Anthony Bourdain's long-time director and producer takes listeners behind the scenes to reveal the insanity of filming television in some of the most volatile places in the world and what it was like to work with a legend.

In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable, confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma even to those close to him. Tony’s devoted crew knew him best, and no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and producer, Tom Vitale.

Over the course of more than a decade traveling together, Tony became a boss, a friend, a hero and, sometimes, a tormentor. In the Weeds takes listeners behind the scenes to reveal not just the insanity that went into filming in some of the most far-flung and volatile parts of the world but what Tony was like unedited and off-camera. From the outside, the job looked like an all-expenses-paid adventure to places like Borneo, Vietnam, Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Libya. What happened off-camera was far more interesting than what made it to air. The more things went wrong, the better it was for the show. Fortunately, everything fell apart constantly.

Title: Journey Through the Lens: 'In the Weeds' - A Tribute to Bourdain's Legacy by Tom Vitale
Review: "In the Weeds: Around the World and Behind the Scenes with Anthony Bourdain" is a gem of a book, crafted with the unique perspective and deep understanding that only Tom Vitale, Bourdain's long-time director, could provide. This book is a five-star journey, not just through the adventures and culinary exploits of Anthony Bourdain, but through the eyes of someone who knew him intimately.Vitale's role as director for many of Bourdain's shows gave him a front-row seat to the complexity and vibrancy of Bourdain's life. This proximity and understanding translate into a narrative that is rich, authentic, and deeply personal. As you turn the pages, it's evident that this is not just an observer's story, but a heartfelt recount from someone who shared in the adventures, the challenges, and the triumphs. The book does more than just narrate events; it captures the essence of Bourdain's spirit. Vitale's insights into Bourdain's character and his approach to life and food bring a level of authenticity that is rare and precious. It’s this authenticity that makes the book so compelling and engaging, offering readers an opportunity to experience Bourdain's world through a lens that is both intimate and insightful."In the Weeds" is an extraordinary tribute to Anthony Bourdain. It encapsulates his relentless curiosity, his passion for food and culture, and his unyielding desire to delve deeper into the human experience. For fans of Bourdain, enthusiasts of travel and culinary exploration, or anyone who appreciates a well-told story of adventure and humanity, this book is an absolute must-read. Title: Interesting but dwelled on mostly negatives….
Review: The author has a great voice. Reading was like he was sitting across from and speaking directly to me. The journey was told in a way to keep your attention. I’d buy a book from this author again and for any fan of the author’s subject matter would enjoy the book so good gift. My only negative comment is the book really focuses on dark, depressing, and negative aspects of the author’s memories. Why not add something positive? Why work for a guy who is being portrayed as a real jerk? Why want a friend who is so mean spirited? The author was “shocked” so many mourned Bourdain’ death. I’ll never watch any Bourdain shows without feeling the man was a bully.

Title: If Anthony Bourdain interests you, you need to read this book
Review: Tom Vitale writes a captivating and alternately delightful and horrifying portrait of Anthony Bourdain. His professional association with Bourdain spans something like 15 years and most of it on the road. Bourdain and his small band of storytellers, bonded by the intimacy and frequency of the experience, united by the end goal of creating a compelling gastro-socio-political portrait of each of the places they visit gradually become a family, albeit a dysfunctional one. Vitale is astonishingly forthcoming about his insecurities working for the inscrutable, and often cruel, Bourdain who also is irresistible in his quixotic charm. Bourdain's sudden suicide turns Vitale's world upside down as he tries to recover from losing "the best job in the world." He is insightful and smart and unafraid to include the tough stuff. It is quite a read and one I recommend with No Reservations.

Title: Who Knew
Review: Great story from someone who was there from the beginning to end. Things aren’t always what they seem. So much I didn’t know. It’s so sad that from the outside someone can look so together and strong yet hurting so deeply and always searching. Thank you Tom for telling us what your saw and ended up learning in the end. Hope you are doing well now and thank you for sharing.

Title: an ode to Bourdaib
Review: At first it seemed like it was Tom’s memoirs through years and years of directing and producing Tony’s show. But it is an homage to Tony.

Title: The Whole Picture
Review: This book does what I think has been so hard to do when talking about Anthony Bourdain, which is that it gives the whole picture. The good, the bad, the complicated, the insanity, the willfulness, the paranoia, the love of life, the fear of the unknown. Full disclosure: I worked on Anthony's shows for many years, just as the author, Tom Vitale, did. This book does a better job of capturing the complicated, brilliant mess that was Tony and the projects he invited us along to make than anything I've seen or read. It is a joyous celebration and a much needed eulogy of a person none of us are ready to let go of, even now. "In The Weeds" is an insider's look, but it is so much more than a travelogue. It is a love letter, and a letter of thanks to our cult leader, Tony Bourdain.

Title:
Review: A marvellous and compelling book, part memoirs of the author's time as director/producer of the filming of several food-travelogue films made with Anthony Bourdain, part personal introspection of trying to come to terms with Tony's death by suicide. The reader is allowed access into the tiny film crew's struggle to film in often dangerous situations and tie it all up into a mesmerising finished programme, always with Bourdain both centre stage and in the background. Just like this book.As a personality Anthony Bourdain, to his readers and viewers alike, was huge and his death both shocked and saddened many, myself included. This book by someone who shared over a decade in close association with him throughout his latter years, is also a personal memoir about the author's own struggle to come to terms with the loss.A mesmerising and honest account of a forceful, if troubled, personality by a man who lived closely with him, saw him at his best and worse and is trying to come to terms with his loss

Review: Tom Vitale’s story of his life on the road with Anthony Bourdain is a must read. Watching the shows as a consumer of travel shows, I had no idea the tension and stress and successes a big show of each show I watched. I will probably end up reading it again in the future

Review: I read this book in a very short time as I kept having to squirrel myself away for just one more chapter. I loved the honesty of the complex relationship Tom had with Bourdain and was moved by his love for him as well as his anxieties. I watched all things Bourdain over lockdown and I loved reading about the crazy stories behind the scenes that made those incredible shows. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Bourdain and his shows. This was a warts and all account and I appreciate knowing more about those shows as they were so brilliant.
