Are the snowy owls in trouble? Venture into the Alaskan arctic and the summer realm of these predator birds to find out. Discover the diverse species necessary to owl survival, how climate change is affecting the landscape of their nesting site of past millennia, and what it takes to do field research in this action-packed addition to the award-winning Scientists in the Field series.
It's July on Alaska's North Slope, and scientist Denver Holt is in Utqiagvik surveying nests. Denver has been coming here since 1992, and the snowy owls he studies have been coming here much longer: thousands of years.
With its mix of coastal, low-elevation tundra and a rich presence of lemmings, the North Slope is the only area in Alaska where snowy owls regularly nest. How do snowy owls decide where they will nest? How do they manage to arrive at locations where food will be abundant? What drives the success of these delicate tundra ecosystems? These are the mysteries Denver is trying to solve to help ensure a bright future for these elegant hunters.

Title: A great read for everyone (not just scientists)!
Review: This book is appealing on many different levels: you can browse the many spectacular photographs, dip into the descriptions of wildlife field work, or share the reactions of kids (and adults) to the photos and descriptions of the delightfully cute chicks (which appear so utterly different from their parents).Thereâs information here about snowy owls that you won't find anywhere else. Unique close-ups (taken with a long lens from a blind) of family life on a snowy owl nest, and magnificent photos of snowy owls on the wing. Here are some of the photo captions:⢠A mother snowy owl broods her clan, with only one of her chicks visible as it safely snoozes under her protective gaze.⢠Five snowy owl chicks watch a distant parent, waiting for the arrival of food⢠The father snowy owl offers a lemming to the mother as the oldest chick looks on with great interest.⢠Liberty hits the tundra as a male snowy owl strikes her backpack while defending his chicks.⢠Sitting on their nest mound, six snowy owl chicks rest while Denver prepares to band them.⢠These twenty-one-day-old chicks quietly wait from a comfortable perch on Libertyâs boots. The detailed descriptions of field work in a summer-long Arctic program are a unique introduction for anyone considering a career in wildlife biology. Thereâs also a discussion of the impact of global warming, and information on what you can do to help snowy owls.A great gift for anyone interested in wildlife!

Title: Great Book about owls
Review: My granddaughter loved this book about owls. It's not a child's picture book but is for elementary school age children.
