Okay, so no one actually kills themselves in this book.

The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself pulls you into the early 90’s New York City rave scene, in all its chaotic, psychedelic glory. The narrator grabs you by your wrist and drags you behind two teenage lovers from New Jersey as they tumble through a whirlwind of reckless hedonism that eventually spirals into a dark, devastating world of drug addiction and heartbreak.

As a teenager, Lynn cried, “No one is ever going to write something for me.”

Nearly two decades later, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Nicholas did just that. The gesture came too late for our unlikely heroine, but his heart was in the right place. A broken heart… but a true love.

Reunited after years apart, Lynn and Nicholas embraced their love and sexuality, and embraced each other, despite troubled pasts, despite illness, despite all of their imperfections and mistakes. They shared the kind of honest and shameless connection that few have had the honor of knowing, and most would never understand.

“We’re not hurting anyone. We’re just living life without caring what anyone thinks about us, without caring about the consequences.”

“It’s the coolest way to kill ourselves,” Lynn said.

So turn the page, and pull the trigger.

Title: Gutted and Gorgeous
Review: Nostalgia is a tricky thing. You can hear a song, catch a whiff of specific scent on the breeze, see a picture of some long forgotten place and suddenly, you’re there. Right back there. Re-living memories that may or may not be welcome. You can just as easily be sucked into a vortex of pain and regret as you can find yourself re-living a fantastically lovely moment. Indulging in nostalgia is a bit like opening Pandora’s Box – you know whatever is going to come out is powerful, but whether it’s good or not is to be decided.I found myself firmly encased in nostalgia reading the first half of this book. Although the geography was different, the music, the drugs, the situations, the people, the conversations were so thoroughly reminiscent of my adolescence and college years that I had to stop reading several times to let the memories wash over me. I had to go back and pull up songs that I haven’t heard in 20 some odd years, just because I had to hear them again. I found myself staring off into space immersed in memories that haven’t surfaced in decades. It was fun and interesting and concrete proof that hindsight is 20/20.This book is a story of relationships. It’s a story of one man’s journey through the first half of his life told through his relationships. At the end of the day, that’s all any of our lives are – a string of relationships to people, places and things. The ripple effects of which we allow to define us now and then, past, present and future.Nicholas Tanek has written a somewhat clumsily crafted story about the relationships that formed him into the man he is today. I don’t know how much of this story is true and how much of it is fiction and I don’t care. What I do care about is that even though I could spend an entire review picking apart his writing on technical issues, I have no desire to. Because this book, regardless of its interpretation, is honest. This book is so utterly authentic that it is heartbreaking. You cannot look at a story told with such sincerity and not have it affect you deeply.I had no idea what to expect from this book when I picked it up. I did not expect for it to sneak up and leave me so thoroughly gutted. I did not expect that initial nostalgia to turn into such a deep connection with the storyteller. I did not expect to be writing this review. But I’m so grateful for all of those. Like blocks clicking into place, I reached the end of this book and realized that I was forever changed by it. Not only because it so easily could have been my own story, but because it so eloquently displayed the wounded, triumphant, joyful feeling that you get when you look back on your life and realized that through the mistakes and successes, you are better for it all.I know that this review hasn’t actually told you much about this book. I’ve not even given you character names, really. But you can get all of that from the blurb. I had to write about what this book taught me, what it made me see. Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters. Life and the people we choose to share it with, is what matters. Laced through with love and honesty – that’s the total package.

Title: Moving Story of Love: Seize the Moment!
Review: Nick has lived and loved, made mistakes and learned, and laughed and cried along the way. He crafts a love story so realistic that it leaves me reminded of the greatest loves of my life. Do not waste a moment with the ones you love and together you will make it through the challenges are the messages I leave his book knowing.

Title: This is a triumphant tale that took me on a journey into the deepest parts of my heart and soul
Review: I was pulled into this story from the first paragraph and was frustrated every time I had to put it down. The author's honest account of his love affair with drugs and the actual love of his life is a ride like no other. Nicholas Tanek’s writing has it all—humor, adventure, lessons on love, family, forgiveness and best of all, it’s evidence that somewhere in the world, there is some one for everyone—a special someone that will love every part of who we are without question, hesitation or regret and enjoy every moment of that love being returned to them. The amazing thing about books like this is they have the power of touching those who lack experience but are still interested in seeking and understanding the truth of what others are able to overcome. I happen to be one of those people and I am inspired by this story! This is a triumphant tale that took me on a journey into the deepest parts of my heart and soul and had me question if I have ever really experienced true love—one that is unconditional and accepting of my partner and myself but what I got most from this story was a constant internal spirit check reminding me to be less judgmental (of myself and others) and to embrace my own beauty and believe it when someone tells me that I am.If this is a work of fiction, it is one of the most intriguing love stories I have ever experienced. If this is not a work of fiction, it is the most poetic tribute from one lover to another. If there is not a God, I am pissed because I have always "prayed" for the love that Lynn has given to her and the love that she gives. If there is a God, I can't wait to have that prayer answered. This book will stay with me. And I will continue to tell everyone I know about it.

