Title: Falls way short of potential
Review: There are two major shortcomings. One is the lack of an author, introduction, or any explanatory material about the concepts employed. The other is that section is in alphabetic order by the normal alphabetic ordering for each of the five letter positions.1. Attribution. Who wrote this? What were they trying to accomplish? How did they select the words to be included? There are no statistics about letter frequency. The only help given for analytical use is that each letter-position starts with new comumn. No search rationale is given.2. Mis-sorted. This is a little hard to explain, so I will start with an example. I had a word that hat IRT as the last three letters. So I went to the third-letter section, and found the pages for the letter I in the middle (third) position in the word. I expected that all the words ending in IRT would be together. But they were not. It was just a listing of all of the words having I in position 3, but listed in the same order as section 1 - normal alphabetic order. So I looked through all 428 words with I in the third position, spread over six pages. It began with ABIDE, ACIDS, AIEDU ... and ended with WRITE, WRITS, ZAIRE. I found FLIRT on page 119, and SHIRT and SKIRT on page 120. (In the process I thought of QUIRT, but it was not anywhere in the book.) I has expected to find FLIRT first, immediately followed by SHIR and SKIRT. In other words the sort order by word number should be 1,2,3,4,5 for the first section (as it is), but then 2,3,4,5,1 for the second section, 3,4,5,1,2 for the third section, 4,5,1,2,3 for the fourth, and 5,1,2,3,4 for the last. In the book as sole, they make up to 26 subsections then list the words inch subsection with the key letter capitalized , but in the same order as the first section. The book would much more useful for Wordle if they did so. Also now that the NY Times is promoting World, they avoid plural words (which usually end in S), but this list has numerous four-letter words that are five letters with an S added. (SKIRT, for example, is followed by SKITS) in Section 3. (This has the interesting effect of using 13 pages for the letter S in Section 5, so plurals are about 20 percent of the book).
