Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure tale, celebrated editor-in-chief of The Wine Economist Mike Veseth takes his readers Around the World in Eighty Wines.

The journey starts in London, Phileas Fogg’s home base, and follows Fogg’s itinerary to France and Italy before veering off in search of compelling wine stories in Syria, Georgia, and Lebanon. Every glass of wine tells a story, and so each of the eighty wines must tell an important tale. We head back across Northern Africa to Algeria, once the world’s leading wine exporter, before hopping across the sea to Spain and Portugal. We follow Portuguese trade routes to Madeira and then South Africa with a short detour to taste Kenya’s most famous Pinot Noir. Kenya? Pinot Noir? Really!

The route loops around, visiting Bali, Thailand, and India before heading north to China to visit Shangri-La. Shangri-La? Does that even exist? It does, and there is wine there. Then it is off to Australia, with a detour in Tasmania, which is so cool that it is hot. The stars of the Southern Cross (and the title of a familiar song) guide us to New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. We ride a wine train in California and rendezvous with Planet Riesling in Seattle before getting into fast cars for a race across North America, collecting more wine as we go. Pause for lunch in Virginia to honor Thomas Jefferson, then it’s time to jet back to London to tally our wines and see what we have learned.

Why these particular places? What are the eighty wines and what do they reveal? And what is the surprise plot twist that guarantees a happy ending for every wine lover? Come with us on a journey of discovery that will inspire, inform, and entertain anyone who loves travel, adventure, or wine.

Title: A fantasy trip to many, if not most, winemaking countries of the world that should pique your interest in wine.
Review: I quickly got into the book with his analogy to Around the World in 80 days, as he took us through London as Phileas Fogg might have done. Mike had a more difficult time than Fogg did due to all the new world areas but managed to get most in.I disagreed with several of his choices but they were a cross-section of what people with varying degrees of knowledge might try. While I am not a fan of Two-Buck Chuck or Fred Franzia, the wine has won some medals. It proves a point: if you want to win, don't go to extremes, go right down the middle. This is not what I am about any more than ratings by Parker or anyone else. I want to know the passion of the winemaker in his/her quest to make the perfect wine. Statistics however show that the vast majority of wine drinkers are not oenophiles and when my uncle was in a retirement community I always knew what wine would be served when invited for dinner: Two-Buck Chuck...boring...to me at least!Mike suggests you think which wines you would choose...like the "which wine would you take with you to a desert island." A good read!

Review: It is a fun read, but in Some cases I consider the wines/wineries discussed not interesting.

Title: Fun to read and full of wine discoveries
Review: I love all of Mike Veseth’s wine books, but this one might be a new favorite. This book takes you on a journey through the wine world, and I find it unexpectedly fun to discover which bottles make the cut for the author’s suitcase along the way. As we go through famous, and much more unexpected regions, we discover the business, political and people stories behind the wines, which provide useful context to learn about the wines themselves. Great fun reading for wine enthusiasts at all levels. And for those studying for wine certifications, the stories here will make the wine facts (some explained here, and others you might be studying in your own wine textbooks) that much easier to remember. Trouble memorizing what Tawny Port is? There’s a story here that can help make it stick.
