Title: A Lyrical and Elegiac Portrait of the Perseverance of the Human Spirit, a Modern Japanese Masterpiece.
Review: Plain and simple, this is a stunningly beautiful film, visually and emotionally. Itâs depiction of WWII-era Japan is so frank and genuine, you can tell they really put in the effort to be as accurate to the time period, locations and customs as possible. The littlest of things most viewers wouldnât even notice are shown in-detail, such as a girl disposing of her used pencil shavings into a little âtrash holeâ in the floorboards of her classroom. The war is certainly a factor in the story, but this is not a âwar film.â Not even an âanti-war film.â The filmâs goal isnât to make you say âoh wow, America sucksâ or "war sure is bad" or any of that (not that it canât elicit those reactions in inevitable discussions). That's not what the film's interested in focusing on. Itâs simply a gentle, personal tale of a woman trying to find her place in the world. The tragedy of war simply helps facilitate that. Similar to A Silent Voice, itâs a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the simple desire we all have to live. Itâs corny, but the old adage âlove triumphs over adversityâ is precisely the theme of the film. Now, does that mean it won't make you cry like a baby? No, it does not. Grab your tissues if you're an emotional mess of a person like I am.Not to mention, lest I forget, the absolutely jaw-dropping art. The film cuts between starkly contrasted images of beauty and tragedy and splices them together in ways that left me speechless with awe. The art is so delicately rendered, it feels like a picturesque painting come to life, while also being so choc-full of detail that the world feels fully lived in, like youâre experiencing the lives of these characters firsthand. The direction on display here is truly commendable (mad props to director Sunao Katabuchi). Honestly, this film rivals Grave of the Firefliesâ impact and power. It easily ranks alongside the other Japanese animated masterpieces of 2016, and if this or A Silent Voice donât at the very least get a nomination for best animated feature at the next Oscars itâll be a great disservice. I certainly wouldnât call this an âOscar-baitâ film, but it should definitely appeal to their sensibilities when choosing more âartsyâ stuff for their nominations. Despite winning the Japanese academy award for best animated feature and seeming to be quite a sleeper hit in general, it still feels like not nearly enough people are talking about or watching this film (at least on the western side). It's easily as emotional and powerful as A Silent Voice or Your Name (if not moreso) and it absolutely deserves your time. Iâm sorry, I really canât think of any issues I had with this film. Itâs a 10/10

Title: This film will break your heart, you will cry, but you don't want to miss it.
Review: A heartbreaker and insta-classic. "In This Corner of the World" is a historical fiction that follows Suzu, as she enters adulthood during WWII in wartime Japan. Much of the story takes place in Kure, about 10 miles outside of Hiroshima, and the last quarter covers the Bombing of Kure during July 1945, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945, and the aftermath. This story is similar to "Grave of the Fireflies" in that they are both films that spotlight the horrors of war but have far deeper meanings. The message of Fireflies was about the need for parental figures and support while growing up. Meanwhile Corner is as much a story about the importance of family, daily life during the war, and most importantly overcoming adversity even when things seem at their bleakest."In This Corner of the World" is beautifully animated using an oil-based, colored pencil, and sometimes watercolor aesthetic. The protagonist is also an artist and so the film will deliberately change styles to reflect the way she sees the world. There is one scene, with let's just say a delayed reaction, where the change is so abstract and dramatic that it leaves a lasting impact on the viewer; so much so that I started tearing up just thinking about it. The character design is deceptive. Our heroine is 18 years old when the story kicks in but you'd never know it unless they told you. There are several special features included on the disc that are worth a watch. Translated interviews with the director and producer, a cite tour of Hiroshima and Kure, and trailers. I have watched the film subbed and dubbed; I can confirm the English dub is actually good. We've entered into a new age of anime films. With movies like "Your Name", "A Silent Voice", and "In This Corner of the World"; I am excited to see what the future holds.

Title: A window into world that deserves to be remembered...
Review: This film...left me short of words.Sometimes, you get a glimpse of another world, another place, another time, that you leaves you struggling to understand its depth. Each time you seem to grasp the nuances of the culture and the characters, the next scene leaves you out of depth again. Such was the case with this film. As I watched the main character, Suzu, struggle to find her place in a new family and in a strange town, I yearned to fully grasp the world in which they lived. A world which was so beautiful filled with people who understood how to live, but that caused such wanton destruction and death. That is the paradox of this film, one it doesn't shy away from. The people who care so much for each other and for life enthusiastically support a government that causes suffering abroad. But what goes around, comes around, and the people who end up suffering the most are those who seem to be the most innocent. This window into wartime Japan reminds us that oftentimes, during wartime, everyone suffers. The tides of war leave no one untouched. This review is spoiler free and so I won't hit on plot points. I will merely suggest the reason this film needs to be seen. It will leave you happy at times, sad at others, and ultimately, will leave you with a bittersweet taste. It offers, however, a chance to understand a people at war, and a culture that largely disappeared in subsequent generations. Beautifully made, this film is a work of art.

Review: The story is touching. It is a perfect mix of sweetness and bitterness, like life is sometimes. It shows a special perspective of the bomb of Hiroshima. The images are delicate and very impressive. The product arrived on time and in perfect condition. Great and complete experience.
