“[A] hold-on-to-your-hat, nail-biting story.”—The Washington Post
“Slaughter’s best yet, by far.”—Lee Child

Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda’s motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before, when his father was imprisoned for murder, this was Will’s home. It appears that the case that launched Amanda’s career forty years ago has suddenly come back to life—and it involves the long-held mystery of Will’s birth and parentage. Now these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.

Includes Karin Slaughter’s short story “Snatched” and a preview of the Will Trent novel Unseen

Title: Criminally Good
Review: My expectations rise exponentially when I pick up a book by a best-selling author I haven't read before. And like a lot of readers, I get comfortable with authors I like and often find it difficult to read someone new. But several months ago, I risked a nominal amount of money on SNATCHED, a novella by Karin Slaughter, and I was hooked. However, SNATCHED was so good that my expectations rose even higher when I got one of her latest books, CRIMINAL. It may sound strange coming from a thriller writer, but I'm not big on novels about serial killers or novels that depict depraved violence, especially toward women. So imagine my dismay when CRIMINAL opens with the abduction of a prostitute.More full disclosure: writing books often is really hard work; the last thing I want to do when I read a novel is work. But with CRIMINAL I found myself working to keep up with jumps in the narrative from past to present and back and from one character's POV to another. Worse, for me, was trying to figure out what past and present had to do with each other. But we're talking Karin Slaughter here, so I got over myself and slogged on. And am I glad I did. What seemed disparate, disconnected threads at the beginning slowly twined in patterns that formed a rich, complex tapestry where past and present collide in unexpected and thrilling ways. Slaughter gives us a terrific, conflicted, strong but inwardly sensitive hero in Will Trent (who, I'm happy to learn, is a recurring character in her books), a tough, wise boss in Amanda Wagner, and a whip-smart, sweet and intuitive love interest in Sara Linton.Slaughter's look back at the 1970s through the flashback narratives is fascinating, and not at all revisionist. Though I don't remember thinking at the time that the kinds of gender and race discrimination in Slaughter's 1970s Atlanta took place, I know they did. As a young man freshly out of college in 1974, I spent a couple years in Denver where I worked alongside African Americans in a restaurant kitchen and often went to gay clubs with waitresses on nights off or after work because the music was better than anywhere else, and never considered that blacks, women or gays faced the kind of hatred and bigotry they still face today. In hindsight, I know better. Slaughter has captured it perfectly.CRIMINAL wraps up all the loose ends with a final twist that makes for an incredibly satisfying whole. Karin Slaughter doesn't need more pr or another five-star review, certainly not from me. But not to do so would be, well, CRIMINAL.

Title: Questions Answered
Review: I re-read all 5 previous Will Trent stories prior to receiving Criminal because I wanted to make sure I remembered ALL of the complexities of his character and interactions with the other principal characters. I love ALL of these books and had already read them twice before. Will's an amazingly interesting and complex individual. That said, I did NOT like the back and forth between time periods in this one presented in alternating chapters. I truly enjoyed the "background story", but found it annoying how it was treated with the "present day". I ended up passing all of the back story chapters to read the "current day", then went back to the 1970s. Now I feel I can re-read this one the way it's written and truly enjoy it. The history of the times was really interesting as I am old enough to remember news stories on a lot of it. I love Karin Slaughter's writing, most especially the way she writes complex and emotional scenes with dialog that truly paints a picture. Buy the book, get it out of your local library... it's a good read. I look SO forward to another Will Trent book...he's not free of Angie yet!

Title: You Gotta Pay Attention!
Review: From 1974 to present day, and back and forth-- again and again. Great character development and useful first person narratives. Atlanta, Georgia with its early 70's turbulent racial discrimination combined with the extremely difficult female integration into the Atlanta Police Department's detective division. Add in a tangential relationship between the city's prostitutes and the extremely wealthy upper class. Mix together all of those ingredients and you end up with high-grade moonshine which could explode (or go sour) at any time -- and injure anyone within the bomb radius.Once again I am highly impressed by an author who puts together a credible yet mind-blowing story that keeps you engaged in a fast moving twisted tale all the way to an ending that you didn't (and couldn't) see coming. What more could you ask for as a fan of thrillers? Perhaps a homicide cop's cynical black humor? Or graphic yet informative autopsies? How about disturbing sexism and interracial conflict and distrust? Maybe upper class parents getting far less than what is expected for their children? You get all that and more -- much more.Extremely well written with great calculation and imagination. Not since Tom Wolfe's "A Man In Full" has anyone captured the essence of Atlanta's attempted transition from Deep South morals and values to what it has become today: home of the 1996 Olympics, the busiest airport in America, and the business center of the South. Nother well written novel by Karin Slaughter. Well done!

Title: Will Trent fan
Review: My wife and I are dedicated fans of the Will Trent series on network TV. So - we thought we’d get the Will Trent book series by Karin Slaughter, and we haven’t been disappointed. There are some differences in the TV version and Slaughter’s original version, but the books are more than worth the cost to get them all. Great reads…..

Review: A young woman has gone missing from the local college at a similar time as to when a notorious killer is released from prison on parole. Amanda Wagner is unusually keen to keep Will away from this case with the reasoning soon becoming clear when the young woman’s body is found. She was killed in a similar way to Will’s Mum and the recently released killer was the culprit, who also happens to be Will’s Dad. Can Will keep his personal feelings in check? What does all of this have to do with Amanda?Wow! This book got under my skin from the very start! It’s not told in a linear format. Half the story is set back in the seventies and we see the start of the friendship between Amanda, and Faith’s Mum, Evelyn, as they work to prove themselves in what is still very much a man’s world in the Atlanta Police Department. The men they work alongside are, at best, dismissive of them as fellow Officers and, at worst, outright abusive. The other half of the story is in the present day with Will dealing with his feelings around his Father being released from prison as well as the start of his relationship with Sara Linton and the added complication of the fact he’s still married to Angie.Slaughter handles the split time frames with aplomb. It was always clear where I was in the story and I loved how the two plots entwined. This felt like an important book for the series as far as origin stories go. Considering this is book six, it really does answer a lot of questions that I had.Slaughter builds the tension and despite feeling like I kind of knew where things were going there were still a lot of twists along the way, which I absolutely love. With every book I read I love Will Trent more and this one really just sent that love through the roof.No complaints from me at all.
