She has a secret. Keeping it will mean the difference between life and death.

1941, Poland. Though war rages around her and occupying German forces march steadily onward, 16-year-old Aleksandra has lived her life sheltered from danger.

Until one day, she goes to school – never to return.

Pushed roughly into a truck with other schoolgirls like her, a single ominous word tells her all she needs to know about her fate: Lebensborn.

Lebensborn, the infamous German “voluntary reproduction” program – rumored to involve the abduction of blond-haired, blue-eyed girls and forcing them to bear the children of Nazi soldiers.

But when their convoy is bombed en route to Berlin, Aleksandra and the girls see their chance to escape. In a foreign land, far from home, they know their survival depends on keeping their identities a secret.

Resourceful and determined not to be discovered, Aleksandra takes a job as a nurse in the German city of Dresden. Just as she starts to think she might live to see the end of the war, her carefully crafted secret begins to unravel. Aleksandra knows that if she ever wants to see her home and family again, she will have to risk it all – on her own.

Title: Excellent, Engaging Book!
Review: I hadn’t finished a book in years before I picked this up. I was completely drawn in and engaged from beginning to end; it was hard to put down. Excellent story with great characters, and the “history” part was expertly woven in. The ending was definitely surprising, but like the rest of the book, I found it interesting and satisfying. Overall a nice easy read that kept me interested. I look forward to reading the other books in the series, and have also purchased the Berlin Butterfly series.

Title: Eye opening view of war times, from both sides
Review: In the first few chapters I was about ready to give up reading this book…. Felt there was way to much time/ words spent on traveling in truck, accident and wandering. Then the book literally “took off” and I could barley put it down. I found it very interesting how Ethnic views were interwoven in the lives of the people involved, how the loyalty of the German people to Hitler allowed them to be blind to the atrocities of the war. Overall this was a good read once you get past the slow first few chapters.

Title: Not what I expected
Review: I'm 3/4 of the way through. It's not what I expectedThe book has very little to do with Lebensborn. It's about a truck accident and later working in Dresden. It's not terribly exciting

Review: Aleksandra Vogel is 16 years old when she along with 17 other girls is kidnapped by the German conquerors from Lodz, Poland. They are being transported to Germany because they all have blond hair and blue eyes and unbeknownst to any of them, to take part in the Third Reich’s programme of having children for the so called pure race. What transpires is a story that makes the point that there are no winners in any war and through Aleksandra’s eyes, we see determination and strength of character can overcome all obstacles.

Review: Leah Moyes has a terrific way of bringing WWII from the German perspective to life through young Aleksandra, who was a victim who overcame horrific experiences to become a fierce woman. The author highlights the Nzi perspective through the lenses of different characters - fascinating. Writing in first person is quite difficult, and Moyes does it effortlessly. I truly enjoyed this story.
