Buttercream icing is the most delicious cake decorating medium, is very accessible and needs very little specialist equipment.
This essential guide demonstrates more than 50 innovative techniques via easy to follow step-by-step photographic tutorials and includes over 40 stunning cake designs to create at home, from simple cupcakes to three-tiered wonders.
Valeri & Christina start by showing you how to perfect a basic buttercream recipe and then how to pipe simple textures and patterns, and an array of flowers. They then demonstrate how to create a myriad of creative effects using diverse techniques such as stamping, stencilling, palette knife painting and much more.
Chef Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes has reviewed the book: "The Contemporary Buttercream Bible is an absolute game changer in the industry of cake art. I've never seen techniques and talent presented in such a way as to be concurrently hugely aspirational yet completely approachable. I look forward to learning all the skills that I, as an artist in rolled fondant, have only the most rudimentary grasp of. Not since Cakewalk by Margaret Braun have I been this excited about a cake book. Bravo!"
Sonya Hong - Americancakedecorating.com has also reviewed the book and her main take-away was that buttercream designs are limited only by one's imagination. "The authors' examples are inspirational and a demonstration of what is possible if you 'put your whole heart into it.' Overall, Valeriano and Ong have created a book full of inspiration and encouragement that re-energizes the use of buttercream in modern cake design."

Title: Best buttercream frosting cookbook!
Review: I love buttercream frosting and looked at a lot of cake decorating books in the library to see which one I wanted to buy for home use. This is by far the most helpful. The recipes are easy to follow and include mixing techniques, how much to make for different cakes, and how to make different flavors and colors. The decorating instructions include lots of pictures, with specific instructions on how to use icing tips, spatulas, stencils, and other tools and techniques to make all kinds of patterns and flowers. A terrific reference cookbook, I will use it a lot.

Title: Buttercream is the best
Review: I do not like the taste of fondant at all. Fondant seems to be all that anyone uses anymore. I used to decorate cakes when my kids were small. Then do to lack of time and an elbow injury I stopped. Recently I have been taking a go at it again. I have forgotten so much and am so out of practice I was looking for something fun to help get back into it. These ladies are so very talented and are true cake decorators. No rice crispies, no molded chocolate, no fondant All buttercream and cake. Beautiful and delicious. I have only tried a few things and their directions are very easy to follow. There a many little tricks of the trade. I am very impressed, and that is not easy to do. I would recommend this bible for all levels of cake decorators.

Title: Happy to have found this book!
Review: Beautiful techniques! Small errors (only a few) in the book that will be caught by anyone who has any knowledge of cake decorating but so many of the flowers and other ideas (Palette Painting, Frozen Buttercream Transfers, etc.) are beautiful and explained very well. and I hope to put their instruction to use very soon. The cakes are stunning! The book led me to their website and consequently to some classes being taught in Phoenix this August. I was fortunate enough to get a seat and am VERY excited to learn as much as I can during our 8 hour class!!! Very impressed that these two ladies have only been decorating for 4 years and yet have accomplished so much!!

Title: Gorgeous book with very informative tips!
Review: I have taken their Crafty class and i was mainly trying to have pics of their cakes, however i was pleaseantly surprised by the specific tips you learn! They give you tips about how to properly do your basic buttercream, i loved the chapter about frozen buttercream transfers i have used this technique before and was very happy to see it here, that cake is gorgeous, I have taken classes to do flowers with Miso Bakes these flowers are less defined than Miso's but I still would take notes on their techniques, they also talk about rice paper, so in general they cover multiple topics, I think this is a very good book for an advanced baker and even a very ambitious new baker. This book is gorgeous and very informative

Title: Informative
Review: This is a great book, for beginner or any level. It has a great deal of pictures, as someone who needs video or pics to understand completely. I'm an intermediate and learned quite a bit. Can't wait to give some of these a try. It does have recipes and tips as well. Any decorator should have this on hand to at least give some inspiration.

Title: Thorough, Beautiful, and Accessible!
Review: I teach Baking and Pastry at a Vocational Technical high school, and I would absolutely love to have this as a deco textbook. I bought this because I wanted some professional development and not only have I been able to use it to great success, but my students LOVE it. Visually stunning, technically detailed and easy to follow through basic to advanced technique. This is the instructional text on buttercream you've been looking for, whether you're a home baker or professional looking to up your game!

Title: Not for the beginner, Not for those with more experience
Review: After reading this book and studying her pictures I am disappointed in general. The basic buttercream and frosting techniques are good and easy to follow but the actual decorating is okay if you have had some experience. They show several basic tips and then tries to show a step by step in using it for the flower. I don't think there are enough photos for step by step.I don't know how she is going from a practice board to the cake. I see in one photo some scissors used to lift a flower on to the cake. She shows the decorating of the cake while on the final plate but not the turn table she has in the list of tools.I don't see instructions for moving the cake. There are instructions for blending colors, making dark colors, using the pallet knife as a decorating tool.transfers and painting on the cakes. I think I need something more basic and this might be too basic for those with more experience.I don't feel that I know much more about decorating that my old Wilton yearbook. As for the cakes, I don't find any of them inspirational except the cover. The colors used for most of the cakes are harsh.
