The Nomination is a fast-paced action and suspense thriller that brings events from the final days of the Vietnam War into direct conflict with contemporary American politics. Vietnam War hero and Massachusetts Judge Thomas Larrigan is hand-picked by his friend the president to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court. Larrigan seems like the perfect candidate: a family man with an uncontroversial judicial record. The president’s credibility needs a sure bet. Larrigan will do anything to win the nomination, but he has some old skeletons rattling around in his closet. He calls his old Marine buddy, now a hit man, to sweep the closet clean. But there are a few skeletons Larrigan doesn’t know are still alive. The Nomination is the story of how lives can intersect in deception, desperation, revelation, death, and, ultimately, redemption.

Title: An Unassuming Hero of World War II - Sir William Stephenson ('Intrepid')
Review: This is a fascinating story. Canadian industrialist and master spy Sir William Stephenson (i.e. 'Intrepid') was obviously a brilliant man who saw ominous signs in Europe after World War I. His business connections and unassuming demeanor gave him access to Germany and all of Europe during the period between world wars. His first-hand experiences in World War I gave him insight into imminent dangers related to the rise of Nazism in the 1930's. His character gave him access to what would be the main Allied leaders and he got their attention. The intelligence networks that he organized and operated were the few promising 'tools' that Britain had early in the war, before the U. S. officially entered the war. Stephenson also forged a relationship of mutual trust with Franklin Roosevelt that was instrumental in the U. S. quietly preparing for the war when public opinion was vastly isolationist. Somehow, I never thought about attempted Nazi influence in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Stephenson's network, in conjunction with the FBI, largely thwarted these efforts early in World War II. I could go on, but take my word that this book is fascinating. This book was written in the 1970's and features a foreword written by William Stephenson himself. Some may and questioned the authenticity of the information presented in this book. Stephenson clearly states that he can vouch for the authenticity of the information in this book. Verification of the information is largely impossible, even after 70+ years. I will let other readers decide if they believe what they read. If the central character of the book puts his word and credibility on the line, that is good enough for me.I summarized the mood of the book as 'dark'. That summary was my prevailing opinion as I read the book, based on some rough parallels I noted between recent events and events of the 1930's-1940's.While the book was fascinating, it was a bit hard to read at times. It did not always follow chronological order which bugged me a bit, but that is a very minor point. This book is well worth the effort to read.

Title: Interesting book
Review: A lot of twist and turns. Had a bit of a problem keeping up the many characters . Because speakers were not always identified, there were times when I was not sure who was speaking.Good story line. Interesting characters. Situations and actions were well described.I didn't like the unknowns at the end. Other than that, agoogread

Title: Keeps you reading all the way!
Review: This book was just fun to read. It's well written, has great character development and a plot that has you on the edge of your chair. It's also very contemporary as it reflects the current political climate in many ways. Perhaps it's always been this way......Perhaps not. It's certainly not a predictable book, but the characters all act in ways that are congruent to how they are portrayed -to the very end. A not-too-deep, not too frivolous psychological thriller. Good company in a shut-down world during a pandemic.

Title: Well done story
Review: An enjoyable book. The characters are strong and well defined. The backstory is well told. The events and circumstances certainly seem realistic (or is it just my jaded view of politics?). The pacing is good. I was worried about how the book would end and wrap up the story, but the ending is cleaver. It was nice to have this as a single book, not part one of a long series. I plan to read more from this author.

Title: Make it 3-1/2
Review: On the whole a pretty good tale but downgraded from four stars due to some slow biographical parts on the way which seemed a bit overdone.

Title: A good but not great read
Review: When I saw the premise of the story, being very interested in politics, I was eager to read "The Nomination". I'm no prude, but it seemed the sole purpose of the author was to describe searing, sex scenes. The "political" portion of the novel was totally unbelievable. No would-be president is going to choose a running mate without totally vetting that person. And, like it or not, no believable candidate , in today's world, would choose a gay running mate. The story onl;y used the political part in a way that belied the title and the premise. The main character, while interesting, was not believable. No one who survived her beginning would allow her husband to use her as a door mat. Also, we were never told just why she owed him so much. Only that he had helped her get to where she was. She said this repeatedly, while his luke warm love for her was evident throughout the story.

Title: Fast-paced and well-written thriller
Review: If you're looking for a page-turner, this is it! I liked the lead character, and the character development in general was rich and satisfying, as was the ending of the novel! I will be reading more books from this author.

Title: Terrific, as usual from Mr. Tapply
Review: Sometimes when a writer has a book that is not about their normal character (like Brady Coyne), it is a disappointment. That's certainly not the case here. This is a real page-turner and there are surprises around every corner. When you have an ongoing character like Brady Coyne, you understand that he really can't be killed off along the way, no matter how dangerous his current situation is. With a one-off book like this, you can never be sure of who will be around at the end of the book, and that adds to the tension. The only disappointment is knowing that we will not have more books from this terrific author to look forward to. William Tapply, you will be missed!
