Title: College Admissions Offices are filled with applications from students who have perfect test scores and 4
Review: What a pleasure to read! Dr. Bedor brings extraordinary insight to creating a book that emphasizes the importance of finding your authentic self. College Admissions Offices are filled with applications from students who have perfect test scores and 4.0 GPA's. What makes one student stand out over another? This Guide presents dozens of engaging examples of students who stood out due to their own unique passions or interests -- qualities that gave dimension to their lives and also made them the most highly desired college applicants.    In "Getting IN by Standing OUT", Dr. Bedor encourages students to discover who they are and what they can contribute to the world.  And by being interested in the world, YOU become interesting! This was the message that helped me and my son the most.â¨â¨Although my son is still a few years away from writing his applications, this book inspires me to discover and nurture his interests. Whether it's exploring his unique curiosity about atoms by visiting our local college science lab and engaging in advanced science courses outside of his school, or sharing his passion for playing the piano with guests in a retirement home, Dr. Bedor reminds me of the importance of participating in the world, being involved and giving back.Â

Title: The best eye-opener for anyone with top college dreams!!
Review: This book provided a stellar insight into what admissions is looking for TODAY! As someone who was trapped in the old admissions process of being a Renaissance man who did everything, this book was an eye-opener to make the best of the next few years of high school while acing the MODERN admissions process. Thank you so much, Dr. Bedor, not only for your wonderful insight in your book, but also your inspiration to help me find my authentic self in high school, to help me identify how I am going to help society both now and later, and to see high school as a myriad of opportunities that will mold me into the best and most beneficial person I can be not only for the public, but for myself! Rather than trying to see high school as a subway stop to college, it is now my personal dream-ovator!! Thanks for everything.

Title: A must-read for college application guidance
Review: I don't remember applying for college as being so hair-raising but it has apparently become much more complicated than it was in my time. I have a son who is a high school junior and we are in the midst of this process right now. Having looked at several University admissions guide books, this is the best that we have found to date with the most real-world advice and step-by-step guidance on getting into the school of your choice. Whether it be advice on filling out the application, preparing for placement exams, seeking financial assistance, or learning how to brag artfully, this is a must-read for the would be college applicant. We are getting so much out of this wonderful resource and will continue to refer back to it over the coming months.

Title: Encourages continued buy-in to the hyper competitive view - with a twist
Review: This book is NOT a rejection of the view that students need to focus on what looks good to colleges or that they need to be super busy. It does emphasize focusing on your own passion but it doesn't take the pressure down or actually note that some down time is an important part of life and development. It will be useful to the student/parent who wants to organize the high school years look the best to college admission officers without artifice. The useful takeaway (if you need it) is the anything a young person is passionate about can be made impressive and that you should build on your very own strengths and not worry about whether they are conventional. If you are focused on highly competitive private colleges and you don't know much about college admissions or you want a roadmap this may be a fine book - in fact it may be the one book you need. If instead you believe it's time to lower the level of hysteria about getting into college and let kids be kids, let them start thinking about college during the second half of 11th grade and apply only to a reasonable number of them, then hold out and wait for another book. The competitive schools are opening up to more interesting approaches to admissions; I'm waiting for the book that actually helps kids calm down, message and present what they have done instead of telling them what they have to do.

Review: Getting In by Standing Out is such a great resource book for anyone who is going through the college application process. Dr. Bedor speaks to the hearts and minds of students and parents alike. Her breakdown of what a high school student needs to know about college application, and, through this process, life in general, is especially invaluable. I use this book to help my son, a rising senior, to not only get ready for the upcoming application season, but to examine and utilize the principles Dr. Bedor lays out for our students. We are following her advice and timetable as of now. I would love to report back in a few months how her advice has helped. Highly recommended.

Title: A great guide that's easy to understand.
Review: Dr. Deborah Bedor has a talent for turning an extensive guide into a conversation. The information is easily digestible and entertaining as she weaves stories into her narratives to explain how to get into the college you want. Inside this guide are several instructions on how you, or someone you know, can improve themselves to be the student that colleges want to have. More importantly, she emphasizes on figuring out what your passion is and excelling in it instead on trying to make a resume look good. My cousin has been needing help with looking into college, and I feel this book will help her take a step in the right direction.

Review: This is not helpful at all. I am getting really tired of all these books that don't have much substance. No offence to the author, but this is a waste of time and money
