Title: Collection of terrific essays
Review: Any history buff or Abe Lincoln fan should get this book right away. (Anyone who sees my reviews on Amazon will know I do not lavish praise cheaply). All of the essays (eleven total)are well-written and thought-provoking. Everything, from the Republicans' refusal to compromise on slavery in 1860 to the depths of Lincoln's actual anti-slavery feelings, is explored. Even the essay on the Lincolns' marriage, which I was going to skip, was well worth reading. James McPherson's essay, as will not surprise anyone who has read Battle Cry of Freedom, is excellent. (If you haven't read it, what are you waiting for?) The only dilemma I had was in deciding which essay was the best. I'll leave that to the reader
