This endearing friendship story about a boy and his dog from a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer gently explores a timeless question: who’s really in charge?

Meet Sid. He’s an ordinary kid. He’s far from perfect. But to Murphy, Sid’s faithful dog, Sid is the whole world. Murphy thinks Sid is the absolute best—and that he’s in charge of everything.

Sid loves Murphy right back, but he can’t help but wonder what Murphy would think if he realized the truth: Sid’s just a kid, and Murphy’s just a dog, and neither one can control the world.

This deceptively simply picture book is the perfect start to a discussion about a subject seldom seen in children’s books—the nonthreatening feel of a world based on fact and reason, and not faith.

Title: Perfect
Review: I LOVED this book. It has a message, but I don't it would be obvious to a small child like my six year old. Regardless, she loves the book as it's short, cute, and about a dog. I think this would be a great book as kind of a joke for a person who does not think there is a big man in the sky controlling everything. A fun fact is that I told my sister about it, she looked up the author and he wrote "Old Dogs are the Best Dogs" too! I had given this book to my vet and my sister. I guess I have a new favorite author!

Title: Fantastic illustrations, thought provoking story
Review: Does the fact that this book is dedicated to me affect my review?? Well, maybe just a little, but it's still the best picture book you can buy this year. The pictures are imaginative and appealing, and the text has several layers of meaning. Every time I read the book, I appreciate another aspect of the art or story. This is a great gift for young and old, and can be appreciated by all.

Title: Great book for starting the conversation with children on religion for non-theists
Review: My kids loved this book. My 7 year old daughter had been teased at school for not believing in God so we looked around for a book to read with her and her younger sister (6) to help them understand our reasoning. It is written for a slightly younger audience, maybe 4-6, but even the older one enjoyed the message, and the rhyming format.

Title: A cute book
Review: My daughter loves this book. We have dogs and she loves dogs. She’s really into this story.I don’t think she thinks as deeply about this story as some adults do. She’s just a little 5-year old. It’s really a cute story and for my 5-year old it’s just a book about a relationship between a boy and his puppy.

Title: fantastic!!!
Review: fantastic book, very well written and the illustrations are perfect. my son loves this book and not a day goes by that he doesn't ask me to read it to him 2 or 3 times. i recommend this book to any one who wants to teach their children that it is okay to not be forced into a belief. it really sets the tone for a great conversation with your child.

Title: Great book with one caveat.
Review: My kids love this book. It provides a great allegory in a way that they can understand. I only have one gripe about the book...the ending. Spoiler alert, in the end the kid decides that it's in the dog's best interest to keep the dog in the dark about the kid not actually being a deity because the dog would be happier.

Title: Don't worship anybody!
Review: Freethinkers don't "Worship" anybody! One of the most facinating ideas convayed easily to a 5 year-old smartass girl!

Title: Wow, take a bow, Weingarten & Shansby
Review: Wonderfully warm and fuzzy and funny boy-loves-dog-who-loves-him-back story. A great show and tell by a couple of guys who've obviously been there, done that. But why is Amazon labeling this an age 4- 8 book? Ridiculous!.(They did the same thing with James Bowen's "My Name is Bob" book about his beloved cat.) Anyone who has ever been a boy who loved a dog should love this. Great choice of a birthday or Christmas gift for any boys you know who have a dog or will soon be getting one.Afterthought: This might make a welcome gift for your veterinarian's waiting room

Review: This is my 2 year old son's favourite book. From the first time he read it he's been requesting it every night at bed time, sometimes more than once. He's almost got it memorized! Beautiful illustrations and a lovely story that gives kids something to ponder.
