The Best Fruit is about how high emotional intelligence augments what the Christian Bible calls the fruit of the spirit. The goal of this book is to highlight how increasing one’s emotional intelligence actually augments the work of God in the individual. The author emphasizes character traits and mental habits that can lead to successful living, greater leadership ability, and relationship building as they relate to the fruit of the spirit. Christians believe that God, the Holy Spirit, is at work to cultivate behavior and characteristics that are pleasing to God and that add not only to the individual’s quality of life but to their community engagement. The text gives several examples, from the author’s life experience, from history, and from the Bible, of how emotions can highjack a person’s cognitive ability. Yet this book also extolls the virtues of high emotional intelligence and gives examples of its effect on a person’s ability to successfully navigate life’s challenges. The author concludes with suggestions and resources to start increasing emotional intelligence.

Title: For the long haul...
Review: Pastor Ragin's book is for those who wish to develop the skills to persevere in ministry and in life. This is no quick self-help book, offering pat formulas for "success." This is a book about faithfulness. It is a guide for those who dare to trust, as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin used to say, "the slow work of God." After conversion comes cultivation, which takes time and patience. Pastor Ragin masterfully weaves contemporary psychological insights on emotional intelligence with the timeless wisdom of St. Paul the Apostle regarding the fruits of the Spirit. The author does not shy away from the painful lessons and gut-wrenching circumstances that life sometimes lobs at people of faith--indeed some of her stories can be quite jarring--but instead invites the reader to follow a Spirit led path of self-awareness and growth that fosters perseverance while increasing our capacity to be persons for others.

While this book is educational, it is also a delightful read, in that, the author includes several personal examples of her lifeâs experiences, thus enhancing this bookâs practical application to the reader.
