Enter a simpler way of living by unhurrying your heart, embracing the relaxed rhythms of nature, and discovering the meaningful gift of growing slow.
We long to make a break from the fast pace of life, but if we're honest, we're afraid of what we'll miss if we do. Yet when going big and hustling hard leaves us stressed, empty, and out of sorts, perhaps this can be our cue to step into a far more satisfying, sustainable pace. In this crafted, inspiring read, beloved author Jennifer Dukes Lee offers a path to unhurried living by returning to the rhythm of the land and learning the ancient art of Growing Slow.
Jennifer was once at breaking point herself, and tells her story of rude awakening to the ways her chosen lifestyle of running hard, scaling fast, and the neverending chase for results was taking a toll on her body, heart, and soul. But when she finally gave herself permission to believe it takes time to grow good things, she found a new kind of freedom. With eloquent truths and vivid storytelling, Jennifer reflects on the lessons she learned from living on her fifth-generation family farm and the insights she gathered from the purposeful yet never rushed life of Christ. Growing Slow charts a path out of the pressures of bigger, harder, faster, and into a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting.
Following the rhythms of the natural growing season, Growing Slow will help you:
Find the true relief that comes when you stop running and start resting in JesusLearn practices for unhurrying your heart and mind every dayLet go of the pressure and embrace the small, good things already bearing fruit in your lifeAnd engage slow growth through reflection prompts and simple application steps
From the Publisher
Life-changing habits aren't always about "doing." Often, they are about UN-doing.
The act of-undoing and un-learning can be a challenge at first, because we've been taught our whole lives that in order to get the great life we want, we have to chase it down. But that's not true. The best kind of life isn't achieved by CHASING THAT LIFE down, but by SLOWING THIS LIFE down -- the one you already have. The best kind of life gives us space and time to enjoy and savor our relationships, our homes, our work, our bodies, and even our food!
Have The Life You've Always Dreamed of With Growing Slow Habits
Jennifer Dukes Lee offers a path to unhurried living by returning to the rhythm of the land and learning the ancient art of Growing Slow.
You can live the great life you want, but it's not the way you think. It isn't about chasing that life down, it's about SLOWING that life down. Hurry says everything is a task to be attacked. Slow says that you get to decide what's important, and you get to reprioritize life in a way that lines up with what matters most. Start by building the Habit of Slow into your life, one act at a time.

Praise for Growing Slow & Jennifer Dukes Lee
Jess Connolly, author of You Are the Girl for the Job and Breaking Free from Body Shame
"My word (phrase) of the year for 2020 was “grow slow.” I can't tell you how much I wish I'd had this book to lead me into those risky, restful, and fruitful days. But living a whole year under that banner convinced me that slow growth is where it's at. It's where striving makes way for joy, where change takes root, and abundance blossoms in front of our eyes. Jennifer Dukes Lee is a great leader and a kind guide, and this is a journey and a book I cannot suggest enough."
Susie Larson, talk radio host, national speaker, and author of Fully Alive: Learning to Flourish, Mind, Body & Spirit
"This is Jennifer’s best book yet. As I worked my way through these pages, I noticed my breathing slowed, my muscles relaxed, and I sensed the invitation to look around and note all that’s right in my world. We’ve bought the lie that God insists on and is somehow impressed by a flurry of activity and productivity, and it’s cost us our very lives. Jesus was never in a hurry. He moved at the pace of grace. Jennifer has given us a treasured inside look at her life and journey so that we might learn to treasure our own plot of land and steward it well. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all because we were never meant to do it all. There are enough hours in the day to live in the rhythms of grace God offers us. Every tired, hurried soul needs this book. I wholeheartedly recommend it!"
Chrystal Evan Hurst, bestselling author and speaker
"Jennifer Dukes Lee always provides a breath of fresh air to the woman who needs to slow down or the woman who is discouraged because life has slowed her down. With a unique grace and time-tested wisdom, Jennifer escorts readers through the uncomfortable and often undesired journey of growing slow—because this is a journey she knows is foundational to consistently living out a beautiful life through every season."
Emily P. Freeman, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Next Right Thing
"Sometimes our most important work is not what we do but what we finally learn to undo. With kindness and honesty, Jennifer Dukes Lee unfolds for us the spiritual discipline of un-hurrying our lives, from the way we spend our time to the way we define success. In a culture obsessed with power, productivity, and upward mobility, Growing Slow is the reminder we need to keep company with the way of Jesus."
Grow Slow and Grow Deep With The Growing Slow Bible Study
In the Growing Slow Bible study, Jennifer Dukes Lee helps readers dig deep into Scripture to reveal how land is a picture of our slow growth into claiming the promises of God.
The land is more than a backdrop for the Bible. It is a central part of the magnificent narrative, from the very beginning when Creator God used dirt to make life on a farm called Eden. Jennifer weaves these biblical lessons into her own experience of the importance of land, gleaned from her fifth-generation farm. The land--both then and now--teaches us how to un-hurry our hurry-sick hearts.
This 6-Week Bible Study Helps You: Gain the courage to slow down + enjoy life Find value in the good things you are already growing. Lay down burdens you've been carrying and recieve healing.

