Ear Buds

With more people working from home, and the overall popularity of ear bud usage, many are finding themselves spending all day wearing earbuds. Earbuds and headphones block airflow to your ears, which Sujana Chandrasekhar, MD, an otolaryngology partner at ENT & Allergy Associates, says is not great for your ear health.

How Do Earbuds Damage Your Ear?

Earbuds can lead to excessive wax buildup or ear infections. Since our ears are designed to clean themselves, wearing earbuds can trap or even push in the ear wax that is supposed to be carried out. Excessive wax build-up leads to impacted ear wax that can affect your hearing.

What Can You Do About It?

Make sure your earbuds are always clean every time you wear them. A simple wipe or gentle cleaning solution should do the trick.Clean your ears. Clean your ears regularly. EarClear RX is a great over-the-counter option for cleaning, along with drops for lubrication to ensure wax freely flows.

Hearing Aids

On October 17, 2022, the FDA’s OTC hearing aids ruling went into effect, which lets more buy an affordable hearing aid without a medical exam, prescription, or professional fitting.

What are some hearing aid issues that result from ear wax [cerumen] buildup?

Hearing aid feedback.

Sounds being blocked from entering the ear, devices not fitting properly, ear discomfort, damage to the hearing aid and battery from moisture caused by excess ear wax.

Why are hearing aids associated with ear health issues?

Hearing aids can interfere with the natural cleaning of the ears by blocking the flow of earwax out of the ear. The same challenge has been seen with the use of an earmold with a cochlear implant.

What can you do about it?

Clean your hearing aid regularly and use an OTC ear cleaning solution like EarClearRX to clean your ears and ensure your healthcare practitioner is aware of your challenges.

Seasonal AllergiesSeasonal Allergies

Did you know?

Ear Wax buildup issues can be worse at certain times of the year.

Winter/Cold Climates. As the thermometer drops down, earwax production goes up. Excess earwax production impacts hearing, may cause ringing in the ear and can lead to infections. In sustained cold temperatures, earwax can also harden, causing pain and blockages. Ear drops can soften ear wax.

Allergy Season. Seasonal allergies can cause swelling of the Eustachian tubes, meaning they don't open as they should. This causes the Eustachian tubes to become clogged with the excess fluid and wax.

SwimmersSwimmers

Swimmers & Surfers

What is “Surfer’s Ear”?

Exostosis, sometimes referred to as surfer’s ear, occurs when there is abnormal bone growth within the ear canal. This thickening and constriction of the ear canal can lead to conduction hearing loss. Ear wax and other debris (sand) can become trapped in the canal, which can cause frequent ear infections. The most common cause of exostosis is cold water and windy conditions, which makes exostosis especially prevalent among surfers, outdoor swimmers, and divers. Conversely, “swimmer’s ear” is a bacterial or fungal infection in the ear canal which usually causes swelling and pain.

What can you do?

Clear your ear safelyUse ear dropsDo not use Q-tips / cotton swabsConsider wearing a bathing capCheck with a doctor. Sometimes surgical intervention or special drying agents are required if left untreated.

Title: So gross yet satisfying
Review: My ears have been plugged for almost 3 months because I have been really struggling with allergies. I'm not sure what's going on out there, but I've never had allergies so bad that started Nov 2019 through now. I'm mowing the lawn in the middle of winter which is unheard of It's just all a bit weird, and it's really hard on my body. I started having dizzy spells, and I feel like I'm yell talking because I can't hear. Intuitively I was getting messages about ear wax removal systems. I was thinking there was fluid in my ears, and I never thought about wax being impacted. I had been using a steroid nasal spray, but it says not to use it more than 3 days or your body will get addicted to it. It did help but things would just come back. Anyway, after searching online I thought this would be the best option based on reviews I was reading. I already drank distilled water everyday so I had it on hand. I made sure it was warm and I had a flexible tip. You sort of have to get it just right since it's a sensitive ear area so you really don't want it too hot, but the water cools off quickly and it's not a good idea to spray cool water in the ear. I really didn't know what I was doing I just put the tip in there and was testing it out not pressing too hard on the handle and gaining confidence as I was using it. I actually was doing it with my ear facing down. I cannot believe what came out of my ear it is the grossest thing I've ever seen! A huge chunk of mostly black and brown wax the size of my fingertips. I immediately could hear a little better in that ear. I also had tiny pieces come out of that ear and the other ear. I made the mistake of sending my ex-husband a picture of what came out since he knew I've been struggling for months. He's like, "Why did you send me that?" I explained because he was an ex. Lol. Anyway, I couldn't finish the water I had in the bottle because it was getting too cold and it was irritating my ears. I definitely wouldn't pull the trigger super hard because it's just a really vulnerable area. I would recommend doing ear wax drops a few days prior to get things to soften up. Many places online including doctors recommend that. Doing the drops a few times a day and letting them sit in there a few minutes in each ear. But I can tell my ears are incredibly vulnerable right now. I read it can remove the protective wax that is needed, so I would put cotton in your ears if you're going to be out in the wind or around heavy pollen. Even though it is warm now the allergies are bad and flying around, and I'm going to put cotton in my ears when I'm mowing the grass because I don't need any more issues in there. Even doctors said you could be more vulnerable to ear infections after doing this so be careful after until your body can do what it needs to do and have the regular wax get back in there that is needed for a protective layer. I would absolutely make sure everything is sterile. You don't want to be getting germs in your ear canal just like you don't want germs in a neti pot since people have died from that from organisms getting up in their brain. I've been doing neti pot salt water flushes as well. This was sure worth the money, and I still can't get over what came out of my ear! Also, I read a reviewer say she had to go to urgent care because the little end part came off and went into her ear from the force of the spray. Make sure you screw it on and twist it. If I didn't read the directions I would have just placed it on top and that could have happened to me. I definitely would read the directions as they are very helpful and informative.

