nothing you can't figure out by yourself!).I have only tried a few recipes from the book and I'm very happy with the results of each one, except for the kimchi. I couldn't make that one turn out as well as the one I'm used to making. But it is supposed to be the traditional way of doing it and I'm not Korean, so who the heck am I to complain? :DIt is very true that availability of some ingredients is a problem, even here in Canada, which I wasn't expecting. If you have a car, unlike me, you may easily find them in your nearest Korean market, though!Just get this book and start cooking! You won't regret it 🙂

Review: One of the best selling cookbooks, and it is easy to see why.I absolutely love Joanne Molinaro's calm, wise, generous style. I also love the personal content she puts in along with the ingredients. It comes through in all her YouTube clips (which add another dimension to this book, and are really worth watching), and it comes through in every one of her printed recipes here, whether traditional or fusion. This isn't just a wonderful cookbook for vegans, it suggests new ways of preparing food for vegetarians and carnivores alike. She offers a flexible, sensible cuisine that produces truly delicious, nutritious meals.Highly recommended to all foodies.

Review: I didn't give 5 stars mainly because of the American measurements that are a pain to convert sometimes. The book is amazing, lovely stories behind the food and recipes, but mostly the recipes are easy to follow and yummie!