Title: Practical and encouraging
Review: Growing SlowI love Jennifer Dukes Leeâs writing. She effortlessly paints pictures with her words and phrases that can so easily be seen in my minds eye. Not only are her words beautifully written but they are always filled with scripture and wisdom and truth. Growing Slow is more of the same. I assumed from hearing about the book that it would have much to do with the pace that we live our lives. It does, but it is much more. In the first chapter she asks the question âWhat if we could live more thoughtfully in the places where we have been planted?â I think maybe it is not as much about speed as it is about doing just what God created you to do at the pace and in the place He planted you to do it. âGrowing Slow will actually make you better at what you do... your focus is no longer on the pace of your growth. Instead itâs on the depth of your roots.â Growing Slow has much to do with our movement toward spiritual maturity, obedience, and trust in what God is working in us than it does with the pace of our activity. Iâve learned a lot from the personal examples and thought provoking questions included in each chapter. Great book that is practical and encouraging whatever stage you are at in your faith journey.

Title: Gently firm wake up call
Review: In a world that applauds those that go at a fast pace, weâve been fed the lie that hustling more is where will will find happiness. Reality is that a hustling more life deludes us into thinking that a faster race will bring us to faster joy. Jennifer gives us a gently firm wake-up call and reminds us joy wonât be found in speed, but rather in the daily moments we might ignore when we rush through life. It was the confirmation I needed to stop, pause, reflect, and breathe a bit more-Iâm ever grateful.Things I think that set this book apart: the format is approachable and not overwhelming. Each chapter could easily be read in one sitting, there are short open-ended questions at the end of each chapter and an area you can write in your thoughts. I can see this as being a great book club read for nonfiction readers. There is a Bible study companion guide coming out and Iâd love to see how they mesh together for small groups. The book itself is visually lovely and comfortable on the eyes while reading. While the book is not a âfeel goodâ book, I definitely felt more at peace after reading. I think that makes for a good book-one that causes you to think, one that imprints thoughts that make you want to dig further. This book definitely accomplishes that.

Title: Growing Something Beautiful for God
Review: Enriched by the truth of Scripture, enhanced by her trademark storytelling, and ennobled by her heartfelt transparency, Jennifer Dukes Lee has penned her most encouraging book yet: Growing Slow: Lessons on Un-Hurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl. Although in the spirit of slow and small I was determined not to read Growing Slow quickly, I simply could not put it down. Itâs that good! And because I love Jenniferâs writing and insights so much (Iâve read all her books and her blog since 2010), I will go back slowly, savoring every, single word the Growing-Slow way. Itâs a book that you will want to read again (and again) and to share (often). Jennifer, award-winning journalist and farmerâs wife, left a fast-paced, lucrative career to come home to the Iowa family farm to raise crops and kids, two beautiful daughters, Lydia and Anna. Her newfound time led to exciting new ministry opportunities, and Jennifer brought her fast-paced life right along with her. She seized every fantastic opportunity that came her way, until frightening chest pains seized her. Heeding her doctorâs warning to slow down, she let go some activities and turned to Godâs ancient wisdom found in the book of Ecclesiastes and the seasonal cycles of farming life. Jennifer learned that âto everything there is a season, a right time for every purpose under heaven,â which she also knew experientially from living on the farm. Jenniferâs life pace grew more slow, as her soul grew more deep. The result was nothing short of miraculous. This is Jenniferâs personal story, and a spiritually insightful book about cooperating with God to grow something beautiful in your own life, in His good time, for His good purpose, and to reap a bountiful harvest to bless others. Growing Slow is the perfect summertime read. I highly recommend it.âLynn D.
