Doug Varrieur's popular book has expanded…so everyone can get skinnier.
In the original Fat To Skinny Fast and Easy!, Varrieur distilled the “science” behind low-carb eating and laid out an amazingly simple system for eliminating the chief offender in weight gain: sugar. Now, in response to requests from his loyal followers, Varrieur has created an updated edition that combines his successful strategies for lifetime fitness with more than 100 yummy new, low-carb, sugar-free recipes. That makes it even easier to melt away the fat fast while still eating delicious, favorite dishes…and to keep it off for good. For added ease, each recipe has a carb count--and the book comes with an inspirational, motivational CD, too.

Title: Fan-flipping-tastic Instruction on Low-Carb Eating
Review: Just when I thought I'd read the best there is on eating a low-carb diet...A relative example: Gary Taubes' Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It (Vintage) is the simplified version of his previously published Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health (Vintage). Well, Fat to Skinny is the simplified version of Why We Get Fat. You simply cannot misunderstand anything written in this book, it is so easy to read. It doesn't go too deep into how carbs got into too much of what we eat, but definitely enough for the reader to get the gist. The second half of this book is all about eating low-carb. It is literally encyclopedic in scope. FTS is explained very clearly and succinctly. You're even taught how to "dial in" your own personal approach, a section I particularly find worthwhile. Products that support eating this way are named, with purchasing information. Those specialty products are few, by the way. The overwhelming majority of the recipes call for easy-to-find supermarket ingredients. There are rare inclusions of soy flour and tofu. There is moderate calling for nut meal/flour in desserts. Sweeteners used are mostly xylitol and stevia. Sugar-free products such as s-f pancake syrup, s-f gelatin, and CarbSmart ice cream appear, as well. Leave your dehydrators and sous-vide cookers in the cabinet--these recipes are straightforward to prepare. Be forewarned that the recipes involve REAL cooking, not just cheese-and-cold-cut-rolls stuff. There are charts towards the back of the book explaining how to roast, braise, bake, and grill every cut of meat and type of poultry in existence. Very thorough! There's a spice chart that tells you where to put what so as to encourage your own cooking creativity. The book ends with a weights and measurements chart. Portion sizes are also presented in chart form. The audio CD gives you the benefit of listening to the author summarize what is in the book. He also gives insights, tips, and suggestions not mentioned in the book. His voice is cheerful, supportive, and sincere. You can easily sense the spirit in which this work was done. Very charming. I did notice that the book is referred to as yellow on the CD. My edition of this book is the color red. No matter-the audio really helps bring the book alive. You are assured that there is more support at the author's website, which I admit I have yet to visit.I already have a considerable pile of low-carb books. That being said, if I were to choose one reference to explain the nuts-and-bolts of eating this way SUPER SIMPLE, it's this one. For completeness, I have and like The New Atkins for a New You Cookbook: 200 Simple and Delicious Low-Carb Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less (Touchstone Book), but it sells its brand-name stuff. This book doesn't have that limitation. Yep, this one.

Title: Changed My Life!
Review: I rarely write reviews. But I want to spread the word about this book because it literally changed my life. I am in no way affiliated with the author just so that’s understood. When I read this book I really got the sense that he is a very down-to-earth, regular guy just like everyone else…No PHD…Just pure common sense about food. I lost 60lbs. in 6 months (from 250lbs. to 190lbs.) by loosely fallowing his suggestions. Loosely meaning that he recommend no more than 20 carbs per day, I consume about 50-60 carbs a day. Had I done the 20, I guarantee I would have lost this weight in half the time. Aside from the weight loss, our grocery dollars were cut in half as we no longer buy all the things we shouldn’t be eating. Chicken is our best friend….It’s usually on sale at one of the many stores in our area. Grill it/cook it many different ways and you shouldn’t get tired of it plus you’ll be further encouraged by your weight loss and money savings. Chicken, fish, pork, salads, avocados, 2 multi-vitamins/day (One-A-Day brand, they digest) and sugar-free CVS brand Metamucil (you should use this stuff) is my primary diet. I hit a stall at 230lbs, 220lbs, 200lbs. but DO NOT give up…Mine only lasted about 2 - 3 weeks each. I now have more energy than I possibly know what to do with. I don’t get sick anymore. I reversed my type 2 diabetes. Triglycerides went from 250 to 35. Blood sugar from 250 to a consistent 92. All blood work readings normal. Friends and co-workers have been amazed by my weight loss…Just wait ‘til you see someone’s reaction when they see you for the first time in a few months. People are always asking me “how’d you do it?”. I explain. Most always I get the response “Oh, I couldn’t do that. My problem is that I have a sweet tooth.”. Exactly. That is a problem. They refuse to realize that will pass after a few weeks of abstaining from sweets. I guarantee your body/taste buds/cravings will adjust to your new eating habits. And it helps to bullet proof your kitchen from trash foods if possible (I know it’s hard when you have kids, and we do). I can’t thank this author enough. I’m learning to try to be very humble about talking about food when people ask me (I don’t ever want to be Holier-Than-Thou) but it’s hard when I hear people tell me how bad they want to lose weight or reverse their diabetes but tell me something silly like “but I gotta have my bread or sweets”, etc. If I can do it, I think ANYONE can do it. I’ll leave you with what I consider to be a few of the most important words in the English language (and I’m not trying to be dramatic): SUGAR IS THE DEVIL. Thank you for reading.

Review: Especially the bit where he explains about 4g equals a teaspoon - that just put things into context for me! Bought for myself originally as I try to follow a low carb diet, but recently passed on to my twelve year old (bookworm) daughter hoping to try and sway her to cut down on sugar!
