This revised, four-color edition of The Farmer’s Wife Cookbook features country-kitchen recipes that appeared in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.

Beloved by home cooks since the magazine was first published, the recipes resonate now more than ever as many of us—from the countryside, city, and in between—return from quick meals on the go to slow, scratch cooking; fresh and wholesome ingredients (often homegrown, self-made, or from the farmer’s market); and the tradition of Sunday dinners and eating together with family and friends.

Best Recipes from the Farmer’s Wife Cookbook brings together the most popular, easy-to-follow recipes and variations along with dozens of menus that originated in farm kitchens nationwide and appeared on the pages of the magazine over its publication around the start of the twentieth century. This new edition is illustrated with color photographs and completely redesigned to appeal to a modern-day cook who wants to bring the warmth and family of the Farmer’s Wife to their own kitchen.Recipes include:

Macaroni and Cheese Pie—all kinds! Southern Fried Chicken Fried Green Tomatoes Spiced Oatmeal Cookies Michigan Cherry Pie Apple Plum Jam Pear Honey Corn Chowder Swedish Meatballs Stuffed Sweet Potatoes And hundreds more!

Wherever you live, this down-home cookbook is the perfect companion to a renewed appreciation for family life and comforting, back-to-basics cooking.

Baked Spinach with Cheese

This crowd pleasing recipe is perfect for the next time you’re entertaining friends for a casual gettogether. If you’re expecting a large group, double the recipe and heat up the second dish when the first one is nearly gone. Choose a cheese such as Colby, Havarti, or Monterey Jack that melts smoothly, and serve with grilled French bread, toast points, or pita chips—any delivery method sturdy enough to hold this rich dip without falling apart.

Stuffed Pork Loin

Pork loins make terrific weeknight meals. They’re inexpensive and don’t take long to cook when roasted at a high temperature. This recipe takes the lower-and-slower approach and only looks like a special occasion dish. The small addition of pickles with the stuffing makes for a surprising pop of flavor throughout—don’t skip them!

Fruit Cobbler

For those who are averse to making pie crusts, this is the treat for you! But really, who doesn’t love a simple summer dessert? Here, all you have to do is put your favorite fruits in the bottom of a pie plate and top it with an easy-to-mix batter. It’s a one-bowl recipe, no rolling pin required. Enjoy it fresh from the oven with a large scoop of ice cream.

Cream of Potato Soup/Potato Chowder

The warming goodness of potato chowder garnished with bacon is the perfect lunch after a hard day of playing in the snow, while the pureed version works as an elegant first course to a table of dinner guests. Freeze batches of the chowder to reheat in a snap for a hearty meal on a cold night or to thaw and puree as a time-saver for future dinners.

Pot Roast

Chuck roast is a slow cooker’s best friend. That long, slow simmer in flavorful broth help soften the meat until it practically melts in your mouth. Use whatever sturdy vegetables you like—and omit those you don’t. If you prefer a thicker, more stew-like broth, dredge the meat in flour before browning it or smash a couple pats of butter with an equal measure of flour and add it to the slow cooker at the end of cooking.

Blueberry Muffins

When blueberries are in season, who can resist them? These simple-to-make muffins will reward your taste buds! The delicate berries are dusted with flour to help suspend them in the batter (rather than sinking to the bottom) and folded in last to keep them plump and whole. When you’ve picked more berries than you know what to do with, make extra batches of these muffins and freeze them for that burst of summer bliss all year long.

Title: Sweetly Nostalgic
Review: Were you lucky enough to inherit your family's recipes? Or perhaps you didn't but are searching for your own foodie connection to the past. Either way, this collection of recipes from The Farmer's Wife Cookbook, first published between 1893 and 1939, will help you create good honest food that's passed the test of time. The combination of vintage recipes sprinkled with sweet little vintage clipart, set alongside beautiful contemporary food photography, conveys the message that recipes from the past can be relevant in today's kitchens.I enjoy creating meals the old-fashioned way and I didn't expect to learn too many new tricks from this cookbook, but I was pleasantly surprised. Tapioca in meatloaf? Who knew? Brown sugar in Fried Green Tomatoes? Tell me more. Snickerdoodles with *gasp* walnuts and raisins? Am I brave enough to try that? Perhaps. I think it's time for some old-fashioned new-to-me kitchen adventures! My thanks to authors Beverly Hudson, Kari Cornell and Melinda Keefe, Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Title: Easy to prepare and delicious!
Review: Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook shoew us just how much cooking has changed since our grandmother’s day or the early 1900s, pre World War II days. The only spices were salt and pepper, cheese was always cheddar and processed foods didn’t exist. Even some measurements were different, many ingredients were listed by pound. These recipes are all easy to prepare and sound delicious. Organized by traditional category, they include breakfasts, bread, biscuits, vegetables, cookies, cakes beverages and more. My favorites are all the soups, the biscuits, Smothered Chicken, Potato Dumplings and all the cookies. The recipes are highlighted by gorgeous photographs and hand illustrated drawings. This is a cookbook that any home cook will enjoy adding to his/her collection! 5 stars.Thank you to NetGalley and Beverly Hudson, Kari Cornell and Melinda Keefe for this ARC.

Title: Love this!
Review: This is a beautiful trip down memory lane!"Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook" was first published in 1893. This is a revised version with full color photographs of the best dishes from that cookbook. This book is a vintage recipe treasure with cooking just like my grandma used to make. Lost recipes for how to make a homemade chess pie, banana loaf, chicken fried steak, buttermilk fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, beef stew, fried green tomatoes, strawberry shortcake, potato soup, and (my personal favorite) chicken and dumplings. This cookbook has tons old family recipes that bring back the loving feeling of being in the kitchen with your mama cooking up a family meal. After all, cooking is not just about the food, it's about the love, family, friends, and good memories that go with it.I could spend all day just reading this awesome book before I even start cooking! I collect cookbooks and plan to add this to my library to pass down to my kids and grandkids when its published on January 25, 2022.Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group- Harvard Common Press, for allowing me to review this outstanding cookbook.

Title: Love these old family recipes.
Review: I'm lucky to have some handwritten recipes from my grandmother and aunts. This cookbook contains several of their recipes and it was exciting to see what else was available. These recipes were published originally in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.They are simple and timeless. No fancy ingredients, just wholesome well cooked food. I would recommend that to anyone buying a cookbook for a newlywed or someone starting out on their own. Easy to read and well organized.
