Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 50 years and star of YouTube’s “The Scotty Kilmer Channel” for DIY car repair (with over 200 million video views), has revised and updated his book: Everyone’s Guide to Buying a Used Car and Car Maintenance. In the book, he shows how to check out used cars for purchase yourself and how to avoid the proverbial used automobile “lemon.” From the initial glance at the dealer (or private seller) through the road test and bartering stage, Scotty shows how to evaluate a vehicle for purchase, and also provides more in-depth tips for experienced do-it-yourselfers. And as a bonus, he also provides tips on essential auto maintenance for all autos, used or not. Whatever your level of sophistication, this book will help keep you from getting swindled in your next car purchase and keep you on the road for many years to come.

Title: Must-have for any used-car buyer
Review: An excellent and engaging read. For a relatively short book, there's a shocking amount of detail, but they're all very well organized and easy to access. Scotty also does a good job of catering to people of different levels of car-expertise.Chapter 1 starts from the very beginning: deciding on which car to buy. Chapter 2 gives detailed advice on where to search for the car. Chapter 3 is a long chapter (also my favorite one) where he tells you everything you should check on the car BEFORE you take it to the mechanic. He even divides this section into three levels of difficulty, for people who want to do the absolute minimum, the average person, and a gear nut. This is followed by Chapter 4 on getting the mechanic to check out your car.Chapter 5 is on the art of purchasing the car, and of course, haggling. Everything was good, except I disagree when Scotty says "cash is king". Yes, this is true, but in 2020, showing this hand early might actually give you a worse deal. In this age of aggressive internet pricing, the dealers now usually derive the majority of their profits from financing and other add-ons. So fronting that you'll be paying cash oftentimes put you at a disadvantage during car-price negotiations. You can do more research on this yourself.Chapter 6 is another one of my favorites and covers maintenance. Again this is broken into "do this absolutely please", followed by a section on the components that needs less care. He understands some people prefer outsourcing most of the work to a mechanic, and some people take a DIY approach. There's something for both crowds here.Overall, a stellar read. Thanks Scotty! Hope your car lasts 200,000 miles.

Title: Scotty Too Hotty
Review: I normally don’t write reviews but I feel like me and Scott* are cut from a similar cloth.. I don’t know what kind of cloth, but I love the technical delivery of his understanding. So maybe a nice plaid? Anyhow, the book is great.. I always wanted to become a “car guy” but I’ve always thought becoming knowledgeable requires a certification—which Scotty makes clear to not trust these certification types with no experience. I am halfway through the book and I’m loving the insight; anxious to apply a mechanical approach to finding those cream puffs.. but I am wondering why the book has consistent misspellings for the same word. And the text alignment is towards the center of the book fold. Will update to 5 stars if I can get a better copy—or a signed copy, whichever is less of a hassle. Thanks Scotty, your something special in this subjective world

Title: This book has saved me time, money and trouble
Review: Scotty does a fine job of telling what to look for when inspecting a car you might want to buy. If you know what to look for, you don't have to keep bringing used cars to a mechanic during your search. Each inspection from a mechanic can cost you anywhere from $75 to $150. All that can add up quickly.I have to say, on every single car I inspected at the smaller used car lots, I found evidence that the cars had been wrecked and unprofessionally patched up. In some cases, these cars had clean Carfax reports. But thanks to the information in Scotty's book, I could tell that they had been wrecked. In the end, I only had to pay for one car inspection. (My mechanic was really nice--he inspected two cars for the price of one inspection.) But if I had not been privy to this information, I would likely have had to pay for several inspections.Scotty also includes info on how to maintain your car so it will last longer and need fewer repairs--essential information for novices like me who need it. Next to your house, your car is likely the most expensive investment you will own. Preventative maintenance now can pay off later in fewer repair bills and extended life of your car.

Review: From a guy who has bought a couple of lemons. This book is a must for someone who knows next to nothing about buying a car. You could probably get a lot of this information from watching videos. Having it all written out in one place helps. Great reference from anyone looking to buy a used car or for car maintenance. Haven't finished reading the whole thing yet, but Scotty Kilmer is a great guy. Love his YouTube channel.
