Narrated with warmth, humor, exceptional candor and wisdom, The Sum of Our Days is a portrait of a contemporary family, tied together by the love, strong will, and stubborn determination of a beloved matriarch, the indomitable New York Times best-selling author of The House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende.
"An inspiring and thought-provoking work." (Denver Post)
Isabel Allende reconstructs the painful reality of her own life in the wake of the tragic death of her daughter, Paula. Narrated with warmth, humor, exceptional candor, and wisdom, this remarkable memoir is as exuberant and as full of life as its creator.
Allende bares her soul while sharing her thoughts on love, marriage, motherhood, spirituality and religion, infidelity, addiction, and memory - and recounts stories of the wildly eccentric, strong-minded, and eclectic tribe she gathers around her and lovingly embraces as a new kind of family.

Title: belonging
Review: the sum of our days is an experience like no other. firstly, to belong to any family is tricky business, but to belong to , for the brief magical time one is reading this enchanted memoir, this family, or more accurately, as isabel calls her loved ones, this TRIBE, is to experience an open minded, willing, adventurous, and unfailingly faithful family. from the moment one begins this book, a journey of sheer recognizalbe living begins. nothing is held back, yet not a single mean spirited word is written. it is truth, the truth about those who are loved above all others, family and those friends who are chosen family. she writes with such passion, loyalty, color, humor, wit, intelligence, intuition, and i only know, when i finished the book this morning, having eeked it out over the recent two days because i never ever wanted to be parted from this woman's daring, wise, funny, sexy, proud, vulnerable and tender outlook, i cried and cried....it was like losing the day to day connection to a rare and irresistble spirit, as well her cherished loved ones who are painted with such detail and honoring, and felt in a most distant way, in a small way, what it is like like for anyone to lose a most precious loved one. it loss to ever finish an isable allende book, but, perhaps, thisone more than any other. who else is like isabel allende? how can one go on with everyday life when separted from her writing?? she almost ruins everyday living with her beautiful life force and questing strength.it is true grief to ever complete any isable allende book, but this one really packs a wallop of both fullness and missing when it is over, a gaping emtiness as one closes the book, while at the same time giving a new power to the reader, a given promise to one's self to try to live as courageously as does this woman and her entire tribe. in my acting classes, i always say, "who would you most like to share a dinner with?" for me, there is no one comparable to isabel allende. her courage, humor, boldness, her caring, her ability to still love life when life has dealt her the worst bad dream of all, is inspiraiton. this book is beyond exemplary, bolstering, inpsiring, vividly beautiful and utterly , wonderfully, compelling. THE BEST!!!!!!!!

Title: She is passionate in her love of her family
Review: What an interesting autobiography! Isabel Allende is liberal in her beliefs and blends aspects of magical realism into both her fiction and non-fiction. While I don't agree with all of her viewpoints, this book was fascinating and readable. Isabel combines pathos with humor in this most engaging account. She is passionate in her love of her family, referred to here as her "tribe".

Title: One of the Most Enjoyable Books I Have Read This Year
Review: I had not read Ms. Allende's books before because I knew something about her history and felt her writing would only involve South American political issues. How wrong I was. This book is autobiographical and filed with countless stories of humor, tragedy, political intrigue, familial connections, and just wonderful day-to-day experiences. Her triumphs and failures, confidence and insecurities are all laid out for us to share with her. I did not want the book to end and look forward to reading more of her work. The writing is exceptional and well worth the reader's time and interest.

Title: For Diehard Fans
Review: In terms of literature, a bit of a disappointment -- it certainly isn't a candle on "Paula," and I kind of agree with the reviewer who said it seemed hastily written. It does, and there's little of the lyrical language that made "Paula" such a treat. On the other hand, it IS interesting to see more of the whole "tribe" here, and people are depicted more as real people, including Isabel herself. I was shocked and surprised to find that Paula, who came across as almost too saintly in the last book, didn't like children, but it made me like her a lot more as a real person. (Perhaps it was just her youth; I can imagine her, like many woman, wanting a child as she got older.)I'd say this book is best for people who have already read a lot of Allende and are interested in her and her family. I wouldn't start anybody off with this one, and even for diehard fans, the hardcover price may be a bit much. I'd say wait for the paperback or borrow from a library.

Title: The View from Within
Review: I found this book compelling, filled with wisdom, grief, and full of life. I've read and loved many of Allende's books and having an insight into her life was rewarding to me as I knew so very little about her personal challenges. Allende bares her soul as she shares thoughts on family, the tragic loss of her daughter, motherhood, spirituality and religion, infidelity, and addiction. What a qintessential matriarch one views as you read this revealing memoir on the intimacy of her family, or "tribe" as the grouping is called. The characters...related by blood, marriage, or absorption...come into vivid view through her splendid writing.

Title: Light and well-written memoir
Review: It's a memoir written to her deceased daughter Paula about what is going on in her life and her "tribe," as she calls her extended family and friends. Unlike Paula which I found very depressing, this memoir is upbeat and tells engaging stories about her life. Like all her books, it is well-written in colorful language with flights of fancy. I recommend it.

Title: Thank you Isabel Allende...
Review: Thank you Ms. Allende, for sharing your life with us with so much truth, honesty and compassion, not only for the people of your tribe, but also for yourself. There is a lesson in this for your readers- to open our hearts and share the love and kindness within and be kind to ourselves as well... To be able to dissect your life, your fears, pain and loss in your messages to Paula, has been an inspiration for me and I am sure, everyone of your readers who have lost a child too soon... I will reread this dialog and share your words of wisdom over and over again! Thank you again from my heart...

Review: Isabel Allende is an enchantress of words and a mistress of the story. Here is another part of her sporadic autobiography, this time about her life in the United States. The book is presented as a sequel to "Paula", the extraordinary, wrenching account of the long death of her eponymous daughter but is completely different in tone and scope. "The Sum of Our Days" is a comedy of character and of life. If we are to believe her - and I am determined to do so - her life is as rich and as wild as her fiction.Allende's candour about herself and her family is both shocking and delightful. Her relationship with her American husband and with her children and all the rest of her tribe is always totally over-the-top, passionate to the point of madness. Her self-criticism is comically transparent: she describes herself as the mother-in-law from hell and one can believe it, though it makes hell seem so attractive. Like her novels, every word transmits her unending joy - even, paradoxically, during paralysing depression - in being alive, in being a witness to the miracle of humanity, of individuality, of love. But above all, this book is extremely funny and there are moments which made me laugh till I wept.Read this book if you need to feel good, really good, about the world and about people. Surely, right now, we all do.
