“A perceptive and practical book about why our calendars so rarely reflect our priorities and what we can do to regain control.” (Adam Grant)

“Carey’s book will help you reorganize your life. And then you can share a copy with someone you care about.” (Seth Godin)

You deserve to stop living at an unsustainable pace. An influential podcaster and thought leader shows you how.

Overwhelmed. Overcommitted. Overworked. That’s the false script an inordinate number of people adopt to be successful. Does this sound familiar:

Slammed is normal. Distractions are everywhere. Life gets reduced to going through the motions.

Tired of living that way? At Your Best gives you the strategies you need to win at work and at home by living in a way today that will help you thrive tomorrow.

Influential podcast host and thought leader Carey Nieuwhof understands the challenges of constant pressure. After a season of burnout almost took him out, he discovered how to get time, energy, and priorities working in his favor. This approach freed up more than one thousand productive hours a year for him and can do the same for you.

At Your Best will help you:

Replace chronic exhaustion with deep productivity Break the pattern of overpromising and never accomplishing enough Clarify what matters most by restructuring your day Master the art of saying no, without losing friends or influence Discover why vacations and sabbaticals don’t really solve your problems Develop a personalized plan to recapture each day so you can break free from the trap of endless to-dos

Start thriving at work and at home as you discover how to be at your best.

Title: Brilliant Idea for Productivity; Spoke to me Personally in countless sections.
Review: I like Nieuwhof (sp) and his writing and podcasts. He can be a little to 'how to grow your church to 1 billion' for me, but this book (and his previous about burnout) was honestly perfect for where I'm at in life.I'm a 38 year old husband, dad, and pastor (while also trying to be an individual and a friend). The constant pressure for the first three can be nauseating. Be the best, sacrificial, hard-working, loving husband. Be a patient, present, engaged, funny, firm, loving dad. Crush it at work, write books, publish podcasts, grow your church. The book is all about finding the best time of day that you work (everyone's going to be different; mine I think is between 8am-12pm). Then identifying what the most important work is for your job. Some of the ideas resonate with Deep Work by Cal Newport. The line that brought me to tears (literally) was on p. 103 "Challenge 3: I've got young kids or a difficult family situation." As a dad of three kids (9, 7 and 4), this was solid. He says this: "While there are some successful authors, podcasters, and speakers who have young kids at home... it might not be realistic or wise for you to set enormous goals for yourself if your free time is regularly spoken for. That's okay -- and here's the clutch line -- Having a great family life and a strong marriage is an excellent goal."He goes on a bit more, but then concludes with this (which gives me chills reading again): "If your situation is young kids or teenagers who need your love and attention, adjust your expectations and play the long game. It always pays off."Thanks Carey and everyone who helped with content, research and writing.

Title: Author means well, but this book isn’t for everyone
Review: The author’s heart is clearly in the right place. He wants to write a book that helps people, and most people probably can get some benefit from some of the ideas in this book. But he comes from a position of being the guy in charge of things, and a lot of his system isn’t practical to implement when you don’t get to set your schedule, or (more importantly) pick your work tasks and priorities. He has a chapter to try to address those concerns, but it contains things like this:“Do your most important work while your energy is high, and shift all the low-importance work to the Red Zone. If that means you have to come in early as a morning person or stay late if you’re a night owl, most bosses don’t object to people getting in early or staying late.”Clearly the writing of someone who doesn’t have a boss - sure, most bosses won’t object if staying late or leaving early means you're working extra hours (and also there for the entirety of the regular work day). But quite a few bosses *will* object if you want to start early and then leave by 3 PM or stay late but not start until 11 AM.There’s also a section where he has you say out loud things like “I chose not to exercise” or “I didn’t make the time for that” in the name of being honest with yourself instead of saying something like “I didn’t have the time”. It misses the fact that for many people, the choices available to choose from are heavily influenced by factors beyond their control. If you “chose not to exercise” because taking care of a family member took priority, no amount of being brutally honest with yourself about that is going to make that time available for exercise. Many of the ideas in the book are good, and can be adapted and applied in your life in a more limited fashion. But the way it’s presented in the book like it’s a given that everyone has the ability to do all the things he suggests is kind of painful if you’re in a situation where that’s not true. For someone who is stressed to the breaking point and has far less freedom of choice in their life than the author, not being able to live up to the recommendations of this book might just lead to feeling worse.I’m still giving this four stars because there are some good ideas in it and it’s clear the author does genuinely want to help people. But if you’re not a “leader” or self-employed, take it with a grain of salt, don’t judge yourself for not being able to do everything the book recommends. As an alternative for people who couldn’t connect with this book, I would recommend “No is a beautiful word”. It can help you take a gentler look at what’s using your time vs. what really matters in life. You may not always have the power to say yes or no to things, but you can figure out what your yes things and your no things are and make good decisions whenever you do have the option to choose (and also learn some strategies for finding ways to use your no even when you’re not the person in charge). It’s also an easier approach for people who have trouble following schedules. If you’re drowning and “At Your Best” didn’t click for you, give “No is a Beautiful Word” a try, the latter book almost made me cry with relief at how well its gentle and encouraging message resonated with my life.