Title: First let me say I loved his writting style
Review: Wow!! First let me say I loved his writting style. This is not a typical love story. I have read many and his story was very real and very emotional. I could not put it down. I was hooked immediately. What caught my attention was the way he told his story. He actually pulls you in by addressing the reader. Loved it. This story is about his first love to a women who was very hard on herself. She lived a very dangerous dark life. The drug use, her life while married to her abusive husband and her love for Nicholas and her daughter. He starts their story off from day 1 which starts in high school in the 80s. Haha! Loved it! Again be aware their is a lot of drug use. Hey it happens. Another thing he does, he uses lots of music which plays a big part in their life together. The story goes on about how they met and how they became best friends/lovers and essentially he ends up breaking her heart and they lead seperate lives. Both get involved with hardcore drug use and bad marriages. During this part of the story it can get hard for some readers but its real and life can be brutal. Nicholas decided to write her story because he had to. She would tell him "No one would ever write about me". That got me when I read this. Shes such a loving person and she was so hard on herself. But Nicholas loved her and this is their story. A must read for people who struggle with drug use or abuse even selfworth issues. I commend Nicholas story and his writing style. Congratulations! Be fair warned you will break down and cry hard like I did.

Review: It is rare that a book makes me truly stop and think. However ‘The Coolest Way To Kill Yourself’ stopped me in my tracks. If you think you’ve ever taken life or love for granted in the past, then you need to read this book.I initially starting reading this book because we were due to interview Nicholas Tanek for our podcast, ProudToBeKinky. As someone who is constantly disappointed in any novels that embrace kink, I was worried. But they were worries that were totally unfounded. I absolutely fell in love with the story Nicholas told. This book deals with addiction, recovery, friendship, love, passion, kink and loss. All of those themes are dealt with in such an honest and raw way that for me it was impossible not to get caught up in the words. They stuck with me, even in the moments I was not reading and in the following weeks, the words and the message stayed with me.I could tell you how well crafted this books is, or how the characters are believable and well rounded, (as they should be as they are people Nicholas actually knew), I could start saying lots of fancy things about rich vocabulary and literary content, but honestly? None of that stuff registered for me, because this book has something so much better … heart! It has so much heart, and emotion, and depth. It’s raw and I won’t lie, it’s uncomfortable in places, and I loved that. I love that this book took hold of me and went; ‘Look! Look at life through someone else's eyes and feel it.’ And you know what? I did feel it, I felt it so much that I read most of the last few chapters through floods of tears. And I was a better person for it I believe.I told my partner I missed him, I told him I was grateful to have him in my life. I hugged kissed and laughed with my son. I reached out to my friends to check in on them if we hadn’t spoken in a while. I pulled the people I loved close to me, because this book is a hefty reminder that life is often short and cruel. While simultaneously being a bloody big adventure, that we should absolutely seize and enjoy every moment of.I think everyone needs to read this book. Nicholas has written something that is truly a gift to all that read it. I am thankful to have read it. The easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given.

Review: WOW readers this story will stay with me forever,it's an amazing read about Nicholas and Lynn's love. You will become to feel you know them as Nicholas tells a brilliant story,he tells you not to judge but in the beginning you will, you will find that you will think I can't carry on reading as it becomes very dark but please don't stop I'm pleased I carried on. Ultimately finding someone you can love and who loves you for the person you are is the greatest thing which Nicholas and Lynn experience through the toughest of times. This is the greatest and coolest true story I have ever read, I hope everyone reads it.

Review: I bought this book on a recommendation of a good friend. The first part of this book i felt like i was peeking into Nicholas' diary! I couldn't put it down. It hurt me that Nicholas and Lynn loved, broke up, and loved again, and went through the horrors of drug abuse, ultimately leading to Lynn's death. I chatted with Nicholas and he offered to answer any questions i had, the answers to which he explained were to be found further in the book. It was heartwarming to read of Mokey too. Great book, Great Love story.
