_______

From the million-copy-bestselling author of The Letter, Kathryn Hughes, and inspired by true events, an unforgettable, moving and timeless story of love and war which will stay with you for ever. Readers who adored The Nightingale, The Notebook or The Tattooist of Auschwitz will love to unlock The Memory Box...

Jenny Tanner opens the box she has cherished for decades. Contained within are her most precious mementoes, amongst them a pebble, a carving and a newspaper cutting she can hardly bear to read. But Jenny knows the time is finally here. After the war, in a mountainside village in Italy, she left behind a piece of her heart. However painful, she must return to Cinque Alberi. And lay the past to rest.

After a troubled upbringing, Candice Barnes dreams of a future with the love of her life - but is he the man she believes him to be? When Candice is given the opportunity to travel to Italy with Jenny, she is unaware the trip will open her eyes to the truth she's been too afraid to face. Could a place of goodbyes help her make a brave new beginning?

Title: Lovely Immersive story
Review: The Memory BoxThis is my first book by Kathryn Hughes. The Memory Box has a dual timeline with a story weaving in and out between the 1940s and 2019. The first-person narration by Jenny and the third-person narrative to show Candice’s life seamlessly blend well across the chapters. The book starts slow and picks up a little in pace as the story moves ahead. The actual “story” takes place after 2/3 of the book however it was an easy read. The focus isn’t much on the setting but rather the thoughts of the characters. Jenny feels real with her strengths, flaws, and uncertainties. Candice, well, there are girls like her. Can’t tell you how many times I wanted to shout at Candice to make her see what everyone around her saw. I think the author drove her point straight in about toxic relationships using Candice and Beau.I tried to stay with the story and not guess the “twists” or reveals. And there were about five reveals toward the end. I figured out two straight away but the others creeped up on me.Overall, it’s an immersive read and it’s a pleasure to be transported to Italy and Wales.

Title: Artfully described
Review: The author is a literary artist. I often stopped to marvel at the descriptions and observations made tangible by her words. The story will draw you in and reward you with multiple surprises. I suspect K. Hughes has keen social perception as an individual and has the skills to put into words those subtle cues that allows the reader to bond with the characters, especially Jenny and Candice. A work of fiction but it makes well researched use of historical facts. If you’re traveling to Italy, you can read this entire book on the plane. Or better yet poolside at your villa destination. Ciao.

Title: Delightfulenough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, which an artful author will always do
Review: Just a delightful novel, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, which an artful author will always do and Kathryn Hughes does beautifully. My only issues with her are factual ones. For example, Italy, especially northern Italy does not have a tropical climate ad the author seems to infer. Another thing is that Italians don't say "bulb pomeriggio" in the afternoon, they say "bona sera". Food wise, Italians don't serve croissants for breakfast as that is a French pastry which you will not find in Italy and lastly, when she described the coffee that was delivered to the room in the hotel, she describes the character as pushing down on the handle as if it were so called " French prrss" coffee, which you would never find in an Italian hotel. Author Kathryn needed to have an Italian read her book prior to its release. Just saying.

Title: A truly memorable story.
Review: I loved the characters, obviously. But even more, I loved the way the author went back and forth through time without it jarring. The transitions were very smooth. The many different points made by the author were well written without being cloying or maudlin. I look forward to finding more of her work!
