Title: Outstanding read
Review: This book is as relevant today as when it was written. The plight of the Jews and the creation of the State of Israel is both fascinating and entertaining. This is a book of tragedy, redemption, and hope. I encourage anyone to read it, regardless of religious background. You will also find excellent character development. Bring tissues.

Title: The Devine Mystery--Life through Death
Review: Having read Leon Iris's earlier work on the sufferings of the Holocaust I was lead to this sequel; I was not disappointed. I found the book impossible to put down. It was a wonderful experience and like his previous work, it was very true to life; descriptions of land and the people were exceptional, every new life and every death wove an unforgettable history of the painful history of the nation Israel. Highly recommended.

Title: Powerful drama! But the book is better.
Review: EXODUS is an extremely powerful 1960 film about the founding of Israel based on the sweeping novel of the same name by Leon Uris. The movie was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The screen play was written by Dalton Trumbo. It starred an outstanding cast lead by Paul Newman. The movie focuses narrowly on the last months of the British mandate for Palestine and is told from the point of view of Jewish freedom fighters.Preminger knew how to tell a dramatic story effectively, and Newman was never better than as the charismatic and decisive Haganah commander Ari Ben Canaan. In the course of the movie, Ben Canaan organizes three operations -- each an exodus. He springs more than 600 Jews from a British internment camp in Cyrus and gets them to Israel. He leads a force of Haganah and Irgun fighters in an attack on the British prison in Acre to break out a large number of Jewish prisoners. Finally, Ben Canaan organizes and leads a mass evacuation of children from a threatened kibbutz. This movie makes the point that highly motivated persons can achieve a lot. As is often the case the movie Exodus is a greatly simplified telling of a complex, nuanced novel. The novel gives the back stories of the main characters. It also gives a thumbnail sketch of the founding of Zionism, of Jewish settlement in Palestine. It explains great power ambitions in the Middle East and British policies in the Palestine Mandate. Most importantly, through the telling of the character's back stories, the history of Jewish settlement in Palestine, and the struggle for independence, the novel sheds light on the roots of contemporary Israeli politics -- or maybe a better way to say it would be -- political confilct.Naturally, the novel and movie are the subjects of a lengthy articles in Wikipedia.

Title: So many tears!
Review: Even though I knew the history of the Jewish People, this personalized telling with all of the colorful characters was even more heart wrenching and beautiful. There was even beauty in the pain because the pain, with their faith, molded the farmers, soldiers and leaders of a most remarkable homeland, Israel. This is a timeless story written by a talented author.

Title: Unquestionably THE Best Book on the 1948 reestablishment of Israel!
Review: I have always had an interest in Jewish history. This stems from my faith, as Christianity owes its start to Judiasm. In addition, I have often wondered why the Jews have been persecuted for millenia, and how, depsite the tremendous odds, they were able to come together as a nation, after over 2,000 years of dispersion. To me, the reestablishment of Israel is a modern-day miracle, and I desperately wanted to know how such a "miracle" occured. Who were the key people? What historical events precipitated Israel becoming a nation once again?I have found my answers in Leon Uris' book, "Exodus". "Exodus" is a historical-fiction book that explains how the nation of Israel came together in 1948, told through the individual lives of Jewish immigrants who risked their lives to reach Palestine in the years immediately after World War 2 and before May 15, 1948. Uris has created such realistic vibrant characters with such real stories, it is akin to being a witness of history as it happens. Uris introduces his key characters and then in the course of the story, recalls each character's past, and the unique events which led the person to their inevitable course to Palestine and Israel. (Note: As my memory is not real keen, I kept a listing of the main characters in the front cover of the book, as so many key characters are intoduced in the first 100 pages. My notes were helpful in remembering key facts about each character as I progressed in the book).Beginning in a British-run refugee concentration camp for Jewish exiles in 1946 on the island of Cypress, Uris unfolds his intricate story of how daring and bold key individuals forced the oppressive hand of Great Britian to finally exit their occupation of Palestine, and how the nation of Israel was born. This book answered my questions on how, against all odds, Israel was able to revive, and then survive as a nation. (The day after she declared herself a nation, Israel was attacked on all sides by her Arab enemies - yet, without a standing army, still was victorious!).True history is so much more interesting than pure fiction, and in this book, Uris combines the best of both, producing perhaps THE seminal work of his life. "Exodus" answered all my questions about the establishment of Israel and gave me a sense of history I could never glean from a history book. His characters and the history lessons learned with forever be with me.As Israel is embroilled in a 50-year struggle for its own nationality, and all of history seems to revolve around this tiny country, it behooves the student of history and those who simply want to understand our world today, how a ragtag people, persecuted to near extinction under Hitler's concentration camps, resurrected themselves into the nation that is now Israel. Leon Uris's book, "Exodus", is an excellent starting point for the inquisitive reader to begin learing about the modern-day miracle, which is Israel. For those who seek deeper understanding of the Jewish nation, I also recommend the following resources: The Source: A Novel, and Against All Odds - Israel Survives: The Complete First Season.5 Stars for Leon Uris and "Exodus"!!!Jim Koenig

Title: Review of Exodus
Review: A great read!! one of Urisâ best if not the best. Based on fact it takes the reader thru the birth of a nation - Israel and difficulties encountered in making that historic event happen. I suggest reading The Hope and The Glory by Herman Wouk after reading Exodus. Those novels continue Israelâs struggles to remain a nation in a very unfriendly neighborhood.

Review: As I read this, a war rages between the Arab and Jewish worlds in the Middle East. This book has been a timely reminder of how deeply, fiercely committed the Jews are to their right to self-determination in their historic homeland and I am in awe of the determination, skill, ingenuity and complete and utter dedication to the cause that they have shown over the past century of turmoil. As an atheist, I have no commitment to their cause but their ability to put themselves as a race before anything and anyone else is hugely inspirational. What is happening today in Gaza is deeply, monstrously tragic but0 I now have a much better understanding of why it has to be the way. The whole region is hardwired for endless conflict, pain and misery. A desperately tragic situation for everyone.

Review: Uno stupendo racconto epico sulla travagliata storia degli Ebrei e la fondazione dello Stato d'Israele. Certo, un po' di parte, vista l'origine ebraica di Uris, ma pur sempre una narrazione stupenda. Vale veramente!!
