Title: Simply Exceptional!
Review: The Transformational Leader was simply exceptional. I was a big fan of Matt Mayberryâs Culture Is the Way, but this book fits its title well as itâs transformative in so many ways. I went ahead and purchased 15 additional copies for my team and we will be having team discussions on it together for the next four weeks!

Title: âLeadership, as we know it, is extinct.â
Review: POP QUIZ! NO CHEATING!#1. What are the five pillars of every great leader? (Extra Credit: List at least one specific action step for each pillar in the âCode of Leadership.â)#2. What are the five imperatives in a leaderâs Communication Toolbox? (Hint: âAdapt Your Styleâ is Imperative 3, but what are the three learning styles that may require you to adapt your own communication style?)#3. What are the five pillars of emotional intelligence? (Extra Credit: List one action step for each pillar. Hint: Try a team-building exercise with a tent and a blindfold!)#4. What are the four coaching imperatives? (Extra Credit: List three popular excuses for why many leaders do not invest time in coaching their team members.)#5. What are the five sacrifices of transformational leadership? (Have you ever thought about this before? See the five warnings for wanna-be leaders!)ANSWERS? (Sorryâ¦youâll need to read this powerful new book.)Iâm partial to any author who once played pro football for the Chicago Bears and delivers fresh and practical content in bite-sized portionsâperfect for your weekly staff meetings. Matt Mayberry checks all the boxes and his new book is jam-packed with wisdom, encouragement, and frequent pokes-in-the-ribs for every leader.Much like Marshall Goldsmithâs warning, âWhat got you here, wonât get you there,â Matt Mayberry is concerned about the leadership crisis today. âLeadership, as we know it, is extinct,â he writes. âMany leaders still use management competencies learned early in their careers despite changing workplace dynamics.âHe adds, âLeadership isnât just a title; itâs a ripple effect. Great leaders can inspire us, but bad ones, driven by ego, can wreak havoc.âI took my own medicine and approached each of the 27 short chapters with a âPop Quizâ exercise. Example: Mayberry introduces a topic with three, four, or five key pillars or principlesâand Iâd try to guess what they were. (Apparently, Iâm not a good guesser and I still have much to learn.) I came close with one or two ideasâbut his full lists are PowerPoint-worthy. And as I mentionedâperfect for your lifelong learning moments in your weekly staff meetings.MORE EXAMPLES:⢠âThe 8 Building Blocks of Inspirational Leadership.â Yikes! I may have overemphasized my focus on resultsâto the neglect of people. Mayberry notes a survey of 60,000 workers that gave higher ratings to leaders âwho adopted a dual focus on results and people.â⢠LOL! Mayberry explains why âSkillâ is not listed first on the â6 Components of the Influence Modelâ (Head, Heart, Skill, Connect, Trust, and Inspire). He writes, ââ¦thereâs a good reason itâs not number one, and that reason is the talented jerk we all encounter at some point who produces incredible results but destroys everyone around them.â He quotes Charles Swindoll, âLeadership is influence. To the extent we influence others, we lead them.â⢠Youâll appreciate Mayberryâs precise choice of wordsâexplaining why we must address ineffective leadership models (âwith all its traditional wisdomâ). It requires debunking, dismantling, and abandoning the old leadership lingoâand moving to a gardening and cultivating mindset. (This reminded me of Gen. Stanley McChrystalâs metaphor in his book, âTeam of Teams.â)KEEPERS. The featured quotations are keepers (Churchill, Spurgeon, Eleanor Roosevelt, Tom Landry, Indra Nooyi, Warren Buffet, Craig Groeschel, and numerous other leaders). In his chapter on âAuthentic Leadership: Leading with Integrity,â Mayberry reminds us, ââ¦we do not define leaders by their rise to prominence, but rather by their ability to resist external pressures at the top, where temptation is the strongest.â (See also âThe Leaderâs Palette,â by Ralph E. Enlow, Jr.)A CONTINUOUS JOURNEY. With insightful color commentary from sports, coaching, and the military, âThe Transformational Leaderâ will inspire you to elevate your aspirations. âExcellence isnât a destination but a continuous journey of challenging ourselves to become better that we were yesterday.