Title: Unmatched Quality and A Brilliance Not Heard On Most Remastered Music
Review: Anyone who has listened to John Lennon's recordings over the years will INSTANTLY notice how much the sound quality of these "Ultimate Mixes" are truly improved. The music seems to 'float' in the air, resonating with sounds and instrumentation that was buried in previous mixes. The bass and bottom end are especially noticeable and John's voice is centered and exceptionally clear. I have listened to previous editions of these recordings for years, and still I can hear sounds that I have never noticed before. To say that these remixed songs are "Ultimate" is NOT an overstatement. I can't imagine that the sound quality could possibly be improved more than these songs are. To hear these in better sound quality you'll need a time machine and travel back to the studio on the day they were recorded. And the song selection is fantastic. While not truly a 'best of' compilation, these are songs that impacted John the most, as selected by Yoko, and while many of them are 'hit' songs, there is a lot of material that long time listeners of John's albums have come to know and love that were neither singles or hit songs, but are great tunes none-the-less.2 CD's, 36 total songs, encompassing John Lennon's entire solo career. Some songs John wrote while he was still a member of the Beatles (though not recorded by the group) and some of these tracks didn't see the light of day until well after John's untimely death and tracks from all eras of John solo career in between make up this incredible collection.Long time fans of John's will certainly enjoy the upgraded sound quality and song selection, but even those new to listening to John are certain to be captivated by the music he recorded. And lastly, a tip of the hat to "Bridge Records of Ireland", the seller of this CD. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to select a CD sold from so far away, but I salute them for their customer service, quality packaging and speedy delivery. I was notified that they had received my order, when it was shipped and it even managed to beat their estimated delivery date by more than a week, all at a very nice price. I would not hesitate to order from them again.

Title: A comprehensive track list
Review: If you are a fan of the John Lennon song book, these two discs provide "The Greatest of the Greatest..." I have many of these tracks on other compilations, but having them in one place and freshly mixed completes my collection. John was no saint, brimming with anger and resentments. The raw power of his delivery and the artistic quality of his songwriting are like a shot of adrenaline. He was taken from us much too soon. R.I.P.

Title: Great Compilation
Review: This is a very nice 2 CD compilation of Lennon's best with the best-to-date remastering. It will be superseded someday, like when you can buy a home version of multi-track mixing console and be your own sound engineer. Long live stereo!

Title: The Bass is Back
Review: Clean remixes that do not betray the original recordings. Klaus Voorman fans will be particularly pleased how good he sounds on these recordings.

Title: Listening to the music, not the sound.
Review: I almost didn't buy this. I have all of the later remasters of his albums, and am growing weary of rebuying so many Beatles / post Beatles CDs. But I took the plunge - can't see Yoko having a yard sale out in front of the Dakota to keep the lights on. At first listen, I was disappointed. It sounded a bit dead. But as I continued to listen, I caught on. The new remastering is different that it used to be. Up until recently, remastered meant bolder and louder. The new remasters aren't like that. They're mixed quieter. All of the elements in the recording are more defined, clearer, but they don't scream at you. Think the latest remastering of the white album. Still I have to admit I really used to enjoy the beginning of "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," coming in suddenly and forcefully, and causing me to spring to my feet to dance. And I can't dance. A second listen to the disc was much more satisfying, having made the adjustments and now being able to appreciate the fact that I am now listening to the music, not the sound. John's voice sounds so much better. It had previously always thought he sounded thin and whiney on "Mind Games" and "#9 Dream." Now they sound fuller and gives me more appreciation for the voice I idolised in the Beatles. Many of the tracks have the instruments sounding fuller as well. And something else I'm seeing a lot now, the reduction or removal of the tinny echo on the vocals. I'm sure all of us will bemoan the absence of songs we think belong there, but they can't please everybody. Starting out not caring for this collection, I wound up giving it a 5-star rating.

Title: John's voice is front and center (usually great, but not always)
Review: This is a very good compilation, but not the greatest. To me, the best Lennon compilation is the four-disc box set (released circa 1998) with the discs that are titled based on periods in John's life, e.g., "The Lost Weekend"). That set also has excellent liner notes, something that is also missing from this two-disc "Essential Mixes" collection. But speaking of the "Essential Mixes": again, it's very good. However, and as other reviews have noted, John's voice is VERY much front and center, which is both good and bad. The good? That's obvious: you get to hear one of the rock 'n' roll voices as if he's singing in your living room. The bad? Depending on the song, it can sound like John is in the room, but the band is somewhere down the hall (that is, the music can sound very distant and thin). That thin sound is somewhat compensated by a very heavy bass, but in turn that can make any given song here sound very "boomy". Still, the true "ultimate" aspect of this collection is, of course, the songs. If you're familiar with the Beatles but have never heard John's solo work, I envy the discoveries you're about to make -- this is timeless music, and more relevant than ever before.
