Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won't give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school's adorable art teacher, but she doesn't want to get serious or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating. Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

Title: I watched because Robin Williams, I stayed because the story was so strong.
Review: Great movie, not a typical Robin Williams, but what was. I think he was the best actor to have play the lead role, all of the actors/actresses play their roles very well, I had no idea that Bob " Bobcat " Goldthwait was such a great director, he did a great job with a single parent movie, turning on it's head in the middle, and change it to something that you wouldn't think of. I think that to large part, specially in the change up, that he exposes a large issue we have in America, where people who have something so terrible happen to them and get the cameras in their eyes, see themselves on TV and in the news, and they have to try to make that minute of fame?, last as long as they can, no matter what they have to do to keep it going, like a shopaholic they just have to get at least one more, no matter what. Bob Goldthwait, great job in every aspect, and Robin Williams, as always turns a movie into much more, he helps turn it into a great story to remember. Watch this and you'll be glad you did, don't and you'll miss a great story told.

Title: My favorite movie with Robin Williams
Review: Those who declare with all confidence that this movie is not a comedy don't know anything about comedy. Comedy isn't all fart jokes or "gotcha" moments for those wacky folks who want to spice up their watercooler banter. If you search comments for trigger warnings at all this movie is not for you. If your sense of humor is almost exclusively sassy sitcom quips then you won't find this funny. If you order a drink at Starbucks with oat milk in it then this movie is probably not for you. It is a treasure for us to remember. We will remember not just the movie but the odd place it has in Williams' life given his tragic end. Like something out of a fable, it has a prophetic subtext I hope we can all appreciate.

Title: Very dark comedy, not for everyone
Review: A story about a single father and his less than ideal son who passed away unexpectedly. Definitely not a feel good story but an interesting story how people can completely change facts and reality so they can feel more comfortable with themselves. It's something that we all do to a certain extent to escape the fact that we are flawed. And yes, we hate everyone who would call out our hypocrisy. It's an excellent movie in the American Beauty kind of way.

Title: Not a Comedy, but a Quality Film
Review: In light of Robin Williams's tragic suicide, this film becomes even more poignant. I confess that I watched this recently only out of nostalgia for Williams, and his passing has allowed me to appreciate the nuance of his performances even more than when he was alive. It's ironic that I would have that kind of reaction to a film that satirizes the celebrity worship of suicide victims, but I think it's necessary to separate the reality of Williams's life from the satirical aspirations of this film. This is one of those scripts that seems like it wants to come to life as an unwatchable, dark, independent comedy that the critics rave about. That's not what happened though. There's actually a lot of heart in this film, and I think it came from Williams. Also, it's interesting to note that Bobcat Goldthwait is the director. He's that quirky comedian from films like "One Crazy Summer," and I think his touch as not a career director helped this film enormously. Sometimes directors get in the way of the material and steal the spotlight, Goldthwait removes himself from the picture, and this is an admirable effort to have in the portfolio.I was also impressed with the performance and portrayal of Kyle by Daryl Sabara (you might remember him as Juni from Spy Kids). In this film he plays Williams's unredeemable son, who accidentally kills himself while performing autoerotic asphyxiation. That might sound sad, but the kid is unbearable, and it's perhaps only after you watch the film that you realize how well written and acted the character of Kyle is. It would have been very difficult to create a believable reprehensible character that nevertheless is capable of retaining the focus of his father's love. They nailed it here, and the end result is heartbreaking and tragic...probably because you see so many kids who walk all over their parents just as Kyle walks all over Williams. A character conceived and portrayed like this is rare in modern film, and I think at least part of that is due to Goldthwait's position as an outsider.Another interesting character is the on again, off again girlfriend played by Alexie Gilmore. At first you think she's just a mousy school teacher excited by a bit of attention, but you soon realize she's manipulative, shallow and evil (all with a squirrel like smile). This is another character that is a very good representation of people you find, unfortunately, in real life. It's surprising to have two such accurate portrayals of common people you encounter every day, who have, to my memory at least, never been major players in major film releases before.Take note that this isn't exactly a comedy. I don't think "hilarious" belongs on the cover. But this film is thought provoking, well-acted, well-written, and it doesn't contain any major flaws. This is an interesting project for Williams to have picked. I'm glad he did.

Title: Waited too long to watch
Review: I didn't watch this movie for years because I thought it was one of those comedies like RV. What a mistake. This is the type of Robin Williams movie I enjoy watching, skirting the edges of black comedy. Great script and acting. OMG the scene on Dr. Dana when he starts laughing was hilarious. Knowing that towards the end the truth was going to come out but it was even funnier seeing the hole was getting deeper.

Title: I wanted to like it, I was ready to like it, I didn't like it.
Review: Love Robin Willliams, when he can escape his usual manic, got to get a laugh, self. He did pretty well here. But the story, even though I like odd ball, and dark stories can be OK...the story just dropped dead about half way through. The guys son kills himself in autoeroticism, and he was an awful kid, the kind that parents keep telling themselves they "should" love, and can't so they get depressed about it. So far good. Then the dad makes his son into a hero for killing himself, not letting anyone know it was while he was...getting off; and everyone feels so remorseful that they give the dad love and attention that he had been sadly lacking. Still good enough story...but then it goes awry. And just stops being the story it was of odd, sad, funny in the way your own dog biting you every time you try to go outside would be...and gets a little manic, trying too hard, and loses most of it's charm. It ends making you feel sorry you watched the thing in the first place.

Review: Bobcat Goldthwait will never shake his reputation as the screamy guy from Police Academy. But what he can, and is doing? Is bolstering this somewhat dubious career with an incredible push forward as the independent cinema scene's golden boy director. His first work, "Shakes the Clown" took a dark look at a drunken child's entertainer. It was hilarious, but very harsh to watch. This film is the second in Bobcat's arsenal, and it is equally as unflinching as it takes a father who has to make some very harsh decisions in order to maintain some dignity in his life. I won't go any farther describing the story, but this is the blackest that dark comedy can achieve. But importantly, it DOES achieve it. It is touching, hilarious, dark and unquestionably brilliant. If you like your movies served up on a plate, you'll need to forgive Mr.Goldthwait. If, however, you're ready to dive into a hard bit of viewing on the promise that the eventual reward will stay with you for a long time? Then please purchase "World's Greatest Dad". It is very unlikely that you'll regret the purchase.

Man sollte diesen Film sehen.Aber natürlich auch wegen der sensationellen schauspielerischen Leistung von Robin Williams.
