The Crack'em Story

How it all began...

In late 2013 Dave Tennant, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran was cooking eggs for his wife who was pregnant with their first child. He cracked the eggs on the side of the pan, which was his typical egg-cracking method, and made a huge mess! Half of the egg fell into the pan and the other half ran outside the pan and onto the stove. Frustrated, Dave thought "there has to be a better way!"

So from that day he started brainstorming different ideas. One afternoon he looked at the spoon rest on the counter top next to the stove and the idea hit him like a ton of bricks - convert the spoon rest into a dual-function egg cracker! This will crack eggs, contain messes, but most importantly - IT WILL PREVENT HIM FROM CLEANING!

Additionally, he could just replace his current spoon rest with the Crack'em to get the dual-functioning product and prevent him from adding another device to the counter top! BOOM - the Crack'em was born!

Designing the Crack'em (4 critical design criteria)

Dave identified four main criteria for designing the Crack'em.

1. Ergonomically Simple - It must make cracking eggs easier, not harder.

2. Aesthetically Designed - It must be something people would like to display in their kitchen.

3. Functionality - It must provide perfect functionality every time it was used.

4. Durability - It must be a single and solid piece so that cleaning would be a breeze.

Title: Egg Cracker and Spoon Rest
Review: I was a poor egg cracker, shell bits in the to-be cooked food every time. I was skeptical of this ex-Marine’s invention, but not any more. It works for me, 99%+ of the time. Hit the egg lengthwise on the Egg Cracker’s molded ridge and a nice little crack is created for opening and dropping all the shell’s content into a bowl or pan. Will work great as a hostess gift.

Title: This is a useful tool that's a bit overpriced.
Review: The first time I used the crack'em I really wasn't sure about the overall usefulness of this product. (In my mind it seemed like an over priced toy). But in the short time I've owned it, I've come to appreciate the utility of this little tool. For years I've cracked my eggs on the countertop or the edge of a butter knife and sure, (at least for me), cracking a dozen eggs has always made a significant mess. Though this product also requires cleaning after each use, I like that most of the mess and she'll bits are localized inside the crack'em.I have found that with a little practice this product really does break shells fairly uniformly. Rather than lay soiled tools directly on the counter top, this prouct also makes a nice rest for dripping spoons, spatulas and pancake ladles.Though not a deal breaker. If I have a single complaint about this product it has to be the price. At twelve dollars, I believe this little dish is significantly over priced for such a small molded item. Even so, I like this product. If my crack'em is damaged or misplaced, yeah...I do believe I would probably buy it again.

Title: It Really Works!!!
Review: I usually crack eggs on a flat surface, which is definitely better than using the side of the pan. Unfortunately, I still had issues with breaking yolks or getting pieces of shell in the eggs that I had to fish out afterwards. This is the gadget I didn't know I needed until I used it baking pies today. It works as advertised, and is so simple and foolproof that I already ordered a 2nd one to add to a kitchen themed Christmas present I'm putting g together. The shell cracks cleanly, and better yet, the inner membrane breaks cleanly, which makes it a breeze to free the eggs unbroken, with no shell pieces to wrangle. So glad I took the plunge!!

Title: Love this little thing!
Review: I bought this for my husband because he eats a lot of eggs. Prior to buying this, every time he would crack an egg it was a mess! Egg on the stove or counter and shells in the egg that did make it into the pan/bowl. This solved both problems! And it’s dishwasher safe!! Love it!!

Review: I was skeptical but thought I'd try it, since I eat 3-4 eggs a day, so I'm always cracking eggs, and fishing broken shells out. I've tried all kinds of instructions for how to crack eggs, on the edge of a bowl, flat against the counter, dropping from a few inches above a counter (works but messy), and this really cracks the shell precisely and without driving bits of shell into the egg, and it contains any bit of dripping egg white.

Review: This purchase was a bit of a gamble, because its price for delivery to Canada is insanely, stupidly expensive. I would say it cost at least a few hundred times the value of the plastic it’s made from.However, if it lasts several years, it will be worth it in terms of mess not being made and yolks not being broken. It also minimizes the amount of bits of shell that get into the eggs.A skilled chef could probably match the performance of this gadget, but that’s something I don’t even aspire to be.It has been said one should avoid kitchen gadgets that are single-purpose, but this is likely an exception.
