“This book is pure culinary fun!” —Gale Gand, pastry chef, author, restaurateur, and TV personality

Cooking food on your waffle iron is not just a novelty but an innovation that leads to a great end product, all while giving the cook the bonus pleasure of doing something cool, fun, and vaguely nerdy (or giving a reluctant eater―your child, say―a great reason to dig in).

Why waffle?
The Ease! Waffled Bacon and Eggs: First, waffle the bacon—fast, crisp, and no burnt edges—then the eggs, for lacy whites and perfect yolks (thanks, bacon fat).

The Melt! Waffled Macaroni and Cheese: Waffled leftover mac ‘n’ cheese is a decadent grilled cheese sandwich—golden, buttery exterior and soft, cheesy insides.

The Dimples! Spaghetti and Waffled Meatballs: That’s right—cook meatballs in a waffle iron and create dimples where the sauce can pool.

The Cool Factor! Waffled Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies: Break out the waffle iron when it’s time for dessert, and make soft, gooey cookies with grid marks. No oven required.

“Dan Shumski’s genius lies in asking not what his waffler can do for him, but what he can stuff into his waffler, and following that question through to all of its delicious conclusions”

—J.Kenji Lopez-Alt (The Food Lab and seriouseats.com)

Title: Spoiler alert: You'll never look at your waffle iron the same again!
Review: Not just recipes: Daniel Shumski's humble and amusing journey through waffle-land actually makes for a fun little read, so be sure not to skip right from the titles to the ingredients lists and directions.About those recipes, though... While I'll probably never scramble eggs in my waffle iron, I came away with a number of great recipes (you MUST try the brioche - it's SO easy and a delicious component of several items) and inspiration. There's even a section with tips and advice on how to get your own recipes going - what generally works, what doesn't. You can follow Shumski's recipes, or take them to a whole other level. For example, Shumski's idea to make a grilled cheese sandwich in the waffle iron is sheer brilliance by itself, but particularly so if you like to layer it with bacon or tomato. For those of you who do, you know the anguish of trying to flip a loaded sandwich once it's been grilled to perfection on the first side, only to have it all come apart mid flip. In your waffle iron, of course, there's no flipping involved. Problem solved. Bonus: Your sandwiches cook in half the time since both sides cook at once. Double bonus: If you're using a Belgian waffle maker, your sandwich (if you center it, albeit against Shumski's advice - he suggests placing it as far away from the hinge as possible so as to get better leverage for closing it in, but my waffle iron, the Oster CKSTWFBF21, closes very nicely with the sandwich in the middle) will be cut into four sections, perfect for sharing right out of the waffle iron.Sandwiches, of course, are only a small part of Will it Waffle? Shumski will have you preparing any number of dishes, from desserts to main courses (think ravioli, macaroni and cheese, stuffed chicken breasts, tamale pie - SO yummy!), all in half the time it takes to cook the same dishes in a pan or in the oven (hint: chocolate chip cookies). I've tried about ten recipes so far and, although there are probably many I'll never get to, I've already discovered several that have quickly become staples at my house. I hate to name drop, but the chocolate-stuffed French toast is insane. My whole family is in on this, too, as Shumski's book is perfect for seasoned and aspiring waffle iron chefs alike. My kids, including my 14 year-old son, have been having a great time in the kitchen with Will it Waffle? and our new waffle iron. Triple bonus!

Title: if you like waffles, and you're into creativity
Review: I was pleasantly surprised to find that this cookbook isn't simply as quirky as the title might leave you to believe its' general conception might be. It contains quite the variety of creative, uncomplicated, and appetizing recipes. As one might imagine, it opens up the waffle iron to quite a few more meals than breakfast– which it is generally consigned to outside of the occasional chicken and waffles. So, if you like waffles, and you're into creativity, you will likely value this find.

Title: Yes, it WILL waffle - and it's AMAZING!
Review: I bought a waffle iron specifically because the recipes in this cookbook sounded so good (I ended up buying one for my best friend who uses it all the time, too). My favorite time to cook is on a lazy Sunday morning, and I have experimented with at least ten of the recipes in this book. They are foolproof! The Buttermilk Cornmeal Waffles are a favorite, and the savory recipes are delicious, too, especially the Waffled Hash Browns with Rosemary, Griddled Grilled Cheese, and Waffled Onion Rings. I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure I saw a tear in my boyfriend's eye when I served up the Waffled Chocolate-Stuffed French Toast with Whipped Butter. Un-be-liev-able!As a collector of cookbooks, I believe this book has the traits you want in a good cookbook: the recipes come out perfectly as they are written (no tweaking necessary), the instructions are clear, many of the ingredients are those that you would already find in your pantry, and the "voice" of the author is friendly and unpretentious. And for those who haven't made a lot of waffles (like me), the first chapter offers sound advice and suggestions to get you started. I have a friend who is getting married, and she has a waffle iron on her registry. I will be purchasing this book a THIRD time to go with this gift.

Title: Don't expect anything quick and easy from this cookbook!
Review: This cookbook is more than throwing some bread and ham/cheese in a waffle maker - although that recipe is one of the 53. Many of the recipes are time consuming endeavors and are way more work than it's worth. For example: Pressed Potato and Cheese Pierogi sounds like it would take the better part of the afternoon to make. The recipe indicates it will take 2 hours (which is about 1.5 hours more than I want to spend on cooking a meal) but reading through it seems like it will take much longer. The recipes do sound like they would be tasty. Maybe I'm lazy but most of these recipes would be for someone who has hours to spend in the kitchen.

Review: To my astonishment, having been a keen consumer of waffles for over half a decade, this book is a real eye opener. I’ve been very conservative in my approach to use of a waffle iron. Make a batter, drop it in cook and hey presto. But this book takes use of the iron to a different level. Cook bacon? Yes, it’s brilliant. And egg. Left over macaroni cheese…does it waffle well. To my surprise, it’s a delight. A crispy, cheesy snack made in minutes fro leftovers that would have gone out for the birds. The recipes are eclectic and even those bordering on the bizarre work well. Invest in this book if you truly want to expand the potential of the trusty waffle iron. I can’t recommend it enough.
