A gripping novel based on astonishing true events...

It is the summer of 1941, and two young men from Chicago embark on an epic journey. First, they road trip down to Mexico, where they spend a few idle months before hopping a freighter to Japan. From there, they sign on as merchant seamen for a three-month voyage to Europe, landing in occupied France on the very day that Nazi Germany declares war on the United States. Their adventure has suddenly taken a dark turn.

Wolfgang Wergin and Herbie Haupt are American citizens, though German by birth. Both have lived in America since the age of five, yet now they are faced with a harrowing choice. They can join a Nazi sabotage mission heading to the United States or be drafted into the German army and sent to the Russian front. One chooses the first option, and one the second, but will either survive?

While this fragment of history is mostly forgotten today, the episode became one of the most sensational news stories of its time, garnering intense national interest. "Enemies: A War Story" is a fictionalized version of this true story, sticking as close to the facts as possible.

This is a novel that raises challenging questions about the meanings of patriotism, justice, and American morality during difficult times. More than anything, though, it is simply a story that yearns to be told.

Title: Fascinating depiction
Review: Well written and documented. The story is tragic in how we jump to conclusions about people. Human nature I suppose. But the story keeps you interested and the fictional parts well thought out.

Title: Very well done.
Review: This book addresses the experiences of a number of people in WW II and their individual stories are intermixed as their ives proceed through the same relevant time period. As a result, I sometimes found it diffin the end, it was well worth the effort, however.icult to recall the previous histories of these people as the book progressed.

Title: Good read!!
Review: The book caught my attention from the start. It follows the misguided and tragic journey of two young men. Anyone interested in a rather unknown episode of World War 2 should give this book a try.

Title: Powerful Narrative of Headline Characters from WWII
Review: I enjoyed all aspects of this book which has 87 chapters -- excluding the Foreword, Afterword and Note on Sources. I appreciate the manner in which the chapters are broken down and the narratives provided. This book follows many key players but I found them easy to track. The author’s attention to detail is conscientious and precise, but not overly tedious. The concluding chapter on sources and verification of details is much appreciated. I have read many books on WW II, but nothing like this one. It is one of the best. The author’s perspective is, in my view, “spot on” in terms of humanizing the subjects and consistent with what I have learned about J. Edgar Hoover and the events of time period. As an attorney, I especially appreciated the testimonial presentations from actual transcripts and note that these aspects of the book are appropriately summarized or edited down, not overwhelming. I am not quite sure how this book came to my attention, but I am delighted to have read it and to have it in my library.

Title: 3.5* How do the Nazis give young adult males cash? And expect betrayal of the males' homeland
Review: If this wasn't based on actual 3vents, I would list this as a comedy. The fledgling FBI with JEdgar's control issues & paranoia really makes this a historical oddity but very good. This is great story telling, because no one could make this up. Hope to see it as a mini series.Recommend for any reader interested in WWII or how everyone ignored the horror in Europe. This is an education.Well done

Title: W W2 and young boys adventure
Review: This story is more for less true story but I found a lot of it was hard to believe and very stressful. I was glad when the end of the story came.

Review: It was a v ety interesting book, with a varied amount of characters as within.I loved Brrtie he had a roughish personality, and the majority of the book he festured him as such. Dasch was a man of mixed feelings and I think would have sold his soul. A grest book well done to the author

Review: The writer highlights a little know true story which should really be revisited by USA. I cannot believe that there has been no moves to grant the victims pardons. Did you know that 2 German submarines landed 2 teams of Germans in the USA, NJ and Florida in the early years of WWII with the goal to cause sabotage of the US war efforts ? They were two small teams and all had previously lived in the USA. They had wanted to leave Germany because of the deplorable abuses by the Hitler regime. The volunteered for the mission, almost certainly, to get to the USA. When they got there it was obvious they didn't have the stomach to carry out the mission. It might be assumed all would have handed themselves in but were unsure of each other and the system in the USA. All but 2 were executed as spies. It is a good read and well written. The writer may have overcooked the fictional side of the characters lives. The book could have been shorter and more focused on the deplorable outcome.
