1/4 SOCK HEIGHT

Sits just above the ankle. The “just right” height that’s fast and light. Great for low-cut hikers and running shoes.

ULTIMATE COMFORT

No slipping, no bunching, and no blisters. The ultimate fiber for breathability and comfort in all conditions, the All Weather Performance means cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

CUSHION DENSITY

The versatile lightweight yarns in the Hike/Trek category maintain a low profile in modern trail footwear and proper performance on multi-day trips.

TRUE SEAMLESS

Undetectable seam fusion for an ultra smooth, invisible feel. Darn Tough uses high density knitting techniques, which means there are more stitches per inch. This leads to a more comfortable, durable, great fitting sock with no added bulk.

SUSTAINABILITY

Darn Tough aims to improve the well-being of our community by locally designing and manufacturing the most comfortable, durable, best fitting socks while continuously reducing our environmental impacts.

MATERIALS IN OUR SOCKS

Every material we use in our socks has been carefully chosen and tested to meet our rigorous durability standards. We currently use natural and synthetic fibers, and only 3 types of fiber per sock. As you’d expect, we are actively investigating and testing new fibers and yarn blends that do not appear in our current products. We’ve prioritized Merino wool throughout our product lines and our goal of producing the most responsibly made product is reflected in our commitment to the success of the Responsible Wool Standard.

merino woolmerino wool

MERINO WOOL

Merino wool is the most important and relied upon fiber in our products and accounted for 56% of our yarn consumption by weight last year. For many years we’ve prioritized the use of Merino wool exclusively from sheep that have not been exposed to the practice of mulesing. In early 2019 we made a commitment to support the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and shift 100% of our wool supply to RWS-certified Merino wool.

RWS is a voluntary standard with strict guidelines to protect animal welfare and adhere to progressive, sustainable farm and land management practices while maintaining traceability throughout the entire supply chain.

Although the market share for RWS is only estimated at ~1% of global wool production, the number of certified sources has grown substantially over the last couple years. Today, 100% of the wool we procure is RWS-certified.

recycled nylonrecycled nylon

RECYCLED NYLON

We use REPREVE, a nylon 6 fiber made from pre-consumer industrial waste that would otherwise be landfilled or downcycled. Using REPREVE instead of virgin nylon allows us to offset the use of crude oil, benzene, cyclohexane, and other harmful hydrocarbons that are involved in the production of virgin fiber. In short, using recycled nylon conserves energy and water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing. While we aim to reduce our use of virgin nylon in our products, recycled nylon only accounted for 4% of our nylon consumption last year.

We’re actively working with our suppliers to source more recycled nylon so we can incorporate it across our product lines. To date, nylons generated from pre-consumer waste material have held up well against our durability requirements, but we’d like to find an equally good source of post-consumer recycled nylon or yarns that blend both pre and post-consumer nylon.

spandexspandex

SPANDEX/ELASTANE

We use Lycra to provide elasticity, strength, and form-fitting comfort. While spandex accounts for no more than 5% of the fiber used in our finished product, it represented 27% of the raw materials we procured last year. Like conventional nylon, spandex is derived from petroleum and has been important to the performance of our products. Unfortunately, it’s the most difficult material in our fiber mix to replace with a recycled alternative.

When it comes to synthetics, we’re primarily focused on converting virgin nylon and polyester to recycled alternatives. However, we’re also looking for functional, recycled spandex alternatives.

SOCK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

We live and work in Northfield, Vermont. Our backyard is the perfect testing ground to make the finest Premium All Weather Performance Socks. We ski, snowboard, hike, bike and run in the most unforgiving climate in the lower 48. It is under these conditions that we design, test and manufacture our socks.

STILL MADE IN VERMONT, USA

After so many decades why do we still knit every pair of our socks here in Vermont? We don’t do it because it’s the easy thing to do—we do it because it’s the right thing to do. We do it because for us, it’s the only way to do it. There are faster and cheaper alternatives but nobody ever outsourced anything for quality.

ONE FAMILY - We are family owned. For 40 years we’ve been knitting socks in the Green Mountains ONE MISSION - Darn Tough is a family-owned, American manufacturer of end-use-specific socks. ONE MILL - Every step of the knitting process happens right here, by us, locally, in Northfield, VT

Title: Perfection!
Review: These are the most comfortable socks I've ever worn, and they fit perfectly! I had bought XL in the past, but they were too big, even though the chart said XL would fit my feet. I wear a 14 wide in boots, but I bought the large this time, and the fit is much better. There isn't a bunch of extra material in the back of the heel like with the XL. These 1/4 socks come up to the perfect height wearing them with Keen mid height hiking boots. I'm going to buy a pair for everyday of the week I like them so much. They have a lifetime warranty, so I'd never have to buy socks again. They're so much better than cotton socks. The difference is night and day between them! Your feet stay much cooler. I just spent $160 on eight pairs of the no show socks for everyday wear. That's how good these are! The socks in my picture are the taupe ones, but they look grey to me.

Review: These are the best socks! Don’t be put off by the high price, as you will have these socks for years. They are true to size, comfortable and just the right thickness.

Title: Great from the start!
Review: After a lot of research for a pair of socks to withstand a 200 mile hike, Darn Tough came up time after time. The socks aren't cheap, but they are made in Vermont and guaranteed for life. I figured give them a try.Once I put them on, I realized why my research said these were great socks. First off, they feel seamless. You are not fiddling with making sure the sock is on your foot properly. It seems designed for the shape of your foot. I have already put some miles on these and they do not twist, bind, or go out of place as I walked. These pairs had a lot of cushioning for hiking. They work well with the nice hiking shoes I have. Comfortable and minimize some of the foot pounding on my hikes. The only drawback is that I have used them during the summer and they can be warm. I believe they have thinner socks if that is an issue.Very happy with the purchase. Happy to be buying from an American company. Love knowing that if these socks ever fail, you contact the folks in Vermont and they send you a return label and ship you a new replacement pair. I guess this will be my last pair of hiking socks I will ever buy.

Title: Worth it
Review: I am hard on socks, for years it has been a pet peeve that I could not find and nobody seemed to make good socks any more. It does not matter which name brand you buy Hanes, Fruit of the loom, Carhartt, ectNone of them last anymore cause they all come out of the same POS factory in China. These socks from Darn Tough wear their name, they may have a premium price but I have a couple pair going on a year and a half and they show virtually no wear. These socks come with a lifetime warranty and this company is not concerned about it because they actually produce a product that will meet that expectation. They are comfortable to wear, if you have wide feet they will be a snug fit.To me these are the only socks worth buying anymore.

Title: A little warm, gets funky fast
Review: Bought for a 4 day camping trip with some light to moderate hiking. Socks were comfortable and held up well. They were a touch warmer than i might have liked, but nothing that made them problematic. After the first day doing about 4.5 miles they were already super funky smelling. Fine after a wash and they're definitely going to become my go-to hiking socks

Title: Great for trekking
Review: I used this to walk the Camino in Europe. Because of all the mud, my feet were often wet. These socks dried fast and did not give me any blisters. I'm a big fan now. This is the second year in a row I have used them walking +20 miles a day on average. You'll like them.