Title: Impressively effective
Review: I have hearing aids and occasionally get wax build up. I used an ear cleaner scraper tool with the camera. Had great success in one ear, but seemed to make matters worse in the second. My ear felt full and clogged and my hearing was very muffled. So I ordered this ear irrigation kit. (I used Debora wax softener before in hopes it would make irrigation more productive and effective. Literally used it as soon as it was delivered!Easy instructions, easy set up. I used a little peroxide with warm water. I was concerned it would be a challenge to do on myself, squirting and holding the basin, but it was totally fine.It does feel a little strange but was in no way painful or even uncomfortable. After several squirts, I checked the basin and a decent amount of wax had been easily and painlessly removed!I was pleased but still a little skeptical. So I got the camera tool (without the scraper) and peeked in my ear again. I was shocked to find all the hardened waxy build up was 100% gone! Not messy with the basin. Incredibly effective. I am so happy right now! Ears unclogged, pain gone, hearing no longer muffled.Highly recommend!

Title: probably cheaper at a drug store
Review: Here we are again, didn't read in depth the description of this product, assuming it came with a solution of some sort to penetrate the wax for easier removal. This is literally just a squirt bottle with replaceable ear pieces. Rigid pieces are also that- rigid. I was worried I might go in too deep and puncture something, but it was fine. To be fair, it did remove a bit of trapped wax, so at least it did was it was intended for

Title: Effective and inexpensive
Review: I've frequently had problems with excess earwax, even seeing an audiologist to remove stubborn earwax with limited success. Considering the reasonable cost of this self-serve earwax removal kit, I figured it was worth trying out. This item has exceeded my expectations. After about 15 minutes of usage, I was able to remove some very large pieces of wax from both ears, with little discomfort, and the improvement in my hearing is significant. I am VERY satisfied with the results of this product.A couple of tips for users. Make sure the water is plenty warm. I also filled the bottle with about 20% hydrogen peroxide for the first round. I believe the peroxide helps to loosen some of the more hardened earwax. I then used warm water only, and within a few minutes, several large pieces of wax were dislodged. It probably took about 2-3 bottles worth of spraying before I was able to remove all earwax, but the patience and persistence was worth it.At no point did I experience any pain or discomfort. The spraying action in your ear does feel a little strange at first but it is easy to get used too, especially if the water is warm. Also, I found I was able to hold the drip container and spray in my ear at the same time without issue.I highly recommend this product if you frequently suffer from excess earwax, and you want to be able to take care of the problem at home.

Title: Highly recommended
Review: This is the same thing that Dr Offices/Urgent Care uses for ear wax removal. It comes with exactly what is needed, it’s sturdy/durable, very easy to clean, and trigger functions perfectly. I use it with warm water and peroxide! It’s a must have, no dr visits or co pays

Title: Did't work, doesn't have enough pressure to flush
Review: My doctor informed me that my ears were filled with wax bad. I used debrox drops and the tiny bulb that it came with, and nothing came out but clear water. I bought this spray bottle, thinking that it would do the trick. However, the flow of water out of it is very slow, even when pulling the trigger lever very firmly. After several days of soaking debrox and spraying this bottle, I could still only get clear water out. Eventually I found very large 4oz bulbs here on amazon, and that did the trick!
