“A Way to Garden prods us toward that ineffable place where we feel we belong; it’s a guide to living both in and out of the garden.” —The New York Times Book Review

For Margaret Roach, gardening is more than a hobby, it’s a calling. Her unique approach, which she calls “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” is a blend of vital information you need to memorize and intuitive steps you must simply feel and surrender to. In A Way to Garden, Roach imparts decades of garden wisdom on seasonal gardening, ornamental plants, vegetable gardening, design, gardening for wildlife, organic practices, and much more. She also challenges gardeners to think beyond their garden borders and to consider the ways gardening can enrich the world. Brimming with beautiful photographs of Roach’s own garden, A Way to Garden is practical, inspiring, and a must-have for every passionate gardener.

Title: Favorite garden book of all time
Review: I bought the original version of Margaret Roach's beautiful book when it was first published. I was a novice gardener then, and A Way to Garden became my most helpful resource as I struggled to learn the basics of garden design and best practices. There is something very special about this book - it is filled with information, and also wisdom and philosophy. Somewhere along the way, I loaned my book to a friend and never got it back, so I began reading Margaret's blog, which has taught me so much. When I heard that her book was being updated and re-issued, I immediately placed an advanced order, and I was so excited to see the new version. The writing, the photography, the detailed content are all wonderful, and the section on seed-starting is so, so helpful. I recommend this book highly to both novice and experienced gardeners.

Title: Garden of my dreams...
Review: Or reality??? Margaret Roach's revised 'A Way to Garden' is both for me. Age has diminished what I'm able to actually do in my garden but Ms. Roach's beautiful book gives me great joy as I read the words of wisdom she shares. The beautifully written text is lavishly complemented with photos of her vast gardens throughout the seasons, each photo a delight to the eye. I hope you will also love her work and garden as much as I do.

Title: My favorite garden book of all time!
Review: I was a Margaret Roach fan way back when she was garden editor of MSliving. It has been so fun to find her again recently in the form of her delightful and garden-nerdy podcast and blog. Her book is a super treat! I did not read the first edition, but I love this updated version. Her book connects the garden's plants to the insects and creatures that live among them and how to encourage that in every garden. It is filled with all kinds of useful real garden information on specific plants and trees, growing tips, water plant pots, design, what worked and what didn't over decades of gardening, even some recipes. Lots of wonderful photos of her garden. I appreciate her sharing her garden wisdom, in such a beautiful way.

Title: This is a book I wish I had found when it was first published.
Review: This is a well thought out book. It spans the seasons, is full of beautiful pictures, and has even the smallest bits of information, like a chart on how long seeds will last by variety and maker. Charts for planting by last frost dates, when to start seedlings, and how to plan for a bird garden, not just a list of plants they like. I am a Master Gardner, and have gardened for almost 40 years, and still get a lot of good information from the book. Thank you Margaret Roach, for taking the time to do this right!

Title: A lot of information
Review: I have found this book to be very valuable for the great wealth of information included. However I would have liked to see it less of a written diary an include more charts and easy to located snippets of information, how to's.

Review: I'm still reading through it, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The photography is of the author's home garden and is well done. The writing style is conversation and very easy and enjoyable to read. I find it to be a very inspiring book.

Title: The Best
Review: I had already read "The Back Yard Parables" and couldn't imagine that she could top that. But she has!Her revision of "A Way to Garden" demonstrates how much even a great gardener can learn in a decade or two gardening in one place. She sees the garden as a whole: the garden, yes, but also the gardener, and all of the creatures with whom we share this piece of earth. Margaret reminds busy gardeners to stop and look! Yes, you'll learn all the technical things you can ever hope for in "A Way to Garden." But the tech stuff is layered with a unique mindfulness of BEING in a garden, and that there is always something new, something magical --that can stop you right in your tracks. This book appeals both to "head" and "heart"!
