Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865.

Abraham Lincoln, byname Honest Abe, the Rail-Splitter, or the Great Emancipator, (born February 12, 1809, near Hodgenville, Kentucky, U.S.—died April 15, 1865, Washington, D.C.), 16th president of the United States (1861–65), who preserved the Union during the American Civil War and brought about the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and is regarded as one of America's greatest heroes due to his role as savior of the Union and emancipator of enslaved people. His rise from humble beginnings to achieving the highest office in the land is a remarkable story. Lincoln was born into poverty in a log cabin and was raised on the frontier primarily in Indiana. He was self-educated and became a lawyer, Whig Party leader, Illinois state legislator, and U.S. Congressman from Illinois. In 1849, he returned to his law practice but became vexed by the opening of additional lands to slavery as a result of the Kansas–Nebraska Act. He reentered politics in 1854, becoming a leader in the new Republican Party, and he reached a national audience in the 1858 debates against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln ran for President in 1860, sweeping the North in victory. Pro-slavery elements in the South equated his success with the North's rejection of their right to practice slavery, and southern states began seceding from the union. To secure its independence, the new Confederate States fired on Fort Sumter, a U.S. fort in the South, and Lincoln called up forces to suppress the rebellion and restore the Union.

Title: Must Read
Review: For anyone who has an interest in history, politics writing, speaking or social development, these “best of” Lincoln speeches and letters provide insights into both the man and his times. A brilliant communicator, the humility and wisdom is evident in each sentence. A great read and one that every American should take the time to digest.

Title: What do you want for free
Review: I'm surely not a Lincoln aficionado, but have great respect for his work and wisdom. This is a mildly interesting collection that I've turned to when I want a short read. I've enjoy his style and was bemused by his letter to a lady friend describing a past relationship with a woman to whom he considered proposing. It's interesting to read the everyday, ordinary musings of such an iconic figure. Plus, I get to come across some of those immortal words that we all quote so oft. I've downloaded the Gettysburg address for free separately.

Title: A Great Addition to Anyone's Library!
Review: "Speeches and Letters of Abraham Lincoln" provides a great spectrum of his words throughout his public career from the 1830s to his death in 1865. This volume is tastefully edited. Reading Lincoln in his own words only elevates his person; there is such a clear, prescient nature to his intelligence and vision for the country that is evident two decades before his serious run for president. Over the years leading to his candidacy and ultimately his election to president this vision became a steely resolve that would act as a connection to his North star and ground his work as commander-in-chief. I was pleased with the Kindle edition and didn't see any major format issues or editing errors that affected normal reading. If you are looking for an easy to read introduction to Abraham Lincoln in his own words this is a great place to start. If you are looking for a more academic approach with analysis and commentary you'll need to keep looking.

Title: Great Companion to the Movie
Review: As an Illinois boy growing up in "Lincoln Land" I acquired a deep interest in our sixteenth president. "Speeches and Letters of Abraham Lincoln", in addition to being a great companion to flesh out the movie, also contains excerpts and entire speeches that I had not before read. I downloaded it into my smart phone and when I am waiting between appointments I bring it up and read more.

Title: Curious Omissions…
Review: To second Nolan Chen's review I noticed that his second inaugural address is abbreviated. It's not a long speech—it's the second shortest presidential inaugural speech in history after Washington's second—yet it is abbreviated. I haven't done an exhaustive study of the whole book (I have the kindle and paperback editions), but this reeks of bias, perhaps of the religious kind. Lincoln's second inaugural address is unique in its explicit citations of the Bible. No other president had been so specific in their acknowledgement of the Creator as was Lincoln here. Regardless, this material is passed over via a tiny ellipsis … and the reader is poorer for it.Also, regarding the paperback, since this seems to be a printing of a Kindle book, the table of contents is virtually useless as it has no page references, but just a list of the speeches; however, the speeches are in chronological order. So yes, the book is just ok because of the omission mentioned here and the TOC. Stick with the free Kindle version IMO. 🙂

Title: Speeches and Letters of Lincoln....the Best!
Review: Anything, and I mean anything written by Abraham Lincoln is worth the read. He was a brilliant man, lawyer, politician, etc. He was not called "Honest Abe" for nothing. He knew the difference between right and wrong and acted upon it. He never spun the truth like so many do today. He had all the qualities of a gentleman and a God-fearing patriot, a loving husband and father, and a great and steadfast friend. I doubt today's colleges could ever bring anyone close to the homespun education Lincoln had. A must read!

Title: This is a terrific book to enjoy over breakfast
Review: This is a terrific book to enjoy over breakfast, a few chapters at a time. The author has a wonderful literary voice and each of the short anecdotes about the amazing man Lincoln is thoroughly entertaining and collectively the hundreds of situations recorded give some insight into what kind of person Lincoln was. His sense of humour, contrasted with his adherence to the principles of justice, suggest that his great reputation was well deserved. Not just for Americans. Ricardo Silverburn, children's author.
