Langston Hughes's stories about Jesse B. Semple--first composed for a weekly column in the Chicago Defender and then collected in Simple Speaks His Mind, Simple Takes a Wife, and Simple Stakes a Claim--have been read and loved by hundreds of thousands of readers.

In The Best of Simple, the author picked his favorites from these earlier volumes, stories that not only have proved popular but are now part of a great and growing literary tradition.

Simple might be considered an Everyman for black Americans. Hughes himself wrote: "...these tales are about a great many people--although they are stories about no specific persons as such. But it is impossible to live in Harlem and not know at least a hundred Simples, fifty Joyces, twenty-five Zaritas, and several Cousin Minnies--or reasonable facsimiles thereof."

As Arnold Rampersad has written, Simple is "one of the most memorable and winning characters in the annals of American literature, justly regarded as one of Hughes's most inspired creations."

Title: Wonderful Work!
Review: I have been a Langston Hughes fan since I was about 10 years old. At that age I would go to the public library to listen to him read his poetry via LP record. This book is wonderful; insightful, funny, and resonating with history of the experience/life of Black people in America.

Title: The purcahse was worth the great memories in college days.
Review: I read this book in college for my African American Literature course, more than 25 years ago . Now my daughter attends the same college and had same professor for the African American Literature class. I lost my original copy in a hurricane. I purchased this copy and had my professor sign and write a few lines about me. It was a great excuse to meet him for coffee.

Title: Jess B. Semple is a timeless character
Review: A great read. Very relatable. The dialect got a little old since it wasn’t so much slang or cut short words as it was proper words with continuous subject-verb errors. That’s not been my experience the dialect but Langston pulls it off as the plain speaking straight man to Simple. Hilarious in parts. Timeless themes in the minds of black Americana thrust to the forefront in everyday scenes. Highly recommend.
