Introducing Alaska’s answer to the Pioneer Woman: Two sisters share their remarkable life story as fisherwomen of the Aleutian Islands—plus 50 sustainable seafood recipes that honor the beauty of wild foods.

Share in the remarkable and wild lives of Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton, the Salmon Sisters, who grew up on a homestead in the Aleutians where the family ran a commercial fishing boat in the Alaskan sea. Their book reveals through stories, recipes, and photography this outward-bound lifestyle of natural bounty, the honest work on a boat's deck, and the wholesome food that comes from local waters and land.

Here are creative and simple ways to enjoy wild salmon, halibut, and spot prawns, as well as simple crafts and ideas for exploring the natural world. The sisters are committed to sustaining and celebrating the seafaring community in Alaska, and their business of selling products related to and from the ocean donates a can of wild-caught fish to local food banks for each item purchased.

“To flip through the pages of Emma Teal Laukities’s and Claire Neaton’s new cookbook . . . is to be whisked away on an adventure in the country’s northernmost state.”
—Martha Stewart

Whole Beet Borscht

Lunchtime at our house normally means a pot of soup and a fresh loaf of bread. This whole beet borscht is delightful not only for its rich purple color but also for its leafy greens.

Oysters on the Half Shell

Once, when the stars aligned, the oyster farmers threw us a few sacks of their freshest and we spent the evening shucking oysters on the back deck, eating them straight from the sea and saving the biggest ones to broil with butter, garlic, and a little parsley.

Spicy Seafood Cioppino

Experience the ocean's freshest delicacies with our mom's favorite fish stew. Our mom's recipe pulls in Alaska's seasonal shellfish, halibut, crab, and shrimp. The beautiful thing about it is seafood can be substituted according to seasonal availability.

Title: Good information and good recipes
Review: This isn't "just" a cookbook; although, it has excellent recipes. I bought it because I recently subscribed to a seafood delivery service from Alaska and needed to know how to best prepare each item sent to me. I wasn't expecting a cookbook with so much interesting information beyond how to cook Alaskan seafood. The information about life in Alaska, descriptions of the seafood found there, and how the Salmon sisters live had me reading the entire book in one sitting. Although I don't have access to some of the seafood described (King Crab and Octopus--I wish!), I've learned a great deal about seafood and how to cook it. Oddly enough, one of my favorite recipes, though, isn't a seafood recipe. Their Breakfast Oatmeal Bread is amazing (just be sure to add the salt after you've added the last bit of flour). All in all, I'm really glad I added this book to my cookbook collection.

Title: Wholesome Recipes, Inspiring Stories of Sea and Fishing, Mouth-Watering Photos, and Whimsical Art
Review: Just got my book in! This Salmon Sisters cookbook has really delivered in many areas, even though I have not yet tried a recipe. Perusing through the pages, you will find more than simply healthy recipes made from home-grown, home-harvested, sea-caught foods. You will also find yourself immersed in the customs and lifestyle of the fisher family from Alaska. Through nimble fingers capable of tying fishing knots to writing masterful story-telling narratives to drawing artful renditions of boat life, the authors Emma and Claire make you feel like part of their family growing up on a remote Alaska homestead. You can feel the brisk, cool wind on your face and tousling your hair as you flip from page to page. I look forward to trying the Superfood Salmon Cakes, King Crab Cakes, ALL of the Halibut recipes, the Paella, the Overnight Caramel-Pecan Rolls, and the Blueberry-Apple Dutch Baby to name a few!

Title: So Much More Than a Cookbook
Review: I can honestly say this is the first cookbook I read cover to cover in one sitting. Emma and Claire’s story of having grown up on their family’s remote Alaskan homestead, attended college on the East Coast, and moved back to Alaska to continue their family’s fishing tradition, kept me spellbound. What a rich live these sisters have had - a life anchored by family, place, community, and preparing, cooking and eating what nature (and gardening) provides. I bought this book because I receive Alaskan fish and seafood almost every month through a CFA, and having never lived near an ocean, am often unsure about how to best prepare it. Emma and Claire’s recipes are mostly possible for me, even though I live in a small midwestern city. (The one exception being the smoked salmon which requires a smoking house-but I’ll give it a go in our gas smoker.) I am already making a list in my head of family and friends to give a copy of this special book to-the first being my daughter who attends college in Oregon and would have so loved to have been home-schooled and raised in the wild the way Emma and Claire were.

Title: What an AWESOME cook book!
Review: First off all, I hope you both read this. I'd love to come to AK and eat some of your moms smoked salmon. I'd also love to get some practice cleaning/filleting fish! What a great cookbook. I love ALL of the recipes and I'll be making many of them! 🙂 🙂 Thanks girls.
