“I have read no book that more carefully, thoroughly, and tenderly displays Christ’s heart.”
—Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out
Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is “gentle and lowly in heart.” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers
Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take us into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

“Jesus does not love like us. We love until we are betrayed. Jesus continued to the cross despite betrayal. We love until we are forsaken. Jesus loved through forsakenness. We love up to a limit. Jesus loves to the end.”
—Dane C. Ortlund, author, Gentle and Lowly

Title: A wonderful book dedicated to the heart of Jesus
Review: Wow, what an amazing book dedicated to the heart of Jesus. I read this throughout the month of June and each time I picked it up, I grew in faith in the Lord. I was encouraged, reminded, comforted and sometimes convicted.Make sure you check out the YouTube Live Shows on Krista's Channel, BooksAndJams for more in depth discussions! I am so thankful to have joined some of the live show discussions with her and other lovely ladies this month. My channel name is BookLoverAmanda. This book dives deep into the heart of Christ and how he views us. He is gentle and lowly in heart. This book beautifully explains this in each chapter and provides some great historical background from the Puritans. What I was reminded of:⢠We often minimize our sin, we donât have a good understanding of it because we have a sinful nature. God shows us His ultimate grace and Christâs heart is drawn to us. Romans 5:20 âWhere sin increased, Grace abounded all the more.â⢠Christ intercedes for us and he will never cast out.⢠He is an advocate for us. I resonated with this so much because my son has Autism and I have been struggling this past year and found myself sitting in my feelings many days. I can remember specifically one week where I had been so overwhelmed and not praying as I should. I cried out to the Lord one night, praying for my son to have good days at school and to help him grow in his speech and skills. The very next day, he had the best day he had in weeks and the chapter on Jesus being our advocate reminded me that just like I am advocating for my son in his struggles, with therapy and preschool, Jesus is advocating for me, my husband and my son all along the journey.⢠Jesus is our friend, he is near to us and we should draw near to him.⢠Jesus understands our feelings and has compassion for us. In our grief, he is grieved. He sees what we are going through and is not surprised by anything we are going through or feeling.⢠We donât have to do anything (works) to earn his love. I love the comparison of the son trying to do everything to secure his place in the family when he doesnât have to do anything special â the same for us in our relationship with Jesus. Itâs settled and irreversible.⢠While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He loves me in my mess â my crazy, busy, working mom life mess. I canât be everything for everybody and thatâs ok. This chapter reminded me that throughout my mess â he is always sustaining me and loving me and listening.Overall, this is a perfect book to help us understand Jesus and His heart for us.

Title: love this book
Review: "Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers" is an excellent read for those who struggle with the biblical theology that we are called to be like Christ in all things. The reminder of the scripture, "I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37, KJV), profoundly impacted me. Growing up, I had a very distant, almost non-existent, relationship with my earthly father. However, this book reinforces the promise that God will not cast us away, no matter how awful or sinful we are. I keep this book on my desk at work, even in a very secular environment, and have passed it along to students in hopes that they might glean as much, if not more, from it than I have. Thank you for this exposition.

Review: In order to answer the question of "What is Jesus' heart like?", Dane Ortlund managed to weave together all the best and most endearing puritan reflections, all the while backing it up with a constant recourse to Scripture through careful, thorough exegesis. I am not a big reader of devotional books, I would generally go to Scripture itself, but this one completely surpassed my expectations and touched my heart like few others did, because it is simply Scripture and puritan theology distilled into an easy to read book, focused on knowing the heart of our Saviour and written in contemporary language. Easily my favourite devotional book.

Review: As the author says in the Introduction, this is a book for normal Christians, that is, those who are âthe discouraged, the frustrated, the weary, the disenchanted, the cynical, the empty. Those running on fumes.âThis one is surely to uplift and encourage you in your walk with Christ. Highly recommended.
