Title: Good mix of written and visual material
Review: This is a sizable book in hardback that does an excellent job of melding it's written histories with a strong collection of photos from the era in question. The author has included much information about the various Universal horror series that is not generally known along with the more basic material each reader should be exposed to. There are also a number of nice biographical sketches of the people who worked to make the films. All-in-all a good read!

Title: A Great Book About A Great Legacy
Review: Thanks to Universal's 100 years, year long celebration and the release of their Universal Monsters: Essential Collection on blu ray, I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to read up on the studios begining. I went to the library and picked up a good book and once I finished it I purchased this book from Amazon. Right away you will notice that it is a book with some heft to to it which shows that it wasn't cheaply put together. The book ties a lot of knots and provides information that I did not previously know. I found the content very insightful and was glad for all the pictures. It's not entirely about the main monsters and therefore has some information concerning some of the other horror movies that their big stars appeared in and also covers the directors, make-up people and others.Having grown up with these characters they are forever ingrained within. I also have very fond memories of being so scared after watching one of these movies that I was afraid of going into a dark kitchen to get a glass of water. Even so, I always came back for more. The Universal Monster movies were the core of the genre of movie I liked best as a kid. Thanks to continued interest in the movies and books like this, they have not been lost in time but instead continue to live on. I recommend this first rate book to anyone who is interested in what put Universal on the map.

Title: Solid layout and graphics
Review: I got this book for my brother-in-law as a Christmas gift. It had a solid layout and graphics. The book cover has a nice texture, and the book itself has good heft. It is a great addition to the collection of classic horror movie fans.

Title: THE BEST OF THEM ALL!
Review: After purchasing several hardcover books on monster movies, this book is the best collection of the great Universal Monster's of the past. Well written and amazingly illustrated, everything you wish to know is here! A great reference piece and filled with almost all the information any Universal monster fan would want, wrapped in coffee table form. There are several excellent monster's of the movies history books out there that are great reads, but in my estimation this one tops them all. Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Phantom of the Opera and The Creature From the Black Lagoon......they are all here under two covers. Superb job by Mr. Mallory!

Title: The studio that perfected nightmares for the masses.
Review: The Universal studios made hundreds of movies in their time. But they are known primarily for their horror movies. Dracula. Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and the Invisible Man became stars as bright as Bogart or May West. This book details their origins and careers in delicious detail. With chapters spotlighting stars, directors, and technicians, this tome may well tell " Everything You Wanted to Know About Monsters ". This is one of those books you will reread just for the fun of it.

Title: Beautiful photos
Review: I wish I could give this five stars. But in actuality the copy is nothing more than synopses of movies and well-known stories about the stars. No real insight here. The real problem is that it's rife with mistakes. Just two of the many: Mina Seward in Dracula is listed as Mina Harker, when in fact Harker is her fiance's name. Karloff in House of Frankenstein is called both Dr. Neimann (correctly) and Dr. Eidelmann (Onslow Stevens' character is House of Dracula). Perhaps this is only a problem for purists but I felt it's worth noting. The photos are glorious.

Review: From a very early age I have always been fascinated by these movies . At far too early an age I was allowed to watch these classic films. This became a Friday special. Two classics back to back. I have a few books that deal individually with these Monsters but this one covers them all in one volume. Some great insights into the characters and the people involved in making these films. Mine took a while to arrive as it came from America but was well worth the wait. Buy it. Enjoy.

Review: This is a beautiful, large coffee tale sized book with glossy pages and lots of beautiful stills. There are chapters on different monster "families" that - even after reading about and watching monster movies since the 70's - I found interesting. If you're a monster kid, or just want to look into the golden age of Universal monsters - Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, Dracula, etc - I'd call this a must-have book to add to the collection.

Review: By the time I was old enough to appreciate a good horror movie (I must have been, what, eight?) the cinemas were no longer showing these films and video recorders were yet to become popular. Fortunately, the BBC would occasionally oblige with a late-night showing, long after sensible people were in bed.What memories this brings back! Dracula! Frankenstein! The Wolf Man! Everything from The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the early twenties to The Creature from the Black Lagoon in the mid-fifties. In fact, the Creature from the Black-and-White Lagoon. Part of the charm of all these films was that they were not in colour (maybe one of the reasons that Mel Brooks's musical version of Young Frankenstein on stage didn't win over all fans of the film is that you have to have colour on stage?). Hammer came along later and did it all over again in colour - with that unfeasibly crimson-coloured blood - but Universal had got there first.This book is a treasure-trove of photographs and information. Happy, happy memories!
