The Second Avenue Deli has been an internationally renowned Gotham landmark for nearly half a century. Over the years, its founder, Abe Lebewohl, provided the best Jewish fare in town, transforming his tiny ten-seat Village eatery into a New York institution.
The Second Avenue Deli Cookbook contains more than 160 of Abe Lebewohl’s recipes, including all of the Deli’s peerless renditions of traditional Jewish dishes: chicken soup with matzo balls, chopped liver, gefilte fish, kasha varnishkes, mushroom barley soup, noodle kugel, potato latkes, blintzes, and many more. These versatile dishes are perfect for any occasion—from holiday dinners to Sunday brunches with friends and family.
The late Abe Lebewohl was a great restaurateur in the showman tradition and a well-known and much-loved New York personality. His famous Deli attracted hundreds of celebrity patrons, many of whom have graciously contributed to this cookbook not only personal reminiscences but also recipes, running the gamut from Morley Safer’s family brisket to Paul Reiser’s formula for the perfect egg cream. A wonderful blend of New York and Jewish history and mouthwatering recipes, The Second Avenue Deli Cookbook provides a delicious taste of nostalgia.

Title: You want deli food at home come on in!!
Review: I bought this book as a result of my nostalgia of the delis I would frequent in Chicago late 1970's. It is exactly what I wanted all the goods. Kreplachs, kugels, matzo balls, potato salad, slaw, on and on. I made the chicken soup delicious! A great cookbook. I am an intermediate type cook..done it for years...did some line cooking and prep jobs 1970's. bought my first cookbook at 21yo Vegetarian Epicure 1. ENOUGH GET THE BOOK!

Title: A great read even if you do not cook. If you do cook- prepare to learn a lot.
Review: Second Avenue Deli's history is great and the food and experience are nearly perfect. That said IF you dare to try to cook this food on your own, this is the only way to start. There is some OLD SCHOOL stuff- i.e. schmaltz, but you can not duplicate these recipes without the old school stuff. Do not give up the first time yours does not come out exactly the same as eating there. We bought a USED book. I could not tell if it had ever even been opened. It is in perfect condition.

Title: From cover to cover; From dish to dish - delish!
Review: I never went to the Second Avenue Deli (being from Chicago originally) but many of my friends here in Florida grew up around it. They are thrilled that I will be recreating some of their favorite dishes from the book. I especially liked all the anecdotes from celebrities who also gave their family recipes. It's a book you just can't put down until the last page is read and then you run out for ingredients and start to cook. Loved it from cover to cover; from dish to dish. Thank you for the insight into an amazing man no one could forget.

Title: 2nd Avenue Deli Recipe book
Review: This book is as much history and food inspired. The recipes made my mouth water just thinking about them and the stories behind the food were bits of history. The recipes are easily followed. The ingredients explained in a straighforward manner. My husband wanted to know the recipe for their coleslaw. We both got even more from the book and enjoyed the stories as much as the food!

Title: Best cookbook ever
Review: This is probably my favourite cookbook now. It has tons of great recipes but also a lot of cool stories to go with many of them. I actually read it cover to cover when I first got it. It's a great choice if you are looking for some excellent kosher recipes or some stories from an excellent New York deli.

Title: Great Recipes & Stories of Abe Lebewohl
Review: As soon as I got the cookbook, " 2nd Ave Deli," I started to read it. Finished it the next day. What a history! Oy! It made me wish that I would have met Abe Lebewohl, such a fine example of an extraordinary person. His life touched so many people....As in many Jewish cookbooks, I love the story behind the recipe. This has that and more! With each recipe, the tradition continues. Each passed down from one person/generation to another. I hope to make them, "family recipes," in my home as well.Mazel tov for putting such an excellent cookbook together.
