Slovenology is part memoir, part essay collection, part travel writing, and part guidebook. It is meant to act as a guide-in-hand while visiting Slovenia, but it can be read just as well from the comfort of your own home to give you a deeper and more colorful sense of what it’s like to live in this remarkable, little-known country.

Slovenology combines an outsider’s perspective with the affection and local knowledge of a long-term resident: an engaging account of living in a singular country, and a punchy guide to traveling in it.

John Stubbs, award-winning literary biographer

I’ve got the key to the city of Cleveland. But everyone keeps saying Slovenia’s great. I want to go.

Bill Murray in an interview with Noah in Esquire Magazine

Charney is hardwired to the bountiful heart and soul of one of Europe’s most unsung and engaging countries.

Title: Outstanding book on Slovenia
Review: The author is obviously well-read and well-traveled. Anyone interested in Slovenia should put this on their must-read list. I bought this book because I am an American with Slovene ancestry, and wanted to learn more about where my family came from, and was not disappointed.

Title: A great insight into a lovely country and it’s customs
Review: I’m an American woman engaged to a Slovenian man. We live in the US but go to Slovenia at least once a year. This is the best book for someone who wants to get to know this jewel of a country! Noah Charney is funny, insightful and honest. I didn’t need the city guides, but they would be perfect for a first time visitor. I highly recommend visiting Slovenia and taking Mr. Charney’s book with you.

Review: Too much about the author, too little about the country. It's omewhat repetitive, think it could have been better edited

Review: Interesting book, but it gets boring when the author just talks about himself. He does it way too often.

Review: I'm hesitating for the review. As a travel book about Slovenien, I would give max 3 stars. This book is more a story telling about the autor's life. This includes his favorit kind of coffee, or little adventures in his life, which are not related to Slovenia. Also, you notice the American origine of the autor : the book has an over-use of "biggest", "nicest", "best" which gives the feeling of reading an advertisement, rather then a factual "story" on Slovenia.But... accepting it is not ALL about Slovenia and reading between the "biggest" and "brightest" American descriptions, I was captured by the book. Slovenia has a lot to offer and the autor's love for Slovenia is more then obvious. It does contain cultural and social knowledge one would not find in a standard travel guide... if I could only buy 1 book to get to know Slovenia, I would not buy this one... if I have plenty of time to visit Slovenia, I would have this book join me on my travel and I would re-read parts of it during my stay: follow the route in Kamnik, try out some of the recommended restaurants or food, and wait for fog to come at Velika Planina..

Review: This is of course a book written anecdotally by a foreigner living in Slovenia. And as a foreigner who spends quite a bit of time here (my partner is Slovene, I have 'family' and friends here), I found the book refreshing in its honesty If somewhat biased at times and rightly so!Why would you buy this oddly named book?Because it does exactly what it claims. I had a laugh many times, agreed with just about everthing and was thoroughly entertained. If your thinking of travelling to Slovenia buy it!If your thinking of living in Slovenia buy it!If your just plain interested, buy it.You won't be disappointed it's both a good read and educational. Thanks Noah, perhaps we will judge schnapps one day.Craig.