Title: Delivers what the title says
Review: I found out about this book through Carey's leadership resources. While I had read a fair number of books on productivity in the past (7 Habits, GTD), the idea of managing priorities and energy was new to me. I have applied some of the main ideas in this book for the past two months and it has really, really made a difference for me. Highly recommended.

Title: VERY surprised how good this book is!
Review: I've followed Carey on his blog/emails, and podcast for years, but this book didn't really strike me as interesting - until I just changed jobs last week. And man, let me tell you, he nailed it! His writing and ideas were clear, concise, but oh so relevant to my own personal situation. It could not have come at a more serendipitous time for me, and I'm grateful for this work. I think his own personal connection to the subject matter really gave this material the teeth and bite that drove home the principles and realities many of us are currently facing. Also, some pretty funny parts as well that added levity to an otherwise fairly intense topic. I will be referencing this book steadily over the course of the next year as I revamp my life, time, calendar, and schedule. BONUS* I usually get the Audible versions to go along with my books to facilitate more efficacious connection and consumption of the material - Carey's performance on the Audible version was great as well, so I highly recommend either or both for added effect! Thanks, Carey!

Review: I am younger leader in his mid-thirties who is trying my best to navigate work, life, family, marriage etc… all in the shadow of post Covid-19 world. This book was a God-send for me. I’ve read tons of books and articles on self care, leadership, and time-management. And to be honest, I usually find those sorts of books leaving me feeling like I’m always going to fall short. NOT THIS BOOK! Nieuwhof writes from the place of vulnerability of his own burn out and struggle to escape the stress cycle. Nieuwhof helpfully pays attention to our limitations in a way that helps the reader hardest the gifts they have. If you’re looking for a book that will help you lead and work in your humanity— and not apart from it—- then this is the book.

Review: When we say we ought learn from our mistakes and then go to say the wise learn from others, well it takes generous people to share their mistakes and more importantly how they have grown and corrected them. That is this book. Mismanaging our time, energy, passions and resources and sleeping in the bed of those consequences is common to just about everyone. So we all stand to learn (and I have learned and begun implementing) what this book says. The advice here is written with humility and a teaching heart that says, "let's learn from my mistakes".Very good, very good value. Thank you for writing it.

Review: I love what Carey puts out - whether podcasts, blogs, or in this case book. I have worked in leadership positions for many years but currently have begun homeschooling my children (twins 8 and 10 year old). As I began unpacking this book for myself, I realized the value of my kids learning these principles. I tailored the material for them and had them do the worksheets provided. We are actually restructuring our school day based on our green zones. Game changer! I love that I am giving my kids skills that will set them up for success as adults. Carey is an amazing communicator whose curiosity unlocks learning opportunities in unexpected places. Highly recommend this book and his podcast!
