Review: The Prairie Girl Cupcake cookbook is the best! I checked it out from my local library so many times, that I finally had to have my own copy. The cupcake batter recipes are good and I've even converted them into 9x13 pan recipes. The real reason to get this book is for the frosting recipes. Many of them use freeze-dried fruit powder and they taste so good! Yum! As I write this, I'm thinking I need to make some cupcakes!

Title: And I love the tagline
Review: There's much to be said for the cover of a book. Does it make you look twice? Make you want to open it to see what's waiting inside you to discover? Make you hungry? For a cupcake? The Prairie Girl Cupcake Cookbook by Jean Blacklock does all of the above! And I love the tagline....Living Life One Cupcake at a Time.Prairie Girl Bakery is a sought out bakery, known for having the best cupcakes in Toronto. Prairie Girl is a scratch bakery - they use real eggs, real chocolate and real butter, milk and fresh ingredients - no premade mixes or shortening. And if you can't make it to TO to pick a sweet treat from Prairie Girl, here's the next best thing - their recipes have been compiled into a just released cookbook. The first few chapters explains those basic ingredients - and why they make a difference as well as tools.PGB uses five basic recipes for their fifteen everyday cupcakes. Same for the icing recipes. Honestly, I was kind of stunned when I realized how easy they were. And that the PGB mantra works - good ingredients and follow the recipe - you can't mess up. And I didn't!The treats of the week are a little more involved, but look so very good. I haven't managed to try them yet, but the Lemon Cheesecake Cupcakes are calling to me. There are so many choices in this section - perfect for holidays or special occasions. I know what I'm taking to the next pot luck, birthday, office celebration!Blacklock has included gluten-free versions AND vegan versions of all the basic recipes - cake and icing. The last chapter touches on presentation and gifting cupcakes. Each recipe can be used to make either 36 minis, 18 regular or 12 large. The one thing not included is the nutrition information. But really, just go ahead and enjoy one without worrying about calories - or two.....The Prairie Girl Cupcake Cookbook is printed on lovely, heavy stock and is filled with lovely colour photos that will have you salivating. The layout of the book is great and recipes are clear and easy to follow. Blacklock's love of baking and engaging personality shines through all of the chapter introductions and tips in each recipes. If you love cupcakes, this is definitely a cookbook you want to own.Oh, and the name? " The owner, Jean Blacklock, is from Saskatoon and proud of her Prairie roots even though her former careers in law and banking took her to Calgary and Toronto."

Title: Sinfully delicious and totally doable for the home baker. I loved this cookbook.
Review: Cupcakes. Those divine little tasties that look almost too pretty to eat. Almost. In this new cookbook, Canadian baker and now author Jean Blacklock shares some of her favourite recipes. She has a wonderfully down-to-earth voice as she introduces her book, tells a little about her history going from the prairies in central Canada to the owner of three bakeries in Toronto.Jean is the queen of cupcakes and this book is filled with beautifully enticing pictures of her creations as well as tips and tricks. She shares many traditional cupcake recipes such as Golden Buttermilk, Dark Cocoa, Red Velvet and Carrot and also includes more decadent recipes such as Black Forest, Key Lime, Peanut Praline, Strawberry Daiquiri cupcakes. The list goes on and on. They're sinfully delicious and totally doable for the home baker!I appreciated the pantry items section where Jean lists many of her main ingredients and explains why not taking liberties with a recipe, especially a baking recipe, is important. Tip to home cooks - recipe developers don't often enjoy it when you change up their original recipe - especially when it comes to baking because baking is a science, y'all! If you want the same result you've got to follow the instructions. Going for low fat margarine over butter or using the wrong kind of flour etc will effect the outcome of your treat. So I appreciate that Jean takes her readers through various ingredients and why some of these important items should be followed to the 'T'.What I will take away from this book, besides three cupcakes that I inhaled and loads of recipes to try, are some of Jean's tips and tricks. I like to bake. I find it cathartic, creative and I love to share it with others. But even I learned a thing or three from this book. Namely, don't skimp on whipping your butter and sugar together. When I read that I was to cream my butter and sugar in my stand mixer for 8 minutes on medium-high speed I thought it was a typo. Nope. I was amazed at how fluffy the result was and how much of a difference that made to the texture of the cupcake. Which, by the way, was the BEST homemade golden cupcake recipe I've ever made. My quest to find a 'from scratch' white(ish) cupcake is complete! And for those who want vegan or gluten-free? Jean's got you covered with several mouth watering recipes (including icings) to choose from.Speaking of icings, Jean shares a variety of delicious icings from strawberry, lemon and peppermint to homemade lime curd, cafe au lait and even some adult-only variations like Pina Colada! I also plan to use her trick for making delicious fruity icings! After I baked her Golden Buttermilk Cupcakes I topped them with her Orange Icing. O-M-G! It's a perfectly flavoured whipped icing that the kids and I kept dipping our fingers into. It's great if you have a sweet tooth because it makes a lot!The only wee negative that I have about the book is the binding. I love hardcover books because they look nice but for a cookbook I much prefer having a book that will stay open on its own.Overall I was very impressed with this cookbook which focuses on classic cupcake recipes with simple yet impressive icings. The recipes are impressive yet easy enough for the casual home baker to make on their own. Jean can expect a visit from The Baking Bookworm at one of her bakeries in the near future. My Rating: 5/5 starsDisclaimer: My sincere thanks to Appetite-Random House Publishing for providing me with a complimentary hardcover of this cookbook in exchange for my honest review.**This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I share hundreds of book reviews and my favourite recipes. **

Review: Prairie Girl Bakery was a frequent visit when I was living downtown Toronto for school. They had the best cupcakes Iâve ever had and always so yummy. And when this book came out it was placed on my âbuy eventuallyâ list. Fast forward to 2020-21, C****-19 stalled the world and like many small businesses, they were eventually forced to close their locations permanently. This book suddenly was a must buy for me. Baking hasnât been my strong suit but now Iâm working on it. The shop is no longer around to recommend, so Iâll greatly recommend this book! And the cupcakes like no other! Heavenly buttercream~

Review: I bought this immediately after Prairie Girl closed. I felt so sad; no other store or restaurant closure due to COVID hit me in the feels so hard, and I knew I had to have a copy of this book. Anyway, the cookbook is a delightful reminder of office celebrations, wedding showers, get togethers with friends and shopping days. Itâs beautifully assembled, with gorgeous, mouthwatering photos. I look forward to attempting some of the recipes.

Review: I was thrilled to see that there was going to be cookbook containing recipes to my absolute favourite cupcakes....the Prairie Girl Cupcake! The Prairie Girl Cupcakes from the store are moist, delicious and have the most amazing flavoured frostings! I was eager to test out the recipes at home and see how they compared to the ones from their shops. Much to my delight, the cupcakes turned out just like the ones from the shop! This cookbook even tells you which frosting tips they use in order to get the signature Praire Girl cupcake look! This book was worth every penny!
