Title: Broken down nicely and good exercises
Review: I picked this up form my homeschooled high school student to start preparing for the ACT/SAT in a few years. The book is broken down into many themes, such as prefixes, language origins, common usages, etc. Each lesson is one page and holds around 7-8 words, which can be categorized under the theme. The word is presented along with it's function (noun, adjective, and so forth), and then, the pronunciation is given. A short definition of one line is followed by an example sentence, where the word is used. Then, a sentence or two with interesting tidbits about the origin, related history, or other interesting information surrounding the word is shared. At the end of the page, is an activity box, where the words are quickly revisited in a small exercise. The answers to the exercises are found at the end of the book, along with an index, detailing where each word can be found in the book. It's simple, direct and does a decent job at presenting the words. The simple definition along with interesting facts, do help to remember the word. And the following exercise, although short, is nice. We add quizzes at the end of the week and try to use the words in 'daily use' as well. But we do appreciate this set-up since it adds just a tad bit of extras without steering away from the basics.

Title: Wow. Lots of words.
Review: I couldn't find where it gave a grade level for this book. I would say it's going to be great for people who want to improve their vocabulary for test taking at the high school and college level. This book is split up into sections such as 'Words with French Origins' or 'Animal Vocabulary' etc. Each section might be 2 -4 or 6 pages long. It covers a wide range of words. On each page there is about six vocabulary words. I'm not sure of the distinction but there are three or four main words and then in a little box on the side with another three or four words. All of them pertaining to the section. Each word is defined and a sentence is provided so you can see the word in action. At the bottom of each page there is a little quiz on those words. The quiz might have four or five questions and the format changes. One page might have a multiple choice questions and another page might have a fill in the blank quiz. The important thing is it gives you an opportunity to practice using those words. With all of that said, I don't think I'd call this a workbook so much as a review of vocabulary. If there were longer quizzes or more review or even if the quizzes would continually test words from previous pages then that would be much more helpful.IF you are about to take a big test and want to improve your vocabulary or refresh it, this would be a great option. I use this in my homeschooling with my high school kids. If you are getting ready to take the ACT or GRE this would probably be a helpful resource provided you have time to read the words, practice them and study them. If you want a word of the day to increase your personal vocabulary, this would be a useful book because often you will see opposites together on the same page so you can learn 2-3 words at once.

Title: Great idea but needs editing
Review: I teach local SAT prep courses, and I am considering adding a vocabulary book to my curriculum. This book looked like what I needed and had great reviews, so I purchased a copy to look over. I immediately noticed a mistake. The table of contents has a phonetic spelling beside the word "contents" which indicates it should be pronounced like the adjective "content." That did not concern me too much since the pronunciation of that word is apparently there just for fun. But then as I quickly flipped through the book, I noticed many other pronunciation issues. For example, "introvert" and "extrovert" both had the accent on the wrong syllable. I saw many multi-syllable words that were missing an accent mark altogether. Maybe there are no mistakes in the definitions and word histories, but I certainly don't have time to check them all before I tell my students what book to buy. I'm disappointed that I will not be able to use this book. I need one that I can trust: I can't afford to use my prep time looking for errors and my class time having my students write in corrections.

Review: This book is one of the most accessible vocabulary builder books I have encountered. It is better than flashcards as it is organized based on several themes that are easy to learn and master new words. The exercises at the end of each lesson (one per page) help you check and revise what you have learned. A must-have for anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary--from beginner to advanced learners.