â Last week, I watched the new documentary film from Amazon Prime, âThe Blue Angelsâ (2024)âthe perfect companion piece to this book. I urge you to view this documentary with your team and host a conversation on excellence, discipline, teamwork, succession planning, and much more.THEREâS MORE!Mayberry notes that for an August preseason NFL game, prior to the 2023 season, Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel âstunned the football world and left us all in awe. Recognizing the ambition of assistant coach Terrell Williams, Vrabel stepped aside to let him take over the full scope of head coaching operations against the Chicago Bears.â Williams had the âwhistle and clipboardâ from Thursday afternoon until after the game on Saturday.â (Wow! You donât see that oftenâin any organization!)When KPMG challenged their team members to generate 10,000 stories on this global companyâs impact on societyâthey received 42,000 âWe Shape History!â stories! (How many impactful stories in your organization?)Mayberry quotes Tom Peters: âLeaders donât create followers, they create more leaders.â And howâs this for an interview question from another CEO? âDonât tell me everything youâve done or accomplished. Give me examples of how you have helped others grow.âOKâ¦just one more Pop Quiz Question: Name âThe 5 Core Tenets of Effective Leadership.â (Hereâs a hint from the author: âLet me ask a blunt question: how can someone lead others if they canât lead themselves?) This reminded me of Steve Brownâs helpful book, âLeading Me.âBottom Line: If youâre planning to showcase your same old/same old leadership to the next wave of coworkers and team membersâgood luck! Iâm urging you to add this important book to your leadership library. (You do have a leadership library, right?) And thanks to the author for sending me a review copy.

Title: WOW! You should read this now! THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER by Matt Mayberry
Review: We think, sometimes, there's not a magical being left on earth. Not one brave knight, not one single fairy princess gliding through secret forests, enchanting rabbits and butterflies with her smile. We think that sometimes ours is an age that has moved past frontiers, past adventures and more. That the magical essence called Destiny is something over the horizon and unreachable. You're wrong. Knights, Kings, Queens, Princesses, and Alchemists are here and now, and they have lived here on earth forever. We just didn't know. But Matt Mayberry knows and through his powerful storytelling, he reminds us that we can all become more of a magical being on this earth as we grow into a "Transformational Leader." Imagine changing the world as you wish! Imagine igniting that blue-fire voltage arc in your body and transforming your world into gold...into something that will affect those around you, and ultimately, the world. As a fan of Matt Mayberry's books, including the Wall Street Journal bestseller, CULTURE IS THE WAY, 2023, and WINNING PLAYS, 2016, I couldn't wait to read this new one. THE TRANSFORMATONAL LEADER: How the World's Best Leaders Build Teams, Inspire Action, and Achieve Lasting Success is more than just a book about how to become a more impactful leader. It's about the individual and that person's own private call to action. It does not matter if you're working in a typical leadership role or not. It does not matter if one is working as an office clerk, or a CEO of a major corporation. Everyone has the opportunity to become a transformational leader. To transform your world one day at a time. Every little thing you do affects the "whole" and can contribute to an impactful and powerful outcome. The thing is, and this is something I recognize more and more with each passing day, we are all "in this thing called Life" together. No man is an island. Every thought and deed will affect the outcome of everyone else's experiences. Once we realize how connected we all are, perhaps we will stop wasting time arguing over silly things and use our talents for the good. Matt's new book, THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER, shows us how by analyzing and redefining leadership as a whole. It provides personal stories that illustrate shifting perspectives and the ongoing importance of always evolving to that next role. We are living in an age that's evolving rapidly and we are given the opportunity to continually grow and expand as leaders in our own world. Matt's new book gives wings to the imagination and helps us realize our true potential. We can become the dragon fighters as we embrace evolving into THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER.
