Title: A different kind of actor's biography
Review: Instead of a breathless chronicle, Devin McKinney offers a poetic, albeit meticulously researched, psychological portrait of a profoundly conflicted individual, whose instinctual mid-western reserve and passion for privacy is offset by his profession, which requires him to exist in the spotlight and glare of public exposure. McKinney's thesis is that this perpetual conflict creates the dynamic tension that infuses all Fonda's performances, each of which merit his sophisticated critical scrutiny, not only as regards themselves but also as they offer reflections and indications of Fonda's inner life and turmoil. I cannot recall reading another actor's life that rewarded me in quite the same way, unless perhaps it was Robert Lewis Taylor's life of W.C. Fields. This book has sent me scurrying back to re-evaluate Fonda's great roles, Young Mr. Lincoln, Tom Joad, Wyat Earp and, latterly, the president in Fail Safe, candidate William Russell in The Best Man, etc.

Title: A Must Read for any Fonda Fan...with Reservation
Review: Mr. McKinney gives us a fair retrospective of Fonda's personal life and film career with some nice inside information only a Hollywood insider/researcher would know. But he also tends to veer off tract from what made Fonda great with way too much background information unrelated to the subject himself. Still, a read well worth pursuing for any Fonda fan.

Review: This author is amazing. He gives the kind of insights a brilliant therapist could divine after years of in depth time with a client. Brings theactor Henry Fonda to life on multiple levels. I would read anything this author writes after finding this book. Fonda was a kind of enigma but this biography fleshes him out in a intriguing and fascinating way.A page turner. Can't put it down.

Title: Sometimes it is just a job!
Review: I enjoyed the first section of the book with its appreciation of the artistry of Young Mr. Lincoln.But I just became tired with the derogatory references to the old drunken has-been (John Ford) and justtaking a role for a pay check (Fonda's roles later in life.) The thin reference to the suicides around Mr Fondawas not sufficient to review a life in such a manner. Mr. Fonda stayed in a very competitive field andworked. I think that is close to a miracle. Sometimes he produced great works of western art with beautifulperformances. But I suspect that he would have told you that sometimes it was just a job. He was not tryingto carry the world on every performance. I understand and appreciate that sentiment. This book does not.Instead of cheering for a long career studded with great performances like Norman Thayer and Tom Joad,the book leaves you disgusted. That is too bad.

Title: Asks More Questions Than It Answers
Review: This is not a terrible book, but it is one that answers few questions yet begs more questions than what one might expect. Here is Henry Fonda who was thought of as the archetypal everyman in some of the greatest films of the 2Oth century. Often portrayed as a voice of reason and a sensitive and approachable man in his film portrayals, the Fonda memorialized here was a remote character who kept wives and children at bay and was cutting and cruel to both family, friends, and associates. This might work in the abstract, but in reality it was not a very satisfying account of the actor life on many levels because it explained nothing.

Title: complete wate of time
Review: This book was not a history of Henry Fonda. It was an over done attempt by an author to be a film critic and PC writer of over the top prose. Could not complete book to boring and to full of self to waste time on.

Title: A perfect take on the man.
Review: This is one of the best and most richly detailed biographies I have ever read. The psychological portrait McKinney creates give depth, understanding and perfectly coincides with what Fonda's own children write about this difficult man. McKinney makes the reader see why Fonda was so successful as an actor while being so removed and cold as a man and father. I loved it.

Review: This is a pretty awesome book in a time where well-written and researched biographies of stars like Fonda are very hard to come by. Very impressed with the writer and his take on Fonda, warts and all. I don't say this often, but I'm looking forward to this author's next work.

Review: Eigentlich kannte ich Henry Fonda bisher nur aus "Bis zum letzten Mann", in einer Rolle, die mich schon als Teenager fasziniert hat. Als ich dann hörte, im wahren Leben wäre er dieser Filmfigur gar nicht so unähnlich gewesen, war meine Neugier erst recht geweckt.Also besorgte ich mir diese Biographie und komme nun gerade voll und ganz auf meine Kosten. Der Autor liefert eine fesselnde Psycho- und Zeitgeistanalyse, die dem Menschen Henry Fonda Respekt zollt und seine fast übermenschliche Stärke ebenso porträtiert wie seine zahlreichen persönlichen Probleme - ohne jemals in schmutzige Sensationskritzelei abzurutschen. Stattdessen bekommt man einen fesselnden, einfühlsamen Blick hinter die Kulissen geboten, der sowohl Fondas Ehen durchleuchtet als auch seine Vaterrolle und sein politisches, berufliches und freundschaftliches Umfeld. Zum Vorschein kommt ein Mann voller Charisma mit tiefen seelischen Abgründen, eisenhart und gleichzeitig hochsensibel, kalt und dennoch voller Lava, eine gehetzte Seele, die ihr Leben lang trotzig auf der Messerschneide der eigenen Verwundbarkeit tanzte und bis zum Ende darum kämpfe, die menschliche Schwäche zu besiegen. Ohne Übersetzungshilfe (haufenweise neuer Vokabeln und Redewendungen auf jeder Seite) entgehen mir die Feinheiten. Zwar verstehe ich grob, worum es geht, flüssig ins Deutsche übertragen könnte ich den Text jedoch nicht.Dennoch, klare Kaufempfehlung für jeden Fan oder alle, die sich einfach für die alte Ära oder hochwertige Porträts berühmter Persönlichkeiten interessieren. Auch hilft es einem zu entscheiden, welche Filme Fondas sich noch anzuschaffen lohnen. Mein nächster wird auf jeden Fall sein: "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod".Die äußere Aufmachung ist zudem sehr schön, das Taschenbuch kommt in schöner matt-angerauter Bindung daher und in schwarz-weiß - bis auf die legendären blauen Augen! Alleine es anzufassen löst ein besonderes Gefühl aus!
