A dark comedy about four women coming together to heal the damage their husbands have done–and hide their bodies once they’ve killed them

When Sally kills her husband with a cast-iron skillet, she’s more fearful of losing her kids than of disposing of a fresh corpse. That just wouldn’t be fair—not after twenty years of marriage to a truly terrible man. But Sally isn’t the only woman in town reaching the brink. Soon, Sally finds herself leading an extremely unusual self-help group, and among them there are four bodies to hide. Can they all figure out the perfect way to bury their husbands . . . and get away with it?

First to join is former nurse, Ruth, who met her husband as a single mom. Now her son is grown and her husband’s violence builds by the day until an attack on the stairs leads to a fatal accident—for him. A few doors down, Samira’s last straw comes when she discovers her husband is planning a campaign of violence against her eldest daughter, who has just come out. Janey, Sally’s best friend, has just had her first child at forty-two. Sleep-deprived Janey needs a hero to slay the monster in the fairy tales she whispers to her daughter each night . . . and as her husband’s violence escalates, it might just be her.

Together, fueled by righteous anger but tempered by a moral core, the four women must help each other work out a plan to get rid of their husbands for good. Along the way, Sally, Ruth, Samira and Janey rediscover old joys and embark on new passions in work, education, and life. Friendship and laughter really are the best medicine—and so is getting away with murder.

Title: Where do I start?!?!?!
Review: I absolutely loved this book! From the first page I was all in! The characters, the bond they create, the quarkiness! Each character was so different and amazing! The twists! I'm telling you I was laughing with them, crying with them, cheering them on and rooting for them! I felt like I knew each woman and loved them all dearly!! I can't say enough great things about this book! It was better than I could have ever expected! Read it! Listen to the audiobook too! They did phenomenally on it!!!

Title: Triggering topics
Review: I thought the commentary on domestic violence was wonderful . While I mostly enjoyed the story I do wish that it had been a little less wordy in a few spots it was still a good story .

Title: It is a great story yet not the "funny" it was claimed to be.
Review: Initially when I bought this book, I thought that I was getting a more fun and lighthearted story about burying ones husband yet I am glad that I found it and gave it chance.I found it to be a sad story that grew into being happy for the women for finally being able to find joy in life again. The strong bond that formed with the women I found to be the best part of reading the book. It really makes me miss friendships from my past.It started out as something I wasn't sure about but ended with me glad to have read a different story than I'm used to.Covid resteictions were rough and getting to glimpse into how it was in the UK and how different it was here in the PA mountains was interesting.I really want to plant that garden now. My mom loved gardening and hearing about Edwina's back yard has inspired me.

Title: Dark Humor
Review: Definitely dark, perhaps gallows humor. Four women pushed beyond the brink, some in physically abusive marriages. Which woman, suffering from physical or emotional abusiveness has not contemplated ending the life of the abuser? The ending was anticipated, yet still affirming.

Title: Dark, but shows the depths of women's friendship
Review: I enjoyed the dark humor but the narrative could drone on incessantly and repetitively. The story would have been served much better with a balanced view between the women’s POVs, rather than relying so heavily on one. Overall, though, I found Sally to be a decent character and impromptu leader for the burial club. She found her strength as many suppressed women do, through their kids and friends. You can’t help but cheer for their success, even if it’s murder. The true gem of the story was the friendship angle. When women rule the world, we'll have a world worth ruling.

Review: This brilliantly plotted and powerfully told novel is a feminist page-turner. Alexia Casale is a phenomenal writer and her depictions of domestic violence and women's reactions and responses is carefully and cleverly wrought. I loved the exploration of female friendship and solidarity and the weaving together of the women's stories against the backdrop of the pandemic. The stakes are high and this is a must-read.
