In The Chile Project, Sebastian Edwards tells the story of how the neoliberal economic model came to an end in 2021, when Gabriel Boric was elected president, vowing that "If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it will also be its grave." More than a story about one Latin American country, The Chile Project is a behind-the-scenes history of the spread and consequences of the free-market thinking that dominated economic policymaking around the world in the second half of the twentieth century—but is now on the retreat.

In 1955, the United States State Department launched the "Chile Project" to train Chilean economists at the University of Chicago. After General Augusto Pinochet overthrew socialist president Salvador Allende in 1973, Chile's "Chicago Boys" implemented the purest neoliberal model for the next seventeen years, undertaking a package of privatization and deregulation, creating a modern capitalist economy, and sparking talk of a "Chilean miracle." But under the veneer of success, a profound dissatisfaction with the inequalities caused by neoliberalism was growing. In 2019, protests erupted throughout the country, and in 2022 Boric began his presidency with a clear mandate: to end neoliberalismo.

The Chile Project provides an important new perspective on the history of neoliberalism and its global decline today.

Title: very interesting book
Review: o be honest, I was expecting some kind of left-wing drama but instead found a very interesting, well-written, and balanced work. What makes this book great is not only that Sebastian Edwards is a great economist but also that the author has personal ties to Chile and knows the subject from firsthand experience. Highly recommended.

Title: Fascinating Read, Gripping Story, Highly Recommended
Review: This book dives deeply into the various geopolitical and economic cross-currents that made Chile what it is today. What I liked in particular is that it tells a compelling story and has the author's own personal experiences, on the ground in Chile, to augment his analysis of the history of the Chilean political-economy. The book reaches beyond its borders in the sense that the lessons and analogies gleaned from the history of Pinochet and the economics of the American "Chicago Boys" can be applied globally. For example, in Deng Xiao Ping's reforms in communist China. The parallels are striking and the story is gripping. I have never once given a review on Amazon but felt compelled to do so for this work. Highly recommended.

Title: Valuable but dated
Review: Very thorough analysis of the neoliberal experiment in Chile. I believe it misses the mark on a few points, but not all, on the causes of the 2019 revolt and the supposed end of neoliberalism in Chile.The fact is that just one year after the book was written the political scenario in Chile has taken another drastic turn. Now a conservative and populist right dominated the writing of a new constitutional project, which may be rejected (again).Neoliberalism is alive and well in Chile, quite unfortunately.

Title: The Story of the Chicago Boys
Review: The five-star reviews here tell the story: "fascinating, gripping, great book, first time I’ve written a review, clear prose style.” With the aid of illustrations, tables, and a very useful timeline and Dramatis Personae, Prof. Edwards untangles the paradoxical relationship between a market economy and a police state. He starts us off in 1955 training Chilean graduate students in economics at the University of Chicago and ends up in Gabriel Boric’s current “Looking at the Future through a Rear View Mirror." A truly splendid piece of scholarship.

Title: Imperdible libro sobre la revolución del libre mercado en Chile y sucesos políticos contemporáneos
Review: Sebastián Edwards, gran economista chileno y distinguido profesor de UCLA (una de las mejores universidades del mundo), hace un trabajo formidable al narrar la influencia de los Chicago Boys en materias económicas y políticas a partir del año 1973. Adicionalmente, ahonda en cómo gobiernos de centroizquierda e izquierda (y no solo de derecha) fueron capaces de ahondar en materias políticas y sociales aplicando los mismos conceptos de libre mercado puestos en marcha por sus predecesores. Más importante aún, Sebastián hace un trabajo fantástico al analizar la “paradoja de Chile” y sus posibles explicaciones, y el concepto de neoliberalismo y su evolución en el tiempo.En resumen, un gran libro de historia y economía contemporánea de Chile basada en años de investigación y experiencias del autor. Un libro que debiesen leer todos los chilenos y un imperdible para extranjeros.

Title: nondogmatic review of Chile’s development by Chile’s most famous economist
Review: This book is readable by a New York Times reader. Engaging writing style. Amazon kindle edition however lacks full figures and easily readable tables. Some are there but some are not.The author is quite convincing that both economic growth and inequality matter (not just the former). He also mentions mobility—-but perhaps not enough. It should be more like a trifecta than growth and inequality.Chile has to be very careful now not to destroy what it has in its quest to obtain more of what it has not. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Review: Dans cet ouvrage magnifique, Sebastian Edwards fait le point sur les politiques économiques mises en œuvre au Chili depuis les années 1970. Ce type d'analyse historique est un exercice extrêmement utile pour préciser la portée et les limites des doctrines économiques appliquées en politique économique. L'inspiration globale de celle qui a été appliquée au Chili est bien résumée par l'expression: "Chicago Boys" qui a été appliquée aux praticiens chiliens pendant ces décennies. Par rapport aux objectifs assignés, c'est un immense succès, qui a amené le Chili du statut de mauvais élève parmi les pays les plus pauvres d'Amérique Latine à celui de star du système, une référence incontournable pour les autres pays latino-américains. Mais, le soulèvement populaire de 2019, assez semblable à celui des gilets jaunes en France, a montré que "l'homme ne se nourrit pas que de pain". Il y a une dimension sociale, ou "sociétale", qui doit être prise en compte pour éviter de laisser trop de gens sur le bord de la route, et qui a été négligée au Chili (comme en France). Une dimension de "savoir vivre ensemble" que la notion d'égalité horizontale ne saisit qu'imparfaitement doit s'imposer pour éviter l'exclusion ou la marginalisation de certains groupes sociaux, relégués au statut de caste inférieure. Il faut lire dans la foulée le livre "Caste..." de Isabel Wilkerson pour mieux comprendre ce problème.

Review: I learned a great deal I did not know - about the history of Chile and the economic theories put to the test over the last 50 years.The basic thesis is compelling: neoliberalism led to great and genuine economic success but also to great problems - high inequality and poor pension provision.The question ‘could it have been otherwise’ is not however asked as much as it might be. Why think the pensions system will work when contributions are about half the level needed to achieve the promised levels of pension for example.Still, overall it’s fascinating
